On the other hand, if the SEC and Big Ten resist changes, and the other 3 leagues are not only financially disadvantaged but are also at risk of being left out of the playoff I think the chances for realignment go up considerably. 98, 99, 00, and 07 were the only years the ACC champ entered bowl season in the top 4.

Im inclined to think the playoff is the one most likely to change.

It’s not The ACC that needs a guaranteed access, it’s The Big Ten. Do you really think we would be seeing any change to the CFP if Delaney didn’t whine about it as he collected his severance on the way out the door.

Let’s not kid ourselves. The best thing that could have happened to college football was for The Big Ten being left at home in ‘18 & ‘19.

Personally I hope no conference gets an automatic bid unless the G5 gets at least two.

Everyone in the country is tired of watching the same 4 to 6 teams make the playoffs every year. It would be nice to see The Big 12, PAC and Big Ten get in every year but not at the expense of new blood.

You have a short memory— the ACC and for that matter the Big East (05-12 edition) would have missed the field of 4 most years in the BCS era if the CFP rules were in place.

Don’t kid yourself—the ACC needs an autobid.

I think all P5 conferences would want the autobids except for the SEC. G5 would also want an autobid(s) for themshelves. However, the SEC and ND would want a larger number of at large bids and would oppose the six team playoff with autobids (5-1) or the eight team playoff with autobids (5-1-2). I suspect that’s why the media now says the 12 team playoff is building support. The 12 team playoff (5-1-6) would satisfy everyone but I don’t know how it would work logistically. Would the contract bowls like the 12 team playoff and play-in games?

By the way, is Warren like Delaney? Delaney was very traditional and wanted to preserve bowl games if my recolletion is correct.

Right. I think the SEC is going to get outvoted on the autobid thing.

If the other 4 P5s want autobids for their champs that’s 8 of the 9 votes needed. Give the G5 an autobid and you’ve got a vote of 13-3 (SEC 2 votes and ND 1 vote, being the dissenters).

If ND and the SEC don’t find the 5-1-2 favorable to them I can see them countering with 5-1-6 and here’s why:

Extra at large bids are good for ND

If extra money is tied to each of the those at-large bids, that’s good for the SEC as they will probably have 3 or more teams in the field each year.

In an 8, 12 or 16 team playoff world, we will have 4 P conferences and 4 G conferences.
Each will have their own playoff.

RE: Working group considering a 16 team CFP
I made a suggestion on the SEC board that would create a larger, albeit weaker, Big 12 that would bring the P5 up to 74 schools. In a nutshell, I moved Virginia Tech and NC State to the SEC as well as Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Notre Dame to the ACC.

Then, I have the remaining seven B12 schools adding nine of the top G5 programs, resulting in the following 16 team conference.

East: Kansas St, West Virginia, UCF, Iowa St, Cincinnati, Memphis, USF and Kansas
West: TCU, Baylor, Boise St, Texas Tech, BYU, Houston, San Diego St and SMU

After moving the CCGs up to Thanksgiving weekend, so all can get a favorable time slot, I scheduled the quarterfinal playoff round (the CCG's are the first round) for the first Saturday in December. The SEC, ACC, B1G, PAC and B12 champs are AQ (autobid). The four highest ranked champs host the fifth champ plus the three highest ranked teams that did not play in a CCG.

The Quarterfinal winners go on to the semis at the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, while the 8 highest ranked non-semifinalists go to the other four NY6 bowls. The season is not extended (except that Week Zero now becomes Week 1), and no games (except Army-Navy) are scheduled between the first Saturday in December and the start of exams. All bowl destinations and pairings are known after the last quarterfinal game.

RE: Working group considering a 16 team CFP
Let's be honest.
If a group that represents many schools from across the spectrum is looking at a 16 team playoff and how playoff football will solve the revenue issues for everyone, surely major realignment will follow to help put all of college football into a format that can be marketed, not only to fans of schools, but to a larger audience.

In order to accomplish these goals, several things must happen.
1) create a league where those that don't want to compete, or can't compete at the highest level mostly for academic reasons can participate among themselves. Pay them a lesser amount, give them access to TV exposure, and make accommodations for them to continue to play rivalry games against old foes. The re-birth of the 'Magnolia'.
2)completely realign everybody into equally sized, somewhat equally talented, regional conferences (four), designed for playoff football. There is major shifting to accomplish these goals, but remember this alignment was manufactured for playoff football and to promote regional identity to get a greater audience involved.

4 X 15
Boston College, Wake Forest, Duke, Vanderbilt and Northwestern all move into a 'Magnolia'. To fill out this conference, add in the schools from the original idea (SMU and Tulane, Rice) and offer Army and Navy an opportunity to participate.

ACC
Syracuse, Penn State, Rutgers, Pitt, West Virginia
Maryland, UVa, Virginia Tech, NC State, Carolina
Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Miami

B1G
Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Indiana
Ohio State, Kentucky, Louisville, Illinois, Wisconsin
Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri

PAC
Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, California
Stanford, UCLA, Southern Cal, Arizona, Arizona State
Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma

SEC
Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Alabama
Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, LSU, Texas A&M
Texas, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State
