Is or was site of Union Institute & University.
Prior to UIU it was the offices and plant of Beau Brummel Tie Co.

I don't have access to the article. Can anyone summarize why UC is buying this? Its not contiguous to the Main campus or the Med campus.

I may still have a couple of old Beau Brummel ties somewhere in the recesses of my closet.

The University of Cincinnati is expanding the physical footprint of its burgeoning innovation district with the recently approved purchase of a building in Walnut Hills currently home to a familiar tenant.

What's this innovation district thing??

Check out this link. A lot of companies are moving to the uptown in the innovation district, where UC hopes collaboration will fuel additional research grant opportunities, improve the uptown area, provide job opportunities for co-op students and grads.

Great video thumbnail of what's happening Uptown; thanks for sharing.

Only a few of us are old enough to remember Beau Brummel ties, but that is a very cool building and it's exciting to see that it will be saved, renovated, and re-purposed in this way.

UC's campus renaissance has (in part at least) sparked incredible renewal on the hilltop. It's a long journey still to make a run at places like the Research Triangle in NC but this one is actually happening and seems to be gaining momentum and it all bodes well for UC.

We don't need to be the Research Triangle. That's enough for three universities.

The Triangle is also by far the largest economic driver of a region of 2 million people. Cincinnati doesn't need that. We have P&G, GE Aircraft, a large logistics industry, and a large financial industry.

Does anyone have an idea of a realistic goal?

University Circle in Cleveland is one potential. It's anchored by Case Western, University Hospital, and the Cleveland Clinic, which is similar (although maybe twice the size) to the medical strengths of Uptown. However, University Circle isn't a great goal because it has little research/innovation other than those three anchors. It also is a more attractive tourist destination because it boasts world class museums and dining that Uptown lacks.

That website doesn't say much. It just shows the anchors (who have been there for decades) and some new physical buildings.

Who are the tenants in these new buildings?

How are they collaborating with the Universities, EPA, and the hospitals?

Also, why aren't the other two colleges in the area a part of this? Hebrew Union and the Christ College of Nursing have a combined 1300 students. What about the Zoo? The Zoo has a $1.8 million research budget.

I'm just asking because these research "hubs" have been all the rage at universities for more than a decade. But many have little to show for it, and the collaboration benefits are elusive. The main benefit for tenants is renting cheap modern office space in a desirable location, and the main benefit for universities is an attractive return on a real estate investment that they were able to make by using their political power to get approvals for infrastructure improvements.

The Zoo is one of the anchors, along with UC, UC Health and Tri-Health.

Yes, it was. My mother worked at Gruen’s during the war before she met my father.
