Yeesh, such a long time to wait still. When Heath was first hired, we were lamenting all the losses to the transfer portal. Current makeup seems like a major upgrade (except losing Groce, who probably would have been best on roster still had he stayed).

Groce Morgan and Montero were most of the team's offense as bad as it was last year. Replacing that will be a challenge. Hopefully the new players play defense better no matter what the defensive system.

In conference play last season, off EMU averaged only 67.4 ppg, shot only 46.9 percent on two’s, 31.3 percent on three’s, made few three’s per game, and averaged taking only 16 free-throws per game. Believe that this season, EMU has overall better players who are capable of shooting far better, and who can get to the foul line more often.

EMU poor three shooting was due to EMU having only three decent three point shooters. This up-coming season, EMU will have 9 players capable of shooting three’s at a decent rate. EMU also has more players who are capable of scoring at the rim, and at the foul-line.

Do want to see if EMU will again commit fewer turnovers than opponents did. As having a positive turnover differential plays a big part in determining the outcome of games. Same for the foul-differential.

EMU should have a far better defense than they had last season. As with EMU playing a man to man defense, no way are conference opponents going to shoot anywhere near 38.9 percent on three’s nor anywhere near 58.9 percent on two’s. As EMU has far better new interior defenders.

Projections are often speculation with numbers attached. But why don't you give us the nine players who think can shot three at the Div I level at a decent rate and their 3 point percentages last year in college?

My main point is that overall EMU will have better players both on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.

I said that EMU will have nine decent three-point shooters who are “capable” of shooting three’s at a decent rate. I was not making any
“projections.” The nine players are Rice, Binelli, Scott, McBride, Noah F., Golson, Jihad, Luca S, and Clements, the later two haven’t played college ball as yet.

It’s my view that all of these players are capable of shooting far higher than the 31 percent EMU shot on three’s in conference games last season.

For example, Rice shot 37.5 percent on three’s, Scott shot 35.4 percent on 3’s in conference play, McBride shot 34 percent on three’s, Noah F. shot 33 percent on three’s, Golson shot 37.5 percent on three’s, Jihad shot 42 percent on three’s (3-7).

Luca S.and Clements have not played college ball. I have seen videos of each shooting. Luka has a nice stroke, and though Clements shooting form is a little unique, he’s capable of putting the ball in the hoop.

Binelli’s three-point shooting was at 31 percent two year’s ago, but like most good three-point shooters he made the mistake of having 3 games games in which he continued to jack-up three’s in a game when he was off. As he shot 1-10,1-10, and 0-9 in those three games. He would have shot over 35 percent on 3’s if had not shot so many three’s. If all three point shooters would police themselves and implement some restraints, they wouldn’t have such games.

For example, Scott would have shot 42.5 percent on three’s if he had not taken excessive three’s in 2 of the 14 conference games he played in. McBride would have been above 38 percent, if he didn’t have games in which he shot 0-6, 1-7 on three’s. Rice and Binelli, both high volume three points shooters would have shot three’s at a much higher rate as well if they police themselves.

Hopefully, EMU players will shot some restraint this season.

Very small sample sizes don't you think? And while I like Rice lets be clear it was at a Div 2 JUCO not D1. There is a difference. What would help the 3 point shooting is a real offensive scheme and better play at PG. And while I believe McBride and Binelli will improve under Heath I'm not sold it will be 360% improvement.

RE: 2021/2 EMU MBB Roster
Borrowed this from Toledo board:

As for the MAC there's a decent chance the league breaks the 1 bid drought next season. History says I'm wrong but the odds and rosters suggest maybe not. All the other leagues ranked around the MAC level have had multiple bids since the MAC last got one, so the math will even out eventually. Because of COVID rules and the portal most MAC teams have improved rosters. A few dramatically so. The league could avoid those sub 200 ranked bottom feeders that kill your computer rankings and stand out as bad losses this season. NIU, WMU, CMU, EMU all upgraded their talent level, primarily with guys who have at least a year of college experience and should be ready to contribute. Huger used the COVID scholarship exemptions to load up on veteran transfers and has 15 guys on the roster (not counting walk-ons). Perhaps, the deepest MAC team in memory with 5 guards with mid major starting experience plus Fulcher who made the MAC all-freshman team. Then, they got Plowden and Diggs back for an extra year, a good PF transfer, size off the bench, and the ability to play different lineups and styles. They could win a lot non-conf and have an at-large shot. Kent, OU, Akron, Miami, Buffalo, Ball St all should be solid with one or two of them probably finding the chemistry to be good. UB brings back everyone but Graves (who had a disappointing Sr year) and adds 2 outside shooters who are both physically strong and 4th/5th year college guys to address their primary weakness last season-consistent 3 point shooting. There's also signs that the league is scheduling up with partial non-conf schedules showing more games against P6 and top mid major leagues.

