Behind a paywall but UVU admin team member is a finalist for North Alabama job

We now know the third finalist at North Alabama as The Times Daily reports it's Missouri Western (DII) AD Looney. On campus interview schedule: Ball State Deputy AD Fields leads off today with Looney on Wednesday & Utah Valley Deputy AD Foote on Friday. Of note: "UNA President Ken Kitts will have the final say. The semifinal round of interviews took place at the end of June and included seven others."

Utah Valley has hired a softball coach...

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University Director of Athletics, Dr. Jared Sumsion, has announced the hiring of Cody Thomson as the new softball head coach. Thomson becomes the program's sixth head coach during its NCAA Division I era.

Thomson has been with the University of Utah softball program since 2005 and was part of the program's transition into the Pac 12. He was elevated to a full-time assistant in 2009 and has been in that role for the past 12 seasons.

"Cody Thomson rose to the top of our nationwide search and stood out as one of the best pitching minds and coaches in the country," Sumsion said. "His reputation and personality, as well as his extensive experience as a coach in one of the premier softball conferences in the country, will prove vital in the continued growth of our program. Through the interview process, it was clear his number one priority is the academic and athletic success of our student-athletes. We are delighted Coach Thomson will be wearing Wolverine Green."

"First, I want to thank Coach Amy Hogue and the rest of the staff and administration at the University of Utah. I love that program, the University and the student-athletes I've been able to work with over the years," Thomson said. "I'm pumped for this new adventure and to be able to compete in the new-look WAC. I'm ready to get to work and coach our fantastic student-athletes. I'm thrilled and honored that Adam Sanft, Dr. Sumsion, Vice President Val Peterson and President Astrid Tuminez have the faith in me to hand me the keys to this program."

Maybe it just me but I didn't hear anything about Jovan Austin while he was at NMSU. I didn't even realize he was ever at NMSU until he was hired at UTRGV. However, being that he is intimate with Jans coaching techniques both as a player and as a staff member, I'm sure he will be able to give Figger some insight as to what Jans does daily to bring NMSU so much success. Maybe, Figger might implement some of the same coaching/recruiting/player development practices at UTRGV.

I sat at a table with Jovan Austin at a sixth man dinner once. He was one of Jan’s Players at Bowling Green. He was a grad assistant here before moving on and starting his coaching career. I have no idea what kind of coach he is, but if he played for Jans he is tough.

Baseball coach extended at ACU...

ABILENE – ACU athletics announced that head baseball coach Rick McCarty has signed a contract extension, keeping him with the program he took to the top through the 2026 season. McCarty turned around a program that was in the basement of the Southland Conference, and took it to new heights, culminating with a regular season championship this past spring. McCarty recently completed his third season with the Wildcats, and has a 69-55 record. The contract keeps him in the first-base dugout at Crutcher Scott Field for the next five seasons.

"I want to thank Dr. [Phil] Schubert and Allen Ward for the support they have extended to our baseball program and for believing in me as its leader," said McCarty. "I am honored to be the head baseball coach at ACU and I am looking forward to leading this program many more years to come. I am extremely proud of what our players, staff, alumni, and fans have been able to accomplish over the last few years. We are excited to build on that foundation in the years to come."

McCarty's short time at ACU has come with immediate success, as the team qualified for its first-ever Southland Conference Tournament just three years in. It's even more impressive to note that the 2020 spring was cut short after just 15 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the entire offseason was limited during that time as well to prepare for 2021. Despite all the challenges leading into the spring with cancellations and testing, and despite having one of the most inexperienced teams in the league, the transformation was evident. ACU won 36 games in 2021, including 25 in league play, and claimed its first-ever conference championship at the Division I level.
