Notre Dame, Indiana schedule 2030-31 home-and-home football series
Quote:In the first game of the series, Notre Dame will host Indiana at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2030. The series will conclude with the Fighting Irish traveling to face the Hoosiers at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2031.

Notre Dame and Indiana haven’t squared off on the gridiron since a 49-27 Fighting Irish victory in 1991. The two schools have met 29 times overall with Notre Dame leading the series 23-5-1.

And still there is no Stanford game scheduled after 2024 for the Irish and no re-scheduling of the USC series after 2026.

This is great news. Being a Hoosier by birth I spent a good portion of my life around Indiana fans that rooted for Notre Dame Football and Indiana Basketball.

In my old neighborhood, one of the guys across the street, a school teacher, would run up the Notre Dame flag in early September and leave it up until basketball got rolling and he would hoist his IU flag.

The years IU sucked in basketball (and they have a bunch since firing Bobby) he would leave the Irish flag up.

The years they were both not very good, he would leave both flags down...03-lmfao

I kinda wish I still lived across the street from him to see what he does when they play each other in football. 03-lmfao

This strikes me as an odd match up. Generally, ND likes to play their away games outside of the Midwest, or at least outside of driving distance from South Bend.

I could see this game as a Shamrock Series game in Indianapolis but home and home is not what I would expect.

Future ND games:
23 at Louisville
24 at Purdue
26 at Purdue
27 at MSU
28 at Purdue
30 at Louisville
31 at Indiana
33 at Louisville
35 at Louisville

South Bend is in Indiana. As such they have some degree of responsibility to look after the State of Indiana and to keep good will in the state. I see it as a political/social/cultural thing and it allows their students and in state fans to make an easy trip on their behalf.

How did ACC member Louisville get on the ND schedule so often? Did they sign a side agreement in addition to the 5 contracted ACC games?

Average of 5 games a year for 16 more years past 2022 = 80 games divided by 14 schools is an average of 5.7 games remaining - which of course will be 5 and 6 depending on the school. The games are scheduled out to 2037 - ND has 7 games each left with FSU and Clemson, 6 with NC State, GT, and Pitt, and 5 with UNC and Duke, etc.

ND and Indiana have not played against each other since 1991.

ND has not played a game in Bloomington, Indiana since 1950.

(ND and Indiana have only played six times since then, none at Indiana)

I would rather ND not schedule more Big Ten teams (Jack Swarbrick didn't ask for my input) but if it must, Indiana is not a bad choice.

Let’s be honest. ND / IU games wouldn’t have been competitive until recently. Indiana had been horrendous since firing Bill Mallory. I remember Don Fischer saying Indiana would regret doing it. I know many IU fans that agreed with him.

I’m glad to see the Hoosiers getting back to respectability. Louisville is playing them in ‘23 in Indy, ‘24 in Louisville and ‘25 in Bloomington.

I doubt that Notre Dame as a private school feels any responsibility to look after the State of Indiana, just as the State of Indiana feels no responsibility to look after the Irish.

For the most part, I would say yes, which is why ND hasn't played IU or Purdue in awhile. But, do that too much, and you cut your nose to spite your face, like what Miami(FL) did for awhile.

That's not the way it works in the real world. Even as a private University, the State of Indiana can do many things to cause ND problems or help ND with problems, especially when private entities seek tax exemptions for their private enterprises that compete with those who do pay taxes. Hotels and golf courses are good examples - https://morrisinn.nd.edu/about-morris-inn/. Duke and Campbell used their political influence to obtain tax breaks for their golf courses and certain other properties but there is no need for the real world to break into athletics.

ND has a good relationship with the State of Indiana.

Nobody in Indiana state government really cares all that much about whether or not ND plays the University of Indiana in football.

How do I know?

They haven't played in 30 years, will not for another 10 and have only played each other 6 times in the last 70 years.