After two years at Oakland, he’s still only 18-years old and won’t turn 19 till next month as he skipped a grade or two in grade school. Has looked very good in practices.

I certainly hope so because our front court will face some more experienced front court players in conference next season. For example CMU just added 6'10 240 pound Harrison Henderson from Southern a redshirt senior. Nije and Randle 6'10 200 if he ever signs and begins practicing with the team may have a rough learning curve against stronger and more experienced centers. And this isn't just limited to centers, ditto forwards as well. I like Heath's "long view" vs one and done.

The small sample size was last season with EMU having few decent three-point shooters and no decent high volume three-point shooters.

As for Rice, he’s a terrific three-point shooter, and can shoot them from deep. He’s likely to get separation wherever he plays. Still need to see his skill-set in other areas.

McBride’s shooting was good last season. He also rarely turned the ball over.

The entire team’s defense was sub-par.

There should be good competition at every position.

I see the competition playing center as btw Njie and Okongo.

RE: 2021/2 EMU MBB Roster
I don’t see Okongo playing much next year. Ballard (a former walk-on) and Groce (talented, but not a natural center) both outcompeted Okongo for minutes at center spot last year. I imagine with Njie, Jihad, and Randle joining Ballard, it will be tougher for Okongo. But as the only 7-footer and a “last chance” motivation, he may surprise us… Regardless, ‘79 raises a good point. Although EMU’s new core of centers appear talented, they are very, very inexperienced. This will definitely be the teams weak spot.

I have no doubt Rice will be a solid 3 point shooter with EMU- regardless of having only played D2 JUCO. And Luka for that matter as well. Conversely, I have a lot of doubts that Clements will be able to improve EMU’s 3 point shooting, at least in his first year. You never know though.

RE: 2021/2 EMU MBB Roster
I see very few Centers nor bigs for that matter guard inside correctly.

Centers and bigs must learn that their main goal is to force opponents to take a bad shot, and when they accomplished that, to realize there’s no need to foul. But most Centers are like rarely taught that, and don’t think in such terms.

For example, if a defender has his hand up, and offensive player has the ball in shooting pocket and then is forced to bring the ball down, and then up again, the defender has done his job. No reason to foul.

Most Centers believe that they should stop their opponent from scoring even though they have forced opponent to take a bad shot, they will bring their hand down and foul the shooter. Result is a two foul-shots on shots that had little chance of going in the hoop.

An interior defender should try to get opponent to shooter further away from the rim, and before the shooter brings to ball up, have his forearm up between the opponents eyes from two feet away, so that shooter does not see the rim. If so. the brain can’t make calculations as to location and distance of the shot, and the shooter will shoot a low percentage. No reason to foul the shooter in the act of shooting.

That’s how guards should also defend three point shooters. That’s how Durant guards Harden on the perimeter. Buards mostly defend with arms pointing out, leaves me shaking my head.

If EMU bigs force opponents to shoot two-point jump shots without fouling, EMU should do well. By reaching in and fouling often proves costly as it leads to excessive fouling, and allows opponent players to shoot one and one’s from the foul-line.

Fouling shooters the worse of all fouls.

Also, Centers need to learn to give way and realize that they must try to defend and protect the crease area by the rim where bigs want to release the ball.

Centers need to move quickly so they can provide weak side help.

The above is my view of defending shooters.

Henderson has played but one year with any significant playing time.

yeah, but his 1 good season was last year. kid averaged 20 pts 16 reb per 40 minutes. big but softly built guy who has some skill and experience. who knows what shows up at CMU. They got a well recruited 2nd year kid in Polk who was great at times as freshman, but missed half the season. A pretty well recruited 3rd year local kid who hasnʻt done much so far. a 5th year ex-UMass multi-transfer guy who hasnʻt done a lot. A 4th year D1 low-major Euro kid who started and had efficient offensive numbers. And now this Henderson kid who is like 32 and playing for his 7th D1 university. All are about 6-10. I donʻt know who starts or how it works but Barbee is clearly loading up on size and giving himself the option to play over MAC opponents who like to go small and bang with Ohio and anyone else who wants to play big.

