Hopefully the coaches are right about Walker. However, without having seen him, it is hard for me to believe that a 2 star freshman would bring more to the table than a 3* (out of high school) 5th year senior. That's the thing about a graduate transfer. As a 5th year senior, I believe Ben would be more of an impact player than all but the top 100 or so freshman entering college next season.

I remember thinking, when "Too Tall" was a 5th year senior, that he was likely as good as just about any freshman big man in the country. If the graduate transfer rule existed back then, no doubt somebody would have tried to "steal" him. Getting a player that has grown and developed, over 4 seasons, is a less risky endeavor than signing a freshman (again unless we are talking about a Top 100-150 player) if you are looking for immediate impact.

I am not real smart, but it looks to me like the "one-time free transfer" rule just opens the door to even more raiding of lower-level rosters even than is currently going on. So basically every player on every team is fair game, at least for one year. So, again, why recruit freshmen? Even to the big schools.

The juco market should go through the roof.

Really don't see much reason for a program like ours to recruit freshman. Used to be 100% in favor of signing freshman and developing them over 4 or 5 years. Things have changed dramatically because of this new transfer rule. Some of this started with the graduate transfer rule, but this was limited to a relatively small number of players. The new rule has really opened the floodgates and we will have to adjust quickly or be left behind. I'm afraid that, in a year or 2, any stigma associated with "abandoning" the program that first game you the opportunity to play college ball will be a thing of the past. It will just normal operating procedure to move on to a better program if the opportunity is there.

The smart mid-level coach is going to develop close relationships with the better juco programs and milk them for all they are worth.

Having a close relationship with some high major coaches would be beneficial as well. Hopefully, they could steer players, not quite good enough to get significant minutes, our way. I could see Porter doing that, if Steve were still here or Beard doing that if Wes was still here. Not sure about Darrell's relationships but he is reportedly friendly with Coach Ewing and Coach Hardaway.
