Bearcat Football Keeps Getting National Love
Just yesterday I saw two big pieces touting UC as College Football Playoff Contenders. Bill Connelly published part two of his always stellar season previews (now he does them by conference, not quite as in depth as pre ESPN when he did the awesome team by team previews for every conference).

https://www.espn.com/college-football/in...ew-part-ii

Quote:The ceiling's even higher than we thought. The Bearcats had improved from 95th to 50th to 34th in SP+ in 2018-19, but there was reason to wonder if they could pull off more growth in 2020. Quarterback Desmond Ridder was intriguing but inconsistent, and he would be working with a green receiving corps.

They pulled off more growth, to say the least, leaping from 32nd to fifth in defensive SP+ and from 65th to 22nd in offensive SP+. The offense struggled with negative plays and situational conservatism. But Ridder was a magician with his arm and legs when behind schedule (UC ranked seventh in passing downs success rate), and Cincy romped through most of its schedule.

Quote:The offense is still a bit of an issue. The defense has minimal room for improvement. The Bearcats ranked fourth in success rate allowed and, despite some deep shots from Georgia, sixth in explosive play rate.

Next Pete Themel had this great piece focused on Des, but touting UC football for the upcoming season. https://sports.yahoo.com/last-dance-cinc...26259.html

Quote:Around Cincinnati, Ridder’s return will be celebrated with more than diaper parties. Cincinnati projects as a preseason top-10 program, looms again as a College Football Playoff antagonist and affords Ridder the opportunity to become one of the winningest quarterbacks in the history of college football.

Quote:The Bearcat offense should be loaded this year with Alabama transfer tailback Jerome Ford — “he’s going to be special,” Guidugli says — and two NFL-caliber tight ends in Leonard Taylor and Josh Whyle (six TDs), who reminds Denbrock of former Notre Dame star Tyler Eifert.

An offense that promises to be more aggressive in early down situations is complemented by a defense that simultaneously frustrates and helps develop Ridder daily. The stars of first-year coordinator Mike Tressel’s defense would pop at any level, as there are few better corner pairings in the country than fifth-year Coby Bryant (four INTs) and true junior Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner. At 6-foot-2 and 188 pounds, Gardner could thrust himself into first-round NFL discussions with a big season and some added weight.

Senior end Myjai Sanders (seven sacks) has such a high motor that Fickell claims he’ll lose 9 pounds during a single practice. He’s so disruptive he’s required to sit out parts of practice against the first-team offense so it can run plays. “Sometimes our throws, our reads are off as quarterbacks,” Ridder said of the constant defensive pressure. “It doesn't let us just sit back there and be a robot.”

Jordan Palmer on Ridder / Gino:
Quote:Palmer came away impressed with Ridder’s talent, athleticism and the coaching he’d received from Guidugli, the only quarterbacks coach Ridder has had at UC who Palmer said he has a “ton of admiration for” as a teacher. It’s also not lost on Palmer that Ridder’s “all-ball” focus doesn’t stray outside football and family, as he’s already flashed the habits and mannerisms of a pro.

Here’s to hoping we are allowed to pack Nippert to the gills this fall and give this team and this coach the love they deserve!

RE: Bearcat Football Keeps Getting National Love
This is what happens when you consistently win at a high level and have a coach who has turned down other jobs to stay. Year 5. Say it again. Year 5. You have to go back to Rick Minter to find someone who coached here for 5 years or more. In this specific case it probably helps that we are not P5 in terms of the expectations to win bigly. Not getting are asses handed to us against Georgia helped to. We SHOULD have won that game but it didn't quite fall that way after a last second 50+ yard FG. If we can either get to and win the NY6 or sneak in to the CFP we will be the new Boise St./UCF IMO. That is what still alludes our program going back to Brian Kelly - winning the biggest game on the biggest stage. If there was ever a season where the planets are aligned it is this coming one. Think about this...we actually have a BETTER team than last year. I'm certainly not suggesting that it is by leaps and bounds but when you factor in the returnees including a seasoned, focused Ridder, and the talent/depth already in place - wow! Throw in our schedule. It's going to be tough to take two road wins from Indy and the Domers but I believe there is a two week gap between the Indy game and the Golden Boyz. IMO, we have to take the Hoosiers game to remain highly ranked for the NY6 and the game in South Bend would be more of a "just keep it competitive and try to sneak out with a win" type thing. Of course winning would be the gravy on the mash taters. All we can do is ask for this opportunity and it's right there in front of us for the taking.