In conference play at Southern, the Head Coach played Henderson but 20.4 mpg and he averaged 9.6 ppg. He made only half his fga’s attempts in 6 of the 19 games he played in, and was slightly excessive in committing turnovers and fouling. He was a good rebounder and rim protector.

Polk is better offensively than Henderson, but not anywhere not good defensively. He also committed excessive fouls. He averaged 8 ppg.

Both Henderson and Polk will be serviceable for CMU.

Suspect that EMU’s Centers Njie and Jihad are terrific dunkers and that Heath will run timing plays that will get them open looks for dunks. It’s unknown how many points will produce. Jihad can also hit the three-ball.

Expect both to start off in the high post which will open the paint for cutters and drives to the hoop.

How good they are on defense remains to be seen.

freshman usually suck at defense and since neither Jihad or Njie are known for offense that suggests it will be a year or two before they are fully useful. Both are worth the shot though. Not a lot of athletic big guys to choose from.

never seen a MAC team with 5 guys 6-10 though, so CMU will be interesting.

I wouldn't say Ohio plays 'big' ... but I would say Ohio plays 'long.' Starting center is only 6-8ish and plays below the rim. A quality banger, but can be defended. Strength is with 6-4, 6-6 and 6- perimeter players and JP who was also 6-4. JP is gone now and while they have a quality replacement, I still say Ohio is more 'long' than big. I'd say UB is more 'big' but even there the argument can be made the Bulls are more 'long' than big.

As mentioned, CMU might be as big or bigger than any other team in the MAC this season.

Just sayin....

never seen a MAC team with 5 guys 6-10 though, so CMU will be interesting.

Hm it appears that CMU has an excellent chance to lead the MAC in blocked shots next year vs EMU as some here have predicted.

I see the competition playing the Center position between Nije, Jihad, and Okongo. Jihad looks taller than his listed 6’8.” Still need to see if they can defend the rim. Crucial since the NAC is a high-scoring conference.

Who’s the quality replacement for JP?

Ditto ... different from JPreston, but still very good. Can't find the article right now but already picked by some as breakout player in the league this year.

Although Sears has a different skill set than J. Preston (Sears won’t avg. 7 assists per game as Preston did). I agree that Sears will be a good replacement for J.Preston.

But who’s going to replace Sears minutes? It’s not likely Ohio will have a a guard who will contribute as much as Sears did last season. As Ohio has no player on the roster returning who has the potential to match Sears offense nor has Ohio even recruited a transfer or freshman guard to play this season.

Ohio had a good conference record at 9-5 record, but it’s positive scoring margin was small at 2.6 ppg (Ohio avg. 78.6 ppg and gave-up 76 ppg) in conference play. This was mainly due to it’s defense not being very good. Preston was a better defender than Sears as Ohio gave up 107.4 points per 100 possessions when Sears played, and only 104.4 points per 100 possessions.

Even though Ohio has recruited three PF’s, don’t see Ohio being a better defensive team this up-coming season.

According to verbal commits James Love III is transferring. I thought he announced after last season he was leaving. Don't know if Noah Morgan or Miles Gibson found a new home.

Love was previously listed as “left the team” on Verbal Commits. Today it changed to “Transferred”. I take this to mean when he previously left the team he was done with basketball, but recently had a change of heart.

I had reviewed Verval Committs on EMU players from last year and Montero was listed as “going pro”, Groce was “Committed” to Butler, Love listed as mentioned above, Pacheo as “left the team”. Lowder, James, Gibson, and Noah are all listed as “Transferred” still, so I imagine they have not found a new home yet.

I was disappointed to lose both Lowder and James, but clearly EMU has since restocked at guard so I don’t see a need for their return. Especially as a return would lock up future scholarships for another couple years.

CONVERSELY, Noah or Gibson would be ideal to return if so inclined. Both can play Small Forward which EMU does not really have. Plus, they won’t eat up a scholarship for future recruits/offers. (EDIT: Which I think might have been your point?)

RE: 2021/2 EMU MBB Roster
In conference play last season, EMU averaged 67.4 ppg and opponents averaged 80 ppg. New EMU Head Coach Stan Heath needed to upgrade the roster, and it appears he has rather quickly. Now we have to wait and see if EMU’s offense will score more points than it’s opponents do.
