NMSU Financial Woes
Student athlete experience now has to be impacted due to the deficit at NMSU. Fewer games and smaller travel party on the table.
Quote: According to the director of athletics, Mario Moccia, the athletics department is currently facing a deficit of approximately $3.3 million.
Aggie fans have not been able to attend home football and basketball games for over a year now, and attendance at other sporting events has been extremely limited. If the pandemic does not get much better, and New Mexico does not begin reopening by the end of the summer or the beginning of the fall season, the department might be in even more trouble.

Entire athletic program was running on a "shoe string" budget, now >$3mil in the hole, and Chris "Hands" Jans gets another salary bump to (temporarily) stay.

RE: NMSU Financial Woes
The original $10-million debt became an anchor on the Athletic Dept. over 10-12 years ago. Over the years, Athletics has been paying the debt back into the general University fund and had dwindle it down such that it would be paid off within the next 3-4 years. With COVID, the debt has grown back up to $3-million plus. SO, the timeline will pushed back a few more years until NMSU is solvent and out of the red.
As for paying Jans, currently basketball is one of our revenue generators. NMSU can't afford to let that program slip. Until proven otherwise, NMSU will consider last season's results a COVID induced anomaly. Up to this point, Jans has been well worth his price tag. Once Tarleton State starts winning in basketball they will soon find out the cost of keeping a good D1 coach.

I wonder what NMSU's total athletic budget is? And I wonder what the budgets of the other WAC schools are...

You know you're a top-tier institution when your minor accounting glitches are larger than other schools' total budget.

We definitely operate on shoe string budget though. But we're half a mill less in the hole since last Tuesday. Apparently the article was produced before that announcement.

UNM is about $12M higher budget than NMSU. Interesting. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think the enrollment is much higher. What I googled only showed about 2,000 students more at UNM.

How is it interesting? I don't follow you. Did you think it was the opposite or something? Explain.

NuM is in a large metro area (1M vs 200k). NuM has double the undergrad student enrollment of NMSU (22,244 vs 11,675). ABQ is 45 minutes from Santa Fe. NMSU is over 4 hours away. The vast majority of NM legislators have degrees from NuM (all the lawyers do as NMSU does not have a school for lawyers). I could go on and on but you get the picture.
I wonder why the mighty Junior Aggies aren't shown under the AD budget article that was provided? Must be something to do with D2...

And while they aren't a rich school compared to many around the country, UNM does have a much larger endowment as well. NMSU really lags in that department compared to many universities like ours.

Just curious as to why there was such a difference and it has somewhat been answered. I am also curious if conference affiliation impacts the $ and if so, how much?

UNM is also in debt to academics and run deficits consistently on top of that. I'm not sure what their debt is in 2021, but it was about $5 million a couple of years ago. They make money from the Mountain West media deal, from bowl payouts that they split with other G5 schools, and NCAA tournament money. Essentially, similar to most FBS schools of their level. Not sure if that's what you mean because of their conference.

True, Tarleton currently has about half the athletic budget as nmsu. That will change over the next few years, but as of today it's true.
And one would think that such a deficit would create a distinct competitive advantage for nmsu, especially against a lowly transitioning school like Tarleton.
However, what we've seen unfold during our first year of transition is quite the opposite:
"Big 3" Sports, Tarleton vs nmsu Head to Head 2020-2021
Football 1-0 (complete and utter domination)
Basketball 1-1
Baseball 2-2
Total: Tarleton 4, nmsu 3
Or, in other words, Tarleton > nmsu
Just as I've been saying all along.

Honestly that’s a good question. When I googled it, NMSU has 24k total students compared to UNM 26k. But NMSU only has 14k students in Las Cruces compared to all UNM’s students being on the main campus. I’m not sure if the money is distributed the same for the branches as they are In the main campus. Main campus per main campus, NMSU is closer to Tarleton than it is UNM.

And still, Tarleton State has yet to set foot in Aggie Memorial Stadium, the Pan American Center, and Presley Askew Field.
In a normal year, Aggie basketball would have said thank you for the win in their 1st meeting with Tarleton State and traveled home to wait for a return game at the Pan American Center in front of 4-6K Aggie fans.

Illiterate Texan, correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t there some little virus that affected everything this year? Is this year really the year to be comparing teams? I’ve never used covid as an excuse for NMSU and I won’t now. But it affected every team and it wasn’t a normal year. If you want to hang your hat on this year, go for it.
PS, if you want to compare schools keep it to basketball. 99% of Aggie fans care about basketball and little else.