With this schedule, 1 loss likely means we're playing in a NY6 Bowl again and 0 losses gives us a real shot at the playoffs. Given the makeup of this roster, and the in conference schedule, that's the goal.

Normally I'd say yes. But them having Freeman gives them more of an edge because he knows the personnel, tendencies, etc. IMO that will be one game where Dez might have to win it with his arm, and I believe Freeman knows that as well. He'll do everything he can to take away our run game and running lanes for Dez. I'm sure he knows quite well what throws Dez struggles to make.

When I was in Vegas last month, I put $20 on them to win the national title. They were 150-1 odds.

Much has to do with their qb situation. This could be a game where the D line comes up big.

Oh, definitely.

Notre Dame's offense last season was not that great. They only scored 12 points against Louisville. And 10 points against Clemson in the ACC championship game.

Notre Dame is projected to lose 9-10 players to the NFL draft, including their quarterback.

According to this article, Notre Dame is only returning 14 guys who started any games last year. Two of them are kicker & punter. Two of them will platoon at weakside LB. Four of them were backups who only spot-started last year due to injury.

RE: Bearcat Football Keeps Getting National Love
The QB question mark is overblown. BK knows what he's doing with QB's. They have an experienced transfer Jack Coan coming in from Wisconsin.

Quote:As a junior, Coan was really impressive and led the Badgers to the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin finished the season with a 10-4 record behind Coan, who completed 69% of his passes for 2,727 yards and 18 touchdowns to only 5 interceptions. Coan was then named a preseason Maxwell Award and Manning Award Watch List nominee ahead of this season before his foot injury forced him to miss the year.

Coan has thrown for 3,278 yards in 18 college games. He’s completed 68.0 percent of his passes.

This is what I am banking on. I don’t think they will be as strong as they were last year, while we are “potentially” stronger.

Anyone is "beatable" on a given day. What gives me pause is this will not be an empty stadium in South Bend. We are also playing a former head coach and a former defensive coordinator who are not going to want to lose to us. I agree on paper that we match up better against them this year than last but let's not kid ourselves - this is the toughest game on the schedule.

I'm still worried about OLine. Offense went to **** against GA when Hudson went out.

No doubt. Offensive line is the biggest question by far. How that question is answered is the difference between this team being elite in the conference and elite in the country.

Yeah but wasn’t our center out of the game, too? We had more than one issue on the line when Hudson got ejected. Hoping they will have that shored up by this Fall.

Plus Georgia had some absolute beasts on their D line.

I hate to keep harping on it but there was one specific player on the OLine who struggled mightily against Georgia after Hudson went out. Remember though, all world frosh center Renfro did not make the game due to injury or COVID. That put us down two starters with little time to adjust. We'll have a whole offseason to coach and evaluate these kids. We'll be fine IMO. Or, to put it this way, I don't envision a drop off to the point of it becoming a real concern on offense. Our defense may just end up picking up more of that slack. We have a chance to be all-world on dee. Dominant. Dominating. Domineering.

The Defense was already 5th in the country according to SP+ and great in nearly every respect. I suspect they'll be a top ten defense again, but it's hard to ask for much more from that group.

Again I don't think offensive line will be an issue in conference, but to be an elite team nationally that is where our question marks are, particularly at tackle. The offense made huge improvements last year. The biggest issue is we still had a lot of unsuccessful plays (we weren't great at sustaining drives and put ourselves behind a lot). Now we were great on obvious passing downs, as we found ways to get out of trouble. This year for the offense to jump up a level again it needs a better success rate on standard downs.

If Penix comes back from his ACL injury without missing a beat, I actually think IU is going to be tougher than the Irish (not saying they will be a cakewalk either). I watched them a couple times last year and their coach has them playing, as CLF often says, beyond their god-given ability. Plus I do not trust B10 officiating.

A game that bothers me is the final game against ECU. We never play well down there, it will be Senior night and they are ticked off at us after last year’s game. They were extremely young last year, so most of their guys are back.

I saw they had 90% of their production back. They were an improving team last year.

Actually, I think the difference between elite and otherwise is the play of our QB. That said, at the risk of splitting hairs the defense still had some moments that was not dominant. We also played many teams with suspect offenses. IMO, the defense this year can be better - not by leaps and bounds - but I meant that any drop off on offense could be offset by a deeper talented defense. Especially across the DLine - getting after the QB should be much improved this year.
