I remember while growing up telling my mom I wanted a McNugget Happy Meal as she was cooking at the stove.

They will have equal acceptance of those suggestions.

A lot of schools have a lot of holes in their budgets after 2020 (P5 and G5 alike). Worse yet---limited Covid seating rules could linger to an extent into the 2021-2022 football/basketball season. I could see these financial "budget holes" being a motivating factor in pushing the CFP to expand sooner than later. 04-cheers

True, but this is the the magician's old trick. Here look at what I am doing in my left hand. While my right hand does all the work.

I would assume they have already staged out the slow expansion, this is just them going through the motions of well we could maybe do this. What it might do is show us where the public eventually wants it to end up as people debate the options. Then the p5 will begin to work to game the final outcome the public wants into their money/power grab. Just like they did when the idea of a play off was first broached and then we got the BCS because people just wanted to make sure #1 played #2 for the championship. Or they did when they were "forced" to the current CFP because then their was no chance for a split championship because the CFP winner by default gets everything but the AP and the AP is going to have the top 1-5 teams roughly the same after everything is played with the top four.

Always they almost give us the competition we want to see, just to twist so they get more control and exclude more people. So we will get expansion to 6 and people will talk about the p5 always being in the 6 and how maybe a g5 could get there. But all the g5 will be just outside as before because it's at larges selected by the committee. Then when this contract is finally up they will go to 8, all at large. Than argue for the p5 to get auto bids and only them because their conference champions have been in it every year since the expansion to six. They'll leave a path for independents and the g5 to get in but only if they make the committees top ten. Which only ND will ever do. So it will continue till they get to sixteen and finally give a spot to the top g5 team who will always be 13-16 and basically play in their opponents back yard where the committee and p5 will use the record and lack of appearences before they gained an auto spot in the 16 to continue to suck up all the money while pretending it is a competition.

RE: CFP Expansion

Quote:“In its analysis, the working group has reviewed some 63 possibilities for change,” Hancock continued. “These included 6-, 8-, 10-, 12- and 16-team options, each with a variety of different scenarios.”

Those 63 options included all of the most commonly discussed potential formats, applied to each field size: automatic bids for different numbers of conference champions, designated spots for Group of Five champions, fields determined solely by rankings and playoff brackets involving byes, a source told The Athletic. Basically, the working group is looking at the same ideas that sports fans scribbling on napkins at a bar are — while considering the constraints of the Playoff’s major media partner and its contracts with various bowl games. Right now, the initial CFP contract with ESPN is set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 college football season.

Quote:Any permanent change to the size and format of the Playoff would need to come from the CFP’s Board of Managers, which is made up of 11 presidents and chancellors. The Board of Managers will also meet in June.

FYI, that current membership is:

Mark Kenum, Chair (president of Mississippi State)
Eric Barron (president of Penn State)
Rodney Bennett (president of Southern Miss)
Joe Castro (president of Fresno State)
Gordon Gee (president of West Virginia)
Jack Hawkins (president of Troy)
Rev. John Jenkins (president of Notre Dame)
Kirk Schulz (president of Washington State)
John Thrasher (president of Florida State)
Satish Tripathi (president of Buffalo)
R. Gerald Turner (president of SMU)

Quote:“Expansion is inevitable,” Mountain West commissioner Thompson told The Athletic in January. “We will get to a minimum eight-team field or larger at some time in the near future. Is that a couple of years? One year? Two years? Four years? I don’t have that answer.”

RE: CFP Expansion
Talk about the school presidents all you want, but the guy whose vote matters most is Jimmy Pitaro, the ESPN chairman. The CFP can't go anywhere but ESPN (or ABC) until after the current contract is supposed to end, so if ESPN doesn't put up a lot more money for an expanded playoff, then it won't happen soon.

ESPN would have loved a bigger playoff to begin with, so I think they would be happy to buy into an expanded playoff. The money was always there--it was the schools that were not willing to to it. That said---all the same logistics issues that existed then exist now. So most of those 63 scenarios are just tilting at windmills. Eight is the only realistic target and I think most understand that going in.

Yet I understand they have also made an announcement that there will be no expansion in either the upcoming 2021 season or the 2022 season.

