I am surprised he used his second last scholarship on another UNCG player. Koval is a one year band-aid, Hensley has decent upside, but the McGinnis add is head scratching. This is a team of sub-.500 talent for the next few years. Let's hope Wes is a heck of a motivator, developer and X's/O's guy.

We needed a one-year band-aid at Center and got it. Plus, I'd argue that McGinnis has some solid upside, as he averaged 6.0 PPG as a freshman on a NCAA tourney team. We have two scholarships remaining - if we land at least one impact player to pair with DDJ, Davenport and a promising supporting cast, I think we'll be in the top half of the conference next year.

I'm not a fan of adding McGinnis. He's 6'3" and shoots 57% from the free-throw line. He had more turnovers than assists. His advanced defensive metrics are average (and that's against SoCon competition).

Last year, his offer list was Southern Illinois, Boise State, Jacksonville State, Stephen F. Austin, UAB, Samford, and UNC-G.

He's in the same class as Mason Madsen and Mike Saunders, so he'll be taking minutes from two better players who already had one foot out the door earlier.

I fail to see the upside.

I hope I'm proven wrong.

Not to pick nits, but aren't opponents factored into most advanced statistics?

Everything else, I don't disagree with. Seems like a roster balancing move and hoping he'll put it together, but I like that he is an athletic wing with at least a modicum of outside shooting prowess. Also, the kid only shot 14 FTs all year, so that 57% is skewed rather mightily by shooting 1-4 in his first ever college game.

All of that aside, I have to trust the process and hope that it translates to wins.

Overall your post is fair, but it's a bit of a spin to defend a 57% FT shooter by noting he hardly ever get to the line anyway. I mean both are basically bad.

Agreed...though I'm not spinning anything, just giving a little bit of fair perspective 57/100 is a little different than 8-14, even though they're both 57% on the stat sheet, if anything, leaning on that percentage in that situation is probably more easily utilized as a way to drag a player unfairly for their shooting ability than they could rightfully do for their FT Rate (which we both agree on, is bad). Volume is likely more of an issue of him being a primary kick option as opposed to having the ball in his hand considering who was running the point for them last year, but I haven't watched any of UNC-G's games to know any better.

Like I said, I understand the issues had with this commit, but at the end of the day, I have to trust the process as I did with the previous coach.

First game was 1-4, the went 0-1 in his next game. 7-9 the rest of the way.

As a freshman who I'm going to give some slack to for being nervous in his first 5 free throw attempts.

RE: 2021-22 Roster
Yeah, I mean, we heard Madsen was the best foul shooter on the team and he only shot 63.6% as a freshman. I noticed late in the year, he started taking one dribble before shooting, which was nice because I thought he was rushing previously. I would bet that McGinnis will eventually settle into being a 70%+ free throw shooter, and Madsen in the 80's. MAW went from 76.9% to 87.3% from freshman year to sophomore year as an example, but he also shot more free throws as a freshman than Madsen and McGinnis combined.

RE: 2021-22 Roster
Fwiw, Miller is very high on his shooting ability. He hit north of 50% from 3 his year at Link Prep which is knocking them down. I'd also say from his pics he is a legit 6'3 comparing him to Wes.

"McGinnis averaged 22 points and 3.7 rebounds per game at Link Year Prep while shooting 53 percent from three-point distance."

I tried to find his full stats from Link Year Prep online, but they weren't on the school's website or anywhere else that came up on the first page of Google. Link Year Prep seems to feed a lot of kids into college ball, although mostly at low-major and mid-major schools. There's another Link Year player in the 2021 class that Wes recruited. He ended up at St. John's, but also held offers from Ole Miss and Tulsa: https://247sports.com/player/omar-stanley-46103384/

Can't say I'm totally happy with how the roster is shaping up at this point though.

Besides Vogt, what scholly player came from the horizon?

Jaevin Cumberland. You could also count Jaume Sorolla, since Valpo moved from the Horizon to the MVC after his freshman or sophomore year I think.

Got it. Totally forgot about Sorolla but in my defense he was pretty forgettable. i should have remembered Jaevin though. in all frankness, i don't even know which teams are in either of those conferences that were referenced in your post.

If I remember correctly, Michigan wanted him pretty badly.

Jaevin was a solid pickup. He wasn't a playmaker or a great defender, but he's a great guy to have coming off the bench because you never know when he's going to get hot. There were a couple stretches in games where his hot shooting carried our offense.

He played a ton of 3-guard lineups at UNC-G, so I wouldn't be shocked with the former being the case.

Right now there is MAW, DDJ, Madsen, Saunders, McGinnis, and Newman who I think are all going to be primarily wing/perimeter guys. If you run 3-guard sets, you're going to be able to find minutes for most of those guys (MAW/DDJ/Newman as the starters with Madsen/Saunders/McGinnis as the replacements). My guess is that all of the younger guys will see at least 10 minutes a game unless he pulls some ballers from the rafters with his last two schollies, and even then, they're probably going to be interior guys instead.

I remember years ago, after the fight against XAVIER and several of UC's big men were suspended around 6 or 7 games, Cronin went to a 4 guard lineup and I think UC won them all. I like a smaller lineup if they have a lot of heart.

It’s what Mick did down the stretch and into the 6 games they played in the NCAA’s after they lost their 2 starting bigs . One post guy and wings and guards.

Helps greatly to have guys who can hit midrange shots off the dribble. Cant just live off of the 3 with a 4 out 1 in.

That ended up being- Cash Wright, Jaquon Parker, Sean Kilpatrick, Deion Dixon, and Gates in the post- if I am remembering correctly. You had a good mix of guys that could shoot, get to the rim, and rebound bigger than they were. I guess you would have the potential for something like that with our roster, but Gates was a house down low, and Davenport needs to get a lot tougher as a rebounder for us to pull that off.

That was a fun UC team to watch that season.

I'm no Villanova fan but they've certainly had lots of success with three and sometimes four guards on the floor together.

More than ever the key to basketball is getting your best players on the floor and making teams match up to you. Baylor basically had 4 guys 6'5 or under on the floor a majority of the time (really unless Mayer was playing, and he was more of a wing). Given the current roster situation it makes sense for UC to play small, unless they can find two starting level bigs with the last 2 scholarships. Davenport has the body to play a Parker type role on this team.

This is not to say it's bad to have bigs. It can be great. But you work with you have and if you have great wings, you can play smaller at the highest level. The best coaches are flexible and adapt to their roster.

Jay Wright at Villanova has made it work great. One big 6-8 240 or bigger, 2 wings in the 6-7 range that wont get abused being posted up and 2 combo guards. The guards that can take people off the dribble and draw attention for the wings to slash or find corner mid range or 3s.Let the 1 big pick and roll or weakside dumpoff.
