Coaches thought Gainwell should have played one more year college. Guess they were right

My exact thoughts. He’s a great talent, but you gotta think he could have at least been a 2nd rounder had he stayed. Maybe it doesn’t matter in the long run, but it looks like at best he’ll go in the 4th.

In his defense, running backs don’t have to be drafted high to succeed in the NFL so hopefully he ends up in that category.

Maybe, but sure matters re contract and signing bonus.

Other than Gainwell odds are vey low for anyone in the draft. Williams is listed as the 6-7 rated punter and the draft does not go that deep for punters. He will likely get a camp invitation.

When I said punt kicker I was referring to riley patterson just using wilbur's old posting for it. I think riley gets picked up in 6th round and agree about williams

I wonder what ever happened to Wilbur? I miss his keen insight into football strategy.

Hopefully Gainwell falling down to the 5th round will teach players to play. Sitting on the couch doesn’t get you drafted.

There was a pandemic and he lost a lot of close family members due to complications with covid-19.

I don't fault him one bit for making his decision.

I think it was 4 close family members had died when he opted out. smh rip My heart goes out to families who experienced such trauma.

Healthy people under the age of 25 are more likely to die of the flu than covid. Zero heathy athletes have died from covid. Older people, especially older people with underlying health issues or weight issues, did have problems and I feel terrible for all of those that lost loved ones, including Kenny. It just also cost him a few million.

I am not saying it’s a certainty or that Kenny did this, but some players likely used covid as a convenient excuse to not play. I’m sure NFL teams want players that want to play.

Didn’t cost him millions. That would have meant he was a 1st round pick and he was never going to be 1st round pick.

By position value expressed as average salary RB is 8th of 11 positions. That means a bunch come out every year and they have a short lifespan.
He has skill and can make some good money starting off but he will have to earn it on the field on Sundays.

Interesting that he will be taken a round(s) behind the skilled Memphis players that didn’t opt out of their junior year. And 3rd round pick make more than 5th round picks. That’s definitely at least a million dollar difference on the first contract, right?

The Saints just took QB Ian Book from Notre Dame. I think Brady was as good as Book, especially with his arm. Plus Book's decision making was sometimes really poor. Book is much more mobile though. Hope Brady gets a shot with some team.

Salary evaluation quote,

“ Although the pay structure varies quite a bit in the first round, it’s not nearly as drastic when evaluating rounds two through seven of the draft currently. Players picked in these rounds receive contracts that are much closer in overall value. First, here’s a general breakdown of the second round, courtesy of Spotrac.”

I’m not saying he could not have improved some but the life span for an RB often doesn’t translate to a second contract.

That’s assuming you know he would have improved his rating by coming back. With our line that was not guaranteed.

I hope he has long career and makes a ton of money but most of the critique is a WAG. Fruitless.
