I read that after the plague and Spanish Flu. Cities saw a decrease for a short period then huge growth. I see a gradual increase in attendance with lower level the slowest to grow. Then hopefully people will be ready to enjoy live events .

(04-30-2021 07:45 AM)Bronco14 Wrote:  eather & match-up affects attendance in the MAC. You can usually expect near-capacity the first couple games of the season when it's 70 or so out, for the teams w/ the 'better' fanbases. Fans are excited the long off-season is over, students excited to be back on campus, maybe attending their first game, tailgating at its height, etc. As the season goes on & it gets cooler, attendance drops, usually considerably. Homecoming is fairly-well attended. Hosting rivals on a Saturday - especially if it's a warm weather game - the stadium will be rocking. If you're watching a MAC weeknight game in November, that's not the same look as a Saturday game in September or even October - FACT.

Cool-to-cold, non-exciting opponents, and/or weeknight games hurt attendance considerably.

Also, to a lesser extent, record. You don't want to be out of the MAC title race in October. Getting a P5 win out-of-conference can help w/ attendance. Going 3-1 or even sweeping OOC can also help w/ attendance, but it depends who you beat. Going 0-4, 1-3, etc. is a death sentence for your attendance the rest of the season.

Similar situation for Miami, though our fan base has been depressed by years of losing. We just had our first back-to-back winning seasons in football since 04-05 (and only our fourth winning season period) and first winning season I'm hoops since 09. During good times we drew over 25k butts in the seats for Big Ben and nearly 5k for basketball during Wally, mostly by catering to those in the far out Cincy/Dayton burbs plus the small/medium sized towns in between that are a shorter drive versus other college or pro teams. But its a casual fan base, one that only shows up with winning. Without it you're left with a town of less than 10k permanent residents and a small DI public college enrollment of 15k.

Opponent matters too, when we play FCS you get a lot less excitement than a rival obviously. It's much better overall when we play rivals on a Saturday versus a weeknight. This past season blew since we had seven home games for the first time ever and had a number of very interesting opponents lined up like Cincinnati, Ohio U, and Army. F'n COVID.

RE: All About Attendance
Jack Swarbrick again says he expects lots of fans in Notre Dame Stadium this fall:

"Notre Dame Vice President and Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick remains hopeful that home football weekends in the fall of 2021 will once again resemble the norm for Fighting Irish football fans.

Interviewed at halftime of Saturday’s Blue-Gold Game by radio play-by-play man Paul Burmeister, Swarbrick offered encouraging words that Notre Dame’s home football games this fall against Toledo, Purdue, Cincinnati, USC, North Carolina, Navy and Georgia Tech will be attended by at least a sizeable portion of the 77,622 capacity.

“We’re very optimistic,” Swarbrick said. “All the trends on campus and in our community are so positive as the vaccination rate (goes) up and positive tests go down.

“We’ve got another month here before we make a final decision. But I’m really optimistic that we’re going to have a lot of folks in the stadium.”

TCU is going 100% for the year. Last year you did not lose your seats if you did not purchase any. This year you will. It remains to be seen how many people will stay away due to their concerns about the virus.

There are probably a few, but I have no idea how many. UC football is certainly the best deal in town.

We’ve captured a lot of Bengal refugees over the years, but there remains a die-hard corps of Bengal fans that will support the organization regardless of results. What’s more, while most UC fans are Bengals fans; most Bengal fans are not UC fans. Many only superficially watch CFB or root for some other school (Bengals have a large presence in Kentucky- so many of them root for UK).

I do not think that most UC fans are Bengals fans.

Don't get me wrong: the Bengals are the most popular NFL team among UC fans. But it's just not a majority. At Bearcats games, it's a lot more common to see a Reds hat/jersey than a Bengals hat/jersey. A surprising number of UC fans wear UC & Reds stuff almost interchangeably.

Either way, I don't think that the two compete much for ticket sales. The games don't overlap, and the atmosphere is completely different. They probably compete for TV fanbases more than for in-person fanbases.

