A LEAGUE OF COACHES ...
With Stan Heath now at Eastern Michigan, the league now has veteran coaches at Buffalo, Akron, Ohio, Toledo and EMU, which is nearly half the league.

Throw in Whitford at Ball State and Senderoff at Kent State as two more coaches with 8-plus years experience and I certainly think it's time for all these guys to step up and play HIGHLY competitive non-league schedules.

None of these guys are on the proverbial hot seat. Only Heath is rebuilding; UB and UT are reloading, Akron-BG-Kent are retooling. Time for this group to collectively step up.

Thoughts.

I agree 100%. Stop playing cream puffs and low level D1 games just to get a home game. Go play higher level teams, even if it’s on the road and build up a true SOS. Get OOC wins that mean something.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. BG doesn’t need to retool or reload. We have a monster in the chamber already: Dylan “Who Needs Hops” Swingle! Swingle is gonna go polylindgual on the league when we commingle. Solid 8 minutes per game, Swindle will make you tingle.

Whitford has had 8 years and his teams aren't very good. They are better off playing their normal schedule and racking up meaningless wins.

Curious as to why you classify Ohio as having a veteran coach. They are more an example of taking the right guy who had never been a head coach before. I do think that OU is stepping up, hope they can schedule and win a few big nonleague games this year.

Boals was HC at Stony Brook for three years before going to Ohio U.

Also had 21 years as a college assistant before Stony Brook. He's very much a veteran.

Another MAC plus ... much like around 2000s in the MAC, the league has 'MAC coaches' ... multiple guys who have played and/or coached and many both in the league; Groce at Akron, Whitford at Ball State, Huger at Bowling Green, Heath at Eastern Michigan, Senderoff at Kent, Boals at Ohio, the coach at Western ... TK at Toledo has earned his MAC stripes, meaning the only MAC 'outsiders' are the new guy at NIU, Owens at Miami and the head coach at UB.

This is about to be a nut-cutting league again and I'm looking forward to it.

Maybe Heath will decide that EMU doesn't need to play 4 Non-D1 teams EVERY year, and play a real non-conference schedule.

RE: A LEAGUE OF COACHES ...
the better mac teams have a little bit more scheduling leverage with the quad system. a road game last year against ohio or toledo would have been a quad 1 game and against akron, kent, buffalo and (marginally) BG would have been quad 2. neutral court games against all those teams other than BG would have been quad 2. meanwhile, playing mac teams at home is way less risky in terms of a loss but rarely helps at all with at large hopes or seeding. there was a time when the big programs chose to play periodic regional road games against mac type schools to boost their profile and reach out to alumni in those areas. lots of OSU fans in toledo, for example.

also, it's not just about playing P5 programs. playing more games against solid A10, AAC, Valley, MWC, WCC, CUSA, SoCon and OVC teams makes equal sense and is more likely to result in home-n-home series. A strong MAC program playing say @ Duquense, Richmond, @ Memphis, East Carolina, @ Pepperdine, Colorado St, @ Drake, Indiana St, @ Old Dominion, Marshall, @Winthrop, Belmont would have a better ranking and more chances for quality wins than a typical schedule with maybe a few teams like that, 1 or 2 money games at MSU/Syracuse, and the rest weak low major, D2 and Horizon bottom feeders. MAC averages as the 11th best conference in the nation. Most of the OCC games should be against leagues ranked 8-14 or top teams from slightly weaker leagues. MAC teams should also front load their schedule with P5 type teams as those are becoming more dependent on transfers and tend to have more talent but less stability than MAC teams. Easier to knock off those teams in the first couple weeks of the season than once they've had time to figure out some chemistry.

we can hope. Murphy always made excuses about "having" to play those games. If we keep scheduling 3-4 non-D1 teams, then i'll send Murphy an apology. but in my fantasy Stan Heath world, those games are a thing of the past.

Aaron, it, like everything else in the world, comes down to money. Money talks, and bull walks...

We will have a new coach but our athletic department didn't win the lottery in the last week.

We will still have problems with a good schedule, as we do in FB.

That’s what I don’t get. Those low level home opponents are buy games. If money is especially the issue, why spend money on games that help you in no way, rather than get paid to play good teams? Or at the very worst, get home and home with MAC+ level teams.

RE: A LEAGUE OF COACHES ...
I was under the impression the MAC requires 15 home games. With our new 22 game MAC schedule, that's 11 so we each need 4 more home games. Generally speaking we plan to play 31 games so that leaves us with 4/9 home OOC games for next year.

Did I dream up this requirement or is it some gnarledge I picked up from the internet? If true, perhaps the MAC could back off a little.

Here are Whitford's numbers. Credit to Reevo on the Ball State board.

Years 1 & 2 = 12-48 (4-32 MAC)
Years 3,4,5 = 61-40 (31-23 MAC)
Years 6,7,8 = 44-43 (25-28 MAC)

Overall = 117-131 (60-83 MAC)

MAC Tourney = 2-7
CIT = 2-2

Who is super impressed?

Agree! The MAC West especially had become an old boys network of long tenured coaches on a "coast" mode. Murphy had an auto extension year of his contract if he had a twenty win season, thus he whined when EMU scheduled Duke, Kansas and Rutgers one season, he preferred D2 home games that got him to that 20 figure.

The antiquated two-division setup allowed this. Monty, Keno, Murphy and Whitford all got to hang Division Championship banners with some less than dominant 10-8 or 11-7 conference records. Add in nine or ten OOC games with D2 opponents and you indeed have a resume' season that would indicate that you are successful to most uniformed observers and you get to "keep on keeping on" and coasting. Nate Oats saw this underachievement and rocked the MAC world. Boals may be on track to do the same.

While you need a few home wins against glorified HS teams, the MAC needs to schedule more Power 6 opponents for sure. Not only do you get on National TV, but your weaknesses are exposed and an upset gives the conference actual credibility.

I agree and disagree with what some of what Jerry says.

Whether Murphy desired non-D-I games is debatable. EMU lacked the money to buy D-I home games and had to supplement the MAC home games with bus ride opponents plus a few home and homes such as UDM and Oakland of the Horizon League.

As a learned folks might say 'attribution' (or assumptions) makes a*s out of you and me.

EMU has had to lose high profile home FB games also because of $. We lost MSU and had to postpone San Diego State for a number of year.

RE: A LEAGUE OF COACHES ...
EMU just needs to schedule a few money games and some mid to low major home and home series. That will balance out the budget and give them enough home games. With the 20 game MAC schedule it looks something like this

@Purdue, @ Butler, @ Depaul (all inexpensive bus trips for a nice check)
@IUPUI, @Detroit @ Robert Morris @ Georgia St (return home games next year, bus or easy short flights)
Home vs Oakland, E. Illinois, Boston U, Lasalle (return away games, bus or easy short flight)

To me, this is really the MAC model for programs w little leverage. For stronger MAC programs or ones w more budget your home-n-homes include a few mid majors from stronger Valley/MWC/A10/AAC schools, maybe you buy a game or 2 against a D1 low major and you maybe play in a 3 game tournament.
