What's the word, UC fans? Davenport's sticking around but do ya expect Eason to stay also?

Eason is the only one we’re really waiting for left. It’s a real toss up. Going to depend on Miller’s sales pitch. Hope he can get it done.

RE: Cincinnati hires Wes Miller (UNCG) as its Next MBB Coach
wes miller did an interview and describes what he wants UC to be and what he recruits..
makes no mention of offense

wants to win the defensive and rebounding battles, make you feel like nothing did in practice will work, fear playing cincy because of physicality on defense and rebounds

he recruits defense and rebounding.. they will occasionally get so offensive skill guys but they have to be tough and have potential for defense

more or less should fit in the aac and our league MO

So another dreary rockfight team that slogs its way to a tournament bid and is completely unwatchable for 70% of the year?

Gross.

College sports should be entertaining. While I think the AAC is not a bad league at all, most of the conference makes me want to rip my eyes out.

Right - he's going to recruit long athletes. Eason fits that to a T. No more Chris Vogt's and Rap Ivanusaks'.

RE: Cincinnati hires Wes Miller (UNCG) as its Next MBB Coach
Mick Cronin's UCLA team was fun to watch this year, and finished 13th in Kenpom offensive efficiency. The 2017 and 2018 teams both finished top 50 in Kenpom offensive efficiency, and while I wouldn't call those two teams offensive juggernauts, they weren't boring to watch by any means. The difference in those 3 Mick Cronin coached teams compared to others we saw at UC? Talent. If Wes Miller can recruit at similar level to Mick during the Troy Caupain/Gary Clark/Jacob Evans/Jarron Cumberland years, I think you'll see some good offense. 3 things that Wes does a little differently than Mick:

1 - He likes to press a lot. Mick pressed some and did emphasize deflections/forcing turnovers, but we weren't that press-heavy of a team during his time here.

2 - He encourages guys to let it fly from 3. Wes Miller coached teams shoot a higher volume of 3's than Cronin coached teams.

3 - He has already said multiple times that as long as guys play with effort, intensity, and focus, he is not quick to pull guys for turning the ball over occasionally or taking a poor shot. Mick was very quick to yank guys who made mistakes.

So what you should see from UC going forward is a lot of pressing, forcing turnovers, transition opportunities, and shooting lots of 3's. I'm hopeful that he will take the best traits of Mick Cronin and add a little more fun.

There's a big difference between emphasizing defense & rebounding and exclusively playing rock fights. The very best teams play with a foundation of defense and rebounding with enough offensive skill and pace to score efficiently.

There's a difference between Mick Cronin (pre-UCLA) and Kelvin Sampson. Ironically Mick finally was willing to accept and adapt some at UCLA, which was part of the reason for their increased success at the end of the year.

In his presser, Coach Miller also said offensively as a player there is nothing worse than having to look over your shoulder at coach or worry about making mistakes all the time. He mentioned something about guys needing to earn the freedom but he fully intends to allow them to play on offense.

We'll see, but nothing worse than the PG literally staring at Cronin for 10 seconds as he brought the ball up the court. I'm a Cronin fan btw and hope he does well going forward. He teaches kids the right way and they all seemed to have great character when they graduated or went to the NBA during his time at UC.

Q&A: UC men's basketball coach Wes Miller talks roster rebuilding, program legacy and motivating players

.

EXCERPTS:

UC's next head men's basketball coach Wes Miller sat down with WCPO 9 Sports Anchor Keenan Singleton the day he was announced as the 28th coach in program history.

"CINCINNATI — UC’s new head men’s basketball coach was able to convince Mike Saunders to return to the Bearcats after the freshman guard put his name in the transfer portal.

Miller sat down with WCPO 9 Sports Reporter Keenan Singleton the day he was announced as the 28th head coach in program history.

WCPO: A lot of people see five guys on the Cincinnati roster, and it doesn't look like the best landscape in college basketball right now. What do you see when you look at this roster and when you see this program?

WM: There's five guys on the roster, but there’s a handful more that could potentially be back on this roster. I don't think it needs to be as dire as it appears. The guys that I've talked to that are in the portal, they love Cincinnati. They came here for a reason. They're open to coming back. I think we can build with the current players that have been in the program. They already understand what it takes to be successful here... they know what it takes to compete with Houston and Wichita State and the other great programs in this league and the great programs around this country.

So I think we need to start there, but make no mistake about it -- we need to put a great team together, a team that can compete from day one. Start with these current guys, then go out on the recruiting trail and try to put a team together that can compete. Mike Saunders saying “yes” -- I think all these guys that don't know me, that were in the portal or not, that say ‘hey, I'm willing to go two feet in with you,’ that'll touch me. And I'll think about that every day that I coach them moving forward.

WCPO: You spoke about the transfer portal during your introductory press conference. You mentioned it will be a tool this university will utilize. From day one, where do you go with it?

WM: There's been a number of young people and high school coaches and summer coaches and people with relationships to prospects reaching out, and I've told them to hang on a second. Let me make sure where these guys are in this program. They've been through a lot. It's going to be about the players first, and they're the current players here. From there, we'll hit the recruiting trail pretty hard."

