RE: Our fearless leader
Quote:President Joe Biden earned one of the lowest approval ratings among presidents in the modern era during his first 100 days in office, according to a new poll.
What are the details?
The ABC News/Washington Post poll, conducted April 18 to April 21, found that Biden's approval rating stands at a paltry 52%, far below expectations that Democrats had for the new president they predicted would be a mostly unifying figure.
In fact, Biden's approval rating is "lower than any president at 100 days in office since 1945," according to ABC News. Only Gerald Ford, who was publicly damaged by his decision to pardon Richard Nixon, and Donald Trump had lower approval ratings for their first 100 days in the White House. Still, Biden's 52% is 10 points higher than Trump's 42%.
Overall, the average approval rating for the 14 presidents from Harry Truman to Biden for their first 100 days in office is 66%, meaning Biden is 14% below the average.
The survey found that a majority of Americans — 64% and 65%, respectively — approve of Biden's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and supported his pandemic-related economic relief package. A majority, 58%, also support Biden's proposal to raise corporate taxes.
However, Americans are split on Biden's handling of the economy — just 52% approve — and his multi-trillion dollar infrastructure package, which also earned just 52% approval.
Biden is mostly hampered by his refusal to directly address the border crisis; just 37% of respondents said they approve of Biden's handling of immigration and the intensifying migrant crisis at the southern U.S. border.
According to ABC News, respondents also dislike Biden's trend toward enlarging the government, and a significant portion said they view him as "too liberal."
More broadly, 53 percent express concern that Biden will do too much to increase the size and role of government in U.S. society. Relatedly, 40 percent see him as "too liberal," more than said so about either of his most recent Democratic predecessors at 100 days – Barack Obama, 33 percent, and Bill Clinton, 26 percent. (This rose for Obama later in his presidency.)
What does this mean for Biden?
Although ABC News attributed the lower-than-expected approval marks to partisanship, the poll actually revealed that just 42% of Americans rate the economy positively under Biden, while 58% rate it negatively.
The data show that Biden did not experience a boost in that very important metric, which could spell disaster for his hopes of re-election if he is not able to reverse that perception.
"Biden's rating for handling the economy is essentially the same as Trump's in January, marking this as a clear challenge," ABC News reported. "Presidential fortunes often are closely linked to economic conditions."

Quote:House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday” that President Joe Biden’s first 100 days in office amounted to a “bait and switch.”
Anchor Chris Wallace said, “How do you rate President Biden’s first 100 days in office, and will you, or do you think will any Republicans, support his plan for trillions of dollars in new spending and new taxes for infrastructure and social programs?”
McCarthy said, “If I look at the 100 days, it’s more of a bait and switch. The bait was he was going to govern as bipartisan, but the switch is he’s governed as a socialist. If you’re looking at infrastructure, it’s the same as the coronavirus. Less than 9% went to the virus. Less than 6% in the infrastructure goes to infrastructure. Republicans would be the first one that would work with him, but I think the very first thing we would need to do, define what infrastructure is, roads, bridges, airports, broadband. We would get this done. He is trying to pick a number instead of first saying, what do we need to make America competitive?”
McCarthy added, “I have not met with the president one time, nor had one conversation.”

Quote:Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday” called President Joe Biden a “very destabilizing” president.
Anchor Chris Wallace said, “We are coming up this week on Joe Biden’s 100th day in office. You know, of course, is going to get that big speech to Congress. If you have said this week that you believe that Biden’s campaign was a fraud on the country because of how differently he is governing, but during the campaign, senator he did talk about big changes in infrastructure and racial inequality and a number of other issues, so why is it a fraud?”
Graham said, “Well, during the campaign, he made us all believe that Joe Biden would be the moderate choice, that court-packing was a bonehead idea. All of a sudden, we got a commission to change the structure of the Supreme Court. Making D.C. a state, I think that’s a very radical idea that will change the makeup of the United States Senate. AOC said his first hundred days exceeded our expectations. That’s all you need to know.”
He added, “I like Joe Biden, but I’m in the 43%. He’s been a disaster on foreign policy. The border is in chaos. The Iranians are off the mat. He is opening up negotiations with the Iranian regime that they haven’t done a damn to change. Afghanistan is going to fall apart. Russia and China are already pushing him around. So I’m very worried. I think it’s been a very destabilizing president, and economically he’s throwing a wet blanket over the recovery, wanting to raise taxes in a large amount and regulate America basically out of business. So I’m not very impressed with the first hundred days. This is not what I thought I would get from Joe Biden.”