Most of the folks in our hometown are conditioned to follow nearby UVa & VT. But the exit of Jerry Jr. and the recent success we have enjoyed with our Top 25 finish this past season may finally be our tipping point in getting casual fans to join us in the stadium.

I believe Liberty has a situation where you have more than a regional school like my JMU who primarily attracts from VA, MD, PA, NJ, and NY. You have much more of a nationwide base. This is good, but can be a little difficult to get "other than students" to attend the games.

Be specific and talk about your school or others you know. TV doesn't lie. If you claim you are sold out but it looks 50% full. Why? All inside in clubs, high no show rate, TV shows visiting side, school inflating attendance?

I'm not sure if this is referring to football attendance or any type of attendance, but I will assume that it is the latter.

University of Montevallo- historically, our two strongest sports are baseball and men's soccer. Attendance is made up of students, some alumni, parents of athletes, and probably a few townies. We have a YouTube channel dedicated to televising our sports, and that is it. No additional tv or radio coverage.

As for reasons why our attendance is lackluster, probably the biggest reason is no one is very familiar with our opponents, and the school in the past didn't do a very good job promoting Montevallo Falcons games. The only way I found out about the games was from word of mouth from friends on the team or just happened to see a game being played. In addition, a lot of students and others were interested in the Alabama or Auburn games since they are pretty much the "pro" teams for this state. To the best of my knowledge, no one ever tailgated at a Montevallo Falcons game.

I will cover the other teams that I follow in another post or I will edit this one later.

RE: All About Attendance
Charleston is a VERY interesting market considering the dynamics. Fast growing, with people moving from all over the country, but no local “big-time” team.

So many people follow South Carolina or Clemson, and those are the dominant teams in the market, with Carolina having a new coach and Clemson being Clemson, attendance will probably be close to if not higher than 2019.

But everyone else is very interesting. College of Charleston baseball attendance has actually gone up from this season compared to 2020 and 2019 with beer sales and only like 600 seats being filled. But that team is a niche compared to the rest of the market.

Three minor league teams, Citadel football (which usually gets between 8-12K a game), College of Charleston basketball, the Charleston Classic (major college basketball teams coming every year in November), and all the high school sports means there is a lot to do here.

College of Charleston attendance will probably be higher than 2019-20. A new coach, well-known locally, plus hosting North Carolina this season alone will sell a few hundred season tickets. Their attendance is hugely dependent on how good the team is, when the game is played and who they play.

An average or below team against CAA conference opponents (only one relatively close rival in UNCW), and you struggle to get more than a couple thousand a game. Get an exciting team with a chance at a NCAA bid, and it is the hottest ticket in town.

Also, the location of JMU (closer to DC, adjacent to an interstate to the point where you see inside the stadium as you drive south on I-81) helps in comparison of getting to Lynchburg. I'm more curious of what the ESPN3 numbers are for Liberty games since much of their student base is online only.

Most new residents will not immediately follow local teams. Look at Tampa Bay Rays as an example.

Yup. So many transplants in the Charleston area now. No matter where you go. People aren’t gonna come to see The Citadel play Western Carolina or Mercer in football or basketball. And all the old Citadel fans want College of Charleston in the same conference back. But Charleston is a way different place in 2021 than it was in 2011. Like 150,000 more population in the metro area.

Worth noting that baseball in the twenties benefitted from a better economy, not having the Federal League to compete with, not having WWI going on, the end of the dead ball era to a more exciting game, and a reduction in the general social unrest of the teens. It's rarely one factor that drives attendance down or up.

As a Vanderbilt fan, I must ask: What is this "attendance" term all about?

On a serious note, I do wonder how VU football home game attendance will be this fall. On the one hand, there are COVID considerations that could render the Commodore fan base even smaller than normal. But on the other, we have a new coach and there could be a certain "excitement" among out modest fan base.