TRANSFER PORTAL UPDATES:

Two freshmen guards reversed their decisions to transfer from Cincy:

Mike Saunders (15.5 mpg; 3.5 ppg; 1.4 rpg)

Mason Madsen (19.6 mpg; 6.5 ppg; 3.0 rpg)

https://news.yahoo.com/mason-madsen-rema...HsLIrINLR5

.

Transfers to Cincinnati:

Hayden Koval (7'1" Sr. C - UNCG) (19.6 mpg; 7 ppg; 3.8 rpg)

John Newman III (6-5 Sr. F - Clemson) (15.6 mpg; 3.7 ppg; 2 rpg)

.

Transfers from Cincinnati:

Tari Eason (4 stars; F) - LSU (19.6 mpg; 7.3 ppg; 5.9 rpg)

Zach Harvey (4 stars; G) - UCSB (16.3 mpg; 6.4 ppg; 1.2 rpg)

Gabe Madsen (3 stars; G) - Utah (6 mpg; 1.5 ppg; 1 rpg)

Mamoudou Diarra (3 stars; C) - uncommitted (8.7 mpg; 2.3 ppg; 2.1 rpg)

Chris Vogt (2.7 stars; C) - uncommitted (19.4 mpg; 5 ppg; 3.5 rpg)

.

So far, it appears that Cincy has replaced most of what it is losing in the transfer portal.

.

Current Roster:

1. David Dejuilius - Sr (PG) (29.5 mpg; 9.1 ppg; 4.5 rpg; 4.2 apg)

2. Hayden Koval - Senior © (19.6 mpg; 7 ppg; 3.8 rpg)

3. John Newman III - Senior (SF) (15.6 mpg; 3.7 ppg; 2 rpg)

4. Mike Adams-Woods - Junior (G) (29.7 mpg; 8.6 ppg; 2.5 rpg)

5. Rob Banks - Junior (SF) (4.5 mpg; 0 ppg; 1.4 rpg)

6. Jeremiah Davenport - Junior (PF/SF) (28.6 mpg; 11.7 ppg; 5 rpg)

7. Mason Madsen - Sophomore (G) (19.6 mpg; 6.5 ppg; 3.0 rpg)

8. Mike Saunders Jr. - Sophomore (PG) (15.5 mpg; 3.5 ppg; 1.4 rpg)

9. Viktor Lakhin - Freshman (6'11" C) (recruit from Russia)

NOTE: This information was reported today at this link:

https://247sports.com/college/cincinnati...07/?page=8

.

With 9 guys on their roster and at least one skilled player per position, things could be worse. Cincy should be able to fill their open roster spots, through the transfer portal.

Some of these guys will need to maximize their productivity in 2022-23, and the team is probably going to need to add a couple of scorers and rebounders in order for the Bearcats to have a successful season.

Exactly what kind of success they might be capable of having will depend on how they fill out their roster.

.

UPDATE: Cincinnati Enquirer

Wes Miller, Cincinnati Bearcats pick up commitment from former UNCG guard A.J. McGinnis

Keith Jenkins, Cincinnati Enquirer 2 hrs ago

McGinnis averaged more than six points per game for the Spartans last season as a freshman. He scored a career-high 14 points in 19 minutes in an 85-66 win on Feb. 3 at The Citadel.

McGinnis is the sixth commitment Miller has earned since taking over the Bearcats' program and the 11th scholarship player on Cincinnati's 2021-22 roster.

McGinnis joins guards David DeJulius, Jeremiah Davenport and Mika Adams-Woods, who are all expected to return next season.....accompanied by junior forward Rob Banks, sophomores Mike Saunders Jr. and Mason Madsen, 6-foot-11 sophomore forward Viktor Lakhin, Clemson transfer John Newman III, Hensley and Koval.

Banks was put on scholarship (NOTE: he's a walk-on).

Koval, a 7-foot-1, 220-pound graduate center from Prosper, Texas, announced his commitment to Cincinnati on Thursday, while Hensley, a 6-foot-8, 205-pound sophomore forward...announced he was joining Koval at UC... last week.

We've got just about enough guys to be middle of the pack in the league now. If we're going to be a factor in the conference race, we need to either find an all-conference type player in the portal, or see multiple young guys on the roster take big steps forward.

With these new additions, Cincy has definitely raised the floor for where they can expect to compete in the AAC standings next season.

Right now, I see them as a middle-of-the-pack team along with UCF, Tulsa, and Temple.

If they can add another scoring guard/wing and a few more competent bigs, maybe they'll give SMU and Wichita a run in the next tier.

Looks like our suspected assistant coach hires started following Tristan Clark who was an injury retirement out of Baylor but seems potentially interested in coming back to the game. Averaged 14/8 as a starting inside man in 2018-19 for them.

Cincy lands their 3rd UNCG-affiliated transfer of the week in 6'7 forward Jarrett Hensley.

Former 4-star HS recruit who struggled to make an impact in limited minutes as a freshman last season.
