Would've made a lot of sense to include Notre Dame when they were still in the Hockey East. Unfortunately these sorts of knock-off Beanpots can be pretty hit or miss. Was not a success in Minnesota.
I think Connecticut's is the only one still up and running, with UConn, Yale, Quinnipiac, and Sacred Heart. That one is fun now that Sacred Heart takes hockey seriously. They play it in Bridgeport.
A "Northern New England" version was tried with Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Lowell back before UVM joined Hockey East. Didn't take. I was never sure why Lowell was involved instead of Dartmouth. They also played it at campus sites, so it wasn't anything exciting.
The key, I think, is to have it be teams that are geographically compact but not in the same conference. That's rare.
The geographically compact thing is the more important one. The Beanpot has 3 of the 4 teams all in Hockey East, and all 4 of them were in the ECAC prior to Hockey East forming in the 80s. It's the fact that they're all D1 schools within a very compact area (with BC being the furthest away) and having access to a place like the Garden in the same general area.

It's too bad since it was the closest thing to a Beanpot-like tournament in the Midwest.
I can't say that I'm surprised, though. The Big Ten schools are going to only get more exclusionary in scheduling any road/neutral site game going forward in pretty much every sport (even hockey where it has been historically more egalitarian).

I think that you also need some level of perceived cultural parity. Consider the case of the "North Star Cup." Mankato, Bemidji, and St. Cloud all can maintain competitive hockey programs. But with the breakup of the WCHA, I think that the fan interest in watching Minnesota vs. Bemidji in a nonconference game has waned. Minnesota and to a lesser extent UMD are the cultural "big dogs" amongst the five hockey schools, whether this is reflected in the quality of hockey or not. You don't have this sort of dynamic in the beanpot; all of the teams are cultural peers.
A much more interesting North Star Cup would have been St. Thomas, Hamline, Augsburg, and Bethel, pre St. Thomas move-up.

Upper Midwest Showcase played as two different four-team tourneys ...
Top 4: North Dakota, Minnesota, UM-Duluth, MinnSt-Mankato
Bottom 4: St. Cloud, Bemidji, Augustana, St. Thomas
Team that loses two in the Top 4 weekend tournament is relegated next year; winner of Bottom 4 is advanced.

Interesting Lindenwood has Air Force at home again... pretty sure Air Force played AT Lindenwood last year, when Lindenwood was still a club team..

You'd think they'd have more than them, rather than having it be the only home series scheduled. With all of the indies that would love a home-and-home, how could you add North Dakota to that meat grinder for a transitioning club team? Those poor guys are going to get destroyed, and weekly road blowouts to top 15 programs isn't going to do much more for fan support than a couple home games against LIU and Alaska will. I have no idea what they're hoping to accomplish here, other than selling the players out for a quick buck.

I've added all-time NCAA DI mens ice hockey titles behind each team that has a title.
October 1/2, @ Minnesota 5
October 7/8, @ Michigan 9
October 14/15, home v. Air Force
October 21/22, @ AIC (Springfield, MA)
October 28/29, @ Bentley (Waltham, MA)
November 4/5, @ Army
November 18/19, @ Wisconsin 6
December 16/17, @ Denver 9
January 6/7, @ North Dakota 8
That list has 5 of the 7 top programs in all time titles (missing BC and BU at 5 each).
Lindenwood is coached by a North Dakota alumnus.

And AIC, while having never won a title, has been the little engine that could recently. Making the tourney as the last seed and having knocked off the #1 overall in one instance.

Different sport, but Bobby Bowden did this on the regular before Florida State became a powerhouse. Not saying Lindenwood will end up being one, but I think this will help the program in the long run.

They are. Zombo was on Adam Wodon’s podcast recently and stated that they have a 30 game schedule and another set up for the following year.

Confirmation of the new Assumption women's program joining the NEWHA:

Also sounds like NEWHA will be getting an autobid:
Quote:Assumption will begin administratively in the 2022-2023 season. During the 2023-2024 season, the team will participate in the NEWHA regular-season schedule, league playoffs, and will also be eligible to receive the NEWHA automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament.
It will be interesting to see if the women's tournament goes up to 12 spots, or continues with 11. This will be five autobids (Hockey East, ECAC, NEWHA, CHA, WCHA).

a) an existing B1G member adds hockey, or
b) the B1G adds an existing program as an affiliate member (to make eight in the BTHC).
I say "b" and the front runners would be:
- Arizona State after they have an on-campus rink
- North Dakota (to fill some of the empty seats at Minnesota and Wisconsin; old rivalries never die)
- Denver (it'd get the B1G into that market)
Who I don't see in a "b" scenario is UM-Duluth or UN-Omaha as "little brother" is not welcome at the party.
I don't believe that the Big Ten will expand with more hockey affiliate members. However, to the extent that it does, the only one that has a chance is Arizona State.
North Dakota is a non-starter. Even though this isn't a full membership, the academic factor absolutely would never, ever be passable for the Big Ten. This is a total and complete fan-based wish that would never, ever be allowed by the university presidents at all whatsoever.
Denver at least has a large market and better academics, but I don't believe that the Big Ten is going to consider anyone that isn't already either (a) a P5 school and/or (b) as academically qualified as anyone that the Big Ten would otherwise consider for full membership (e.g. AAU status or otherwise super-highly-ranked academically).
All of those schools besides ASU are in either the Hockey East (e.g. BC, BU) or the Ivy League members of the ECAC, which effectively leaves ASU as the only realistic affiliate option.
North Dakota - not exactly a fan-based wish, considering (A) the source of that rumor and (B) most of the fan base wanted UND to stay in the NCHC.
My apologies, but I know who you linked to and that is as big of a fan-based rumor as you'll ever find.
Let's not kid ourselves here: it's the Big Ten's choice. If UND wouldn't want Big Ten membership (which is always easy to say when it's never going to come), anyway, then it's water under the bridge.
So is that guy legit, given the recent UCLA/USC news? https://twitter.com/flugempire/status/15..._&ref_url=

Well if the B1G decides to also take the Arizona schools that would solve the ASU conference problem.
Now let's get USC and UCLA hockey started up.