Definitely interesting news but I just can't see any playoff format that gives Boise State (for ex) a better chance of making it than Purdue, Penn State, Florida State, etc being accepted.

Right. That’s why 16 is the best. You get the 10 conference champs maximizing conference CG’s and 6 at-large bids, which gives each P5 conference essentially two bids or more.

And by "best" you mean "fantasy".

For that matter, 24 teams, like FCS, would be an even better playoff. I would do that if I was the dictator of college football. But, like everyone else here, I am not the dictator of college football.

Anything beyond 8 will reduce bowl games to permanent irrelevance, and there is no evidence that either ESPN or the powers of CFB are ready to take that step.

Newsflash, most of the bowls are already irrelevant. You can continue to keep the bowls, regardless of how big you make the playoffs. You can have a 16 team playoff and let's say, 35 bowls, easily.

For anyone interested in fairness, you know the actual way that most every other league in the world determines their champions (well other than European soccer), you go with a 16 team playoff, with 10 conference winners and 6 at larges. If the SEC gets 3 at larges, so be it.

If anything, the Pac 12 should be all over this deal, as their conference has sucked big time, and can't get a team in the 4 team playoff to save their lives.

Okay, when you find out that ESPN, the Big Ten, and the SEC, ie the people who actually make these decisions, are ready to implement a playoff larger than 8, then you can go ahead and tell me I was wrong about them.

RE: CFP Expansion
The Bowls are irrelevant, except two things:

1) the fill all those otherwise empty weeknight slots for ESPN once MACtion November completes.
2) Coaches like those extra practices, and the paycheck bonuses for playing in a bowl game.

Yes it's absurd that 74 schools play in Bowl games. But you need buy in from Coaches and a viable Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday Night schedule program for ESPN and ESPN2. Until you have that buy in, expect the Playoff to not be more than 8, and to have the Virgin Island Bowl presented by Feminine Hygiene Products on ESPN2 on Tuesday Night in mid December.

No, I think it can happen eventually, but 24 is too large.

Think about it. You're pretty much guaranteeing 11 P5 teams playoff money. Why would they turn it down? In this era of free market college athletes, why not? It's not like they have to fake concern for the student athletes anymore.

The first two rounds can be campus sites and keep the rest the same. Play through December and create a new tradition.

This is how a 16 team playoff with auto-bids would have looked. Straight top 16 in the polls after the CCG's is pretty interesting as well. BYU ends up at 13 and Louisiana at 16.

1- Alabama*
16- UAB*

8- Oklahoma*
9- Coastal Carolina*

5- Texas A&M
12- Iowa State

4- Notre Dame
13- San Jose State*

3- Ohio State*
14- USC*

6- Cincinnati*
11- Georgia

7- Indiana
10- Florida

2- Clemson*
15- Ball State*

* auto-bid

ESPN would be delighted with a big playoff and diminishing the upper tier bowls because they only pay for broadcast rights to those bowls and have to deal individually with them. They get stunk with some real clunkers of ranked teams vs barely survived league play games because of the bowl agreements.

Skim the best off to the drama of a playoff and pick up leftovers for a group of bowls mostly owned and managed by ESPN is huge win for them.

Instead of three games impacting the title in postseason 15 would be a delight for them.

ESPN isn’t going to be complaining if Sun Belt, MWC, AAC, MAC title games become part of the Road to Tampa or wherever the playoff championship is. Seriously the number of Clemson, Alabama, and Ohio State fans tuning into G5 title games shoots up the audience.

The Power 5 and their relationship to top bowls is the obstacle. Right now CFP has revenue coming in from bowls via their ticket operations and marketing then from ESPN plus the parts of marketing ESPN gets to handle. The whole pack of gum can go to ESPN without all that skim for six bowl directors and staff and the cost of the “scouting trips” and various community activities the NY6 do.

The ESPN fantasy is four weekends of playoff football with bowl games sprinkled around on weeknights and any bye weekend and maybe a bowl or two as lead in to the semifinals and as well NY Day.

It’s cracking that bowl P5 relationship that is the bear and why 6 or 8 is more likely
