I think expanding, inclusive and diverse as it’s tagged, is a noble move, I think the problem comes when you cancel in the process. There’s no reason W&M can’t honor anyone of significance with new buildings, pavilions, etc. Canceling other previous honors to accomplish this is where it gets devisive and in my opinion, a positive attempt becomes negative execution.

None of us are saints and I’m sure all these new names have skeletons as well. Everyone does. History though should be left alone, not cleansed.

Some of the previous namesakes simply should not have been "honored" in the first place. For some context, here is the namesake of the former Morton Hall: https://www.dailypress.com/virginiagazet...tory.html. Not a person or record we should be honoring - then or now.

I agree, how will new visitors to the College find out that Morton was such a terrible person they named the worst building on campus after him?

I can confidently say outside of Washington, Jefferson, and Tyler, I didn't know anything about any of the other building namesakes while I was on campus (edit: except wren of course).

... I will wave 'hi' to the other Taliaferro residents in the thread though!

I lived in Taliaferro Hall, as a Freshman. Usually, the inhabitants were the only ones that knew it was pronounced Toliver Hall.

I lived in Fauquier Hall. Pronounced Fo-key-aye nowhere else in America.

You may be able to tell I did as well!

You cannot rewrite history but should use it as a guide for the future.

Why do some think change is an attempt to erase history? Why can't it just be change?

When my wife changed her surname to my surname, she didn't do so in an attempt to erase her maiden name or the history behind it.