Quote:During Sunday’s “State of the Union” on CNN, Vice President Kamala Harris declared that President Joe Biden had “an extraordinary amount of courage.”
Anchor Dana Bash said, “President Biden always said that he wants you to be the last person in the room particularly for big decisions just as he was for President Obama. He just made a really big decision, Afghanistan. Were you the last person in the room?”
Harris said, “Yes.”
Bash said, “And you feel comfortable?”
Harris said, “This is a president who has an extraordinary amount of courage. He is someone who I have seen over and over again make decisions based on what he truly believes based on his years of doing this work and studying these issues, what he truly believes is the right thing to do. I’m going to tell you something about him. He is acutely aware that it may not be politically popular or advantageous for him personally. It’s really something to see. I wish that the American public could see sometimes what I see because ultimately and the decision always rests with him, but I have seen him over and over again make decisions based exactly on what he believes is right, regardless of what maybe the political people tell him is in his best selfless interest.”

Quote:While a large majority Democrats approve of President Joe Biden's flooded border, a majority of American adults disapprove, according to the latest ABC News/The Washington Post poll.
There were 53% who disapproved of Biden's handling of the influx of illegal border crossers, including 44% who strongly disapproved among the poll's adults.
But 64% of Democrats at least somewhat approved of scores of migrants cramming into facilities in violation of COVID-19 guidelines on social distancing, compared to just 10% of Republicans.
Also, the poll found a majority of Americans (53%) are concerned Biden is going to "do too much to increase the size and role of government in the U.S.," including 32% very concerned. But that, too, did not resonate with Democrats (just 6% very concerned and 18% somewhat concerned.)
Despite the economy rebounding from the global coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, a large majority of U.S. adults have a "negative" view of the economic conditions right now (58%), as even a majority of Democrats (51%) see the Biden economy in a negative light, according to the poll.
Despite those views, Biden does score well overall in job approval (52% to 42%), economy approval (52%-41%), coronavirus response approval (64%-31%) in the poll.
Notably, Biden's $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan has 52% support compared to 35% opposition in the poll.
The Washington Post/ABC poll surveyed 1,007 U.S. adults between April 18-21 and with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Quote:Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., on Sunday hammered President Joe Biden for failing to deliver on his promise to work with Republicans to rebuild the nation battered by the coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Scott predicted Biden will return to that when he addresses Congress at a joint session on Wednesday.
“I’m sure he's going to talk about unity and bipartisanship which he has not done since he's been up there,” Scott said.
At his inauguration, Biden struck a conciliatory tone after a bitter race against former President Donald Trump — asking Americans who did not vote for him to give him a chance to be their president as well.
"To overcome these challenges to restore the soul and secure the future of America requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: unity," he said. "We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this - if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts."
But he’s yet to bring Republicans and Democrats together in Congress, with some GOP critics saying he’s caved to pressure from his own party’s left wing, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who lamented last month that Biden’s deal-maker reputation as a Senator “doesn’t exist” now that he’s in the White House.
Scott said he hopes Biden will also tackle other pressing issues in his speech to Congress.
“I wish he would talk about the crisis on the border — which he created,” Scott said.
“It is a crisis. I have been there there with [GOP Gov. Doug] Ducey to see he's created this crisis.”
“And why aren't all of our schools opened?” he asked. “What is he going to do about $33 trillion in debt, and this inflation? Gas prices picking up since his election, significantly over 70 cents a gallon.”
“That's what I would like him to talk about,” Scott said.
