Last Spring Practice
DeKalb April 17 - Upper 40s, no wind, sunny. End of practice high 50s
10am start - 200 people in stands; largest of the 3 practices.

I focus on Offense with a bit of Defense sprinkled in. I left roster sheet at home so you may see a number instead of a name and I tried not to guess too much in case I was wrong.

Overall: This team has some first-team all-MAC talent. This team will be competitive.

QB:
Hampton is wearing 2. First time I've seen him play as he missed the last 2 fan practices. My first opinion of his is impressive. He should be playing HS football this spring as Illinois HS football was delayed. He showed an excellent arm strength and tight spiral. If I graded based on arm strength he is up there with Rocky then Thompson and Fletcher.

He also got plenty of extra reps as perhaps the coaches wanted to see him play too. I don't think he'll play this year but he has me asking that maybe he could play. Normally we hope freshman don't play as experience means alot. I now see why Hammock kept mentioning him in his QB comments.

In terms of QBing as a verb, I see this ranking: Rocky, Thompson, Hampton and Fletcher. Rocky had a great practice again. I'd bet that he'll be starter. I'll note I've only seen 3 practices.

RB: Waylee is just phenomonal. If he stays healthy he is going to be successful.
Collins runs hard usually between the tackles and will have a big role on team.
Ratkovich is multi-dimensional. The spring format of no complete tackling does them no justice. These two look to break through contact for extra yards.
Ducker was wearing the green jersey and adds to the RB depth.

TEs: look solid as well. They have a role is this passing offense.

WRs: If defenses key on 1 guy the others will burn them. I like this group. They all can catch and run. McCray is for real. Tucker must use stickum.

Defense: Devin Lafayette is trying to show that he is special. Almost single-handedly won the second half for the defense.

Juiced is a Defensive End- No number. I'm sure someone can find on twitter etc...
Green jersey RB is Ducker I believe (otherwise this report is messed up)
POTD - Player of the Day jersey is Waylee

1st play is coach vs coach pass play. Rocky deep out to coach but misses by 1 yd. Defended by another coach. Good energy.

Special teams drill
CBs do the Peanut punch drills

Hampton to tucker 30y
Collins 4y
Oline false start

Fletcher #4
Ratkovich left side short side td 55 yards

POTD/Waylee weaves up middle for td. Super fast. Just on another level.
Drucker in
Rocky to outside first down looking great
Rocky to 47 for 4 outside

Rocky fake handoff pass to Tucker wiiiidddeee open for td. 50 yards.

Hampton green for 3y Drucker?
Hampton to 82/TE over middle for 20y
Hampton to 8 outside
Hampton is a steal. This kid looks so poised and accurate.

Fletcher perfect throw outside for 6y to 9
Fletcher to Collins outside for 8y
Fletcher to 81 for 6 over middle. Easy throw and catch. Nice vision by both.
Blitzes picked up but throw to 7 inc. Timing off almost picked.

Rocky to Ratkovich 25y
POTD/Waylee for 3y
POTD/Waylee jump cut for 7.. wow vision
Rocky keeper for 5y plus
POTD for another 12y. This kid is awesome.
Rocky to McCray under throw TD slightly because he was WIDE OPEN.
Offense is dominating. Last week seems like a mirage.

Hamption to outside for pitch and catch. Another wow
Hampton WR screen tipped. Jumping DE makes play.
Hampton to 9 for hands catch close to int. but 6y catch
Hampton scramble for 1st
21 to outside tagged in backf
From behind
Hampton to 11 covered catch 30y qb hit
Hampton scramble for 1st
Trick play. Qb covered. whistle blows play dead.
Defense must have seen it before.
Hampton to 9. 8y. Long drive continues.
4th and 2
Def wins at line. Stuffs Ratkovich.

Rocky to 83 for 7y
Rocky to Tucker. Hands on sidelines. He is Ball-in today.

Green/Ducker cuts back for 45 y td. 13 doesn't give up and as he stretches for goal and makes contact ball comes out. Fumble. Def recovers and is jubilant.

Hampton back in. Coaches must want to see him in action.
5y run by RB
6 yard zip pass timing was fantastic. Throw before WR completed cut. 1st down
Qb keeper 3y
Rat caught in backfield minus 1

Hampton 55 y to McCray to 5y line
My buddy says our QBS - Present and future have talent.
Rat 1y run
Hampton keeper minus 2
Hampton to Rat bobbles pass - no td. Close but no cigar.

New series
Thompson to Collins for 2y
Collins for 3 more
False start O line
Designed QB keeper for 8y
Collins for first down

Thompson to 81 for 7 yards
Collins for 1. 3rd and 1
Green is 7

1st down
13-Lafayette blitz knocks down pass. Nice play.
Thompson floats ball over WR on short throw
Thompson scramble for 8.

New series
Hampton back in
Wr screen covered throw away
McCray slant on time but he didn't look incomplete
Lafayette interception. Dude is a player. 2 last week, 1 this week plus fumble caused and pass deflected and I wasn't focuse on the D. Coaches better get him out of the offensive huddle.

Hampton pass outside to 11 never got there.
Hampton yanked and Fletcher in
Collins for 2y
Hampton to 10 for 4y 4th and 2
Collins finds hole for 1st
Collins for 4y
Qb keeper for 4y. 3 and 2
WR outside throw is high caught and hit. 14 on reception.
Fletcher and 2 Rat runs for first
Collins outside 2y
Fletcher qb sack by whole d line
Fletcher to 85 high and tipped and 24 intercepts.
Practice over.
Offense won first half easily and defense stuck with it and won second half based upon turnovers. This was my scorecard.

Hammock hands out the I work for 15 tshirt (or something close to it). Many on team achieve.

The rest of Tshirt handouts were shown on twitter earlier already.

Hammock makes special mention of he recruited Waylee and said he wants that guy on his team.
Devin Lafayette mvp on D which is like saying the sun will come up tomorrow.

Young fan visitor joined team circle to lead team in "Dogs" chant exit. Team was responsive and enthusiastic.

Punters finally get chance to punt practice as families enter field and other players greet them. We felt they needed fans so we stayed and watched. Dude has talent. Glad we stayed.04-rock

RE: Last Spring Practice
Sure sounds like there are a ton of guys making the next step in the weight room and practice field.

Feels like this could be a real good team, not just this next season, but for seasons to come.

Great write up!

RE: Last Spring Practice
Big praises for Waylee and Lafayette :

"Harrison Waylee, I think he broke a 70-yard run every day," Hammock said. "He's going to be an explosive and dynamic runner for this team; I spoke to [NIU Hall of Fame running back] Garrett Wolfe about him and said, come mentor this young man. Defensively, Devin Lafayette started six games as a true freshman and he has made a big, big jump this spring. I couldn't be more excited about his future and what he can do for us on defense."

Wow. Those are some moves. It sure feels like there are more than a few offensive weapons this year.

Ducker looks to be all healed up. If his pass-blocking is up to snuff, he could be real dangerous on crucial 3rd-down (or any down, really, but especially on 3rd down) situations; pass-blocking, pass-catching, and short-yardage, it won’t tip-off the play-calling to the opposing Defense in the slightest. Versatility is a great asset.

Might be missing something but is Hammock tagging the wrong Ducker on these tweets?

Nope he’s just showing off his young running backs to his running backs that went Pro. Looks like marketing to me...
