RE: 2021/2 EMU MBB Roster
Three Man Weave ( TMW) has ranked Buffalo and Ohio finishing 1-2 in the top tier, in the 12-team MAC, and ranks in the following order Bowling Green, Toledo, Kent State, Akron, and Miami of Ohio, in the second tier.

It ranks Ball State at no.8 in the third tier, with EMU right behind finishing at number 9. They don’t say EMU will not finish in the top half of the MAC.

TMW also places three Buffalo players on the MAC’s first all-star team.

TMW has lost their mind listing Kent State’s newcomer 6’1” PG Sincere Carry to the MAC’s third All-Star team. He shot 25 percent on two’s and 27 percent on three’s in conference play at Duquesne last season. Enough said.

TMW loves the hiring of Stan Heath as EMU’s HC.

It also has high praise for EMU players McBride, M. Scott, Rice, Farrakhan. Golson, and Njie. Such is consistent with what observers have seen at EMU’s practices.

TMW says that transfer Monty Scott’s is EMU’s big addition, that he played well at other schools, and “he makes scoring effortless and easy.” They point-out that he has not played on winning teams. This season he will be playing with a plethora of good scorers that he hasn’t played with before, and that should make a difference. Monty Scott is listed as one of the MAC’s top 5 newcomers.

I believe that if EMU learns to play in sync it’s capable of finishing toward the Upper half of the MAC. .

Do think Buffalo has the most talent. Is a running team that scored 50 percent of it’s shots at the rim. Unanswered is whether EMU can get back in transition and whether EMU’s good interior defenders Nije and Okongo can deny Buffalo at the rim in half-court offensive sets.

TMW ranking Kent State 5th makes little sense as KSU lost both Pippin and Nuga who combined for 39 of KS’s 76 ppg. KSU signed a transfer SG from Georgia to replace Nuga who is simply not that good. Temple should be better than KSU.

TMW’s 9th place conference rank of EMU is off as it has McBride starting at PG, and Binelli and Ballard competing for starting as PF. Observers believe that Farrakhan will be starting at PG, and Golson at PF. EMU probably also rated 9th because EMU is a reconstituted team and iwill have 4 or 5 new starters.

Still looking forward to learning more about EMU’s open practice.

There’s also real competition as to whether McBride or Spottsville starts at one wing. Heath will have to chose between McBride’s offense or Spottsville’s defense.

Gotta watch the guys play Miggy, can't just go by percentages with college kids. Spencer Littleson was an 11% 3 pt shooter as a Duquense freshman without a clear role. After a transfer and rs year at Toledo to gain confidence and tighten his shooting mechanics he became one of the best 3 pt shooters in college basketball. Sincere Carey was a borderline all A10 player at Duquense before a muddled partial final season. He's a really good defender and competitor. So, even though he's not a great shooter he can be a very solid MAC pg. Meanwhile, Danny Pippen had some monster games over the years for Kent. He also took a ton of shots and had no problem winning or losing games on his own. It became an issue at times and he's reported to have thrown punches at teammates, including an incident that had him kicked off the the team last year at tournament time. He also had 2 bum knees and didn't practice much. So, yeah, he put up numbers but Kent should have more chemistry without him. Garcia is a big versatile guy who has experience being a mid major go to player and SEC role player. He's a good fit for that team. In fact you could make a case for Kent being the sleeper pick to win the MAC as they could be the league's best defensive team and could start a unit with an average of over 4 years of college basketball experience. Their Vandy transfer C should be the most athletic true big in the MAC and he will probably come off the bench.

TMW ranking Kent State 5th makes little sense as KSU lost both Pippin and Nuga who combined for 39 Of KSU’s 76 ppg. Doesn’t have enough returning players to match Nuga’s high volume excellent three point shooting.

KSU shot 32. 1 percent on three’s in conference play last season. See that going down having lost Nuga’s 41.7 percent shooting on three’s in conference play.

TMW 9th place rank of EMU is off as TMW has McBride starting at PG and Binelli and Ballard competing for starting as PF. Observers believe that Farrakhan will be starting at PG, and Golson at PF.

Pono: I do put a lot of weight in offensive stats, non-shooting stats, and advance stats. When stats speak, we should listen. It’s my opinion, the eye test plays a lesser role. For a player who one season shoots poorly, and next season shoots well, that will show up in his stats, and the eye test will also confirm his stats for each year.

On the other hand, sometimes both the player’s stats and the eye test deceive an observer, as the player is playing in a bad offensive and/or defensive system, that highlights the players weaknesses or hides his strengths.

Other times, a player looks like a bad shooter, when in fact, the player has gotten into a bad shooting habit that makes it look he can’t shoot well, when a simple adjustment will fix it.

Kent State may have more chemistry without Pippin, but they won’t replace his production. Kent State has no one who will replace Pippin’s 19 ppg, and his leading KSU with 9.3 rebounds conference game, including 2.9 offensive rebounds per game, 1.3 blocked shots per conference game, and 5.2 FTA’s per game. Those numbers not going to be replaced.

KSU will also miss sharp shooting SG Nuga, who shot two’s at an astounding 61 percent, and was an excellent high volume three point shooter at 41.7 percent He also averaged 17 ppg.

KSU will also turn the ball over more this season, and will not be able to score as well at the hoop, especially against a team like KSU’s.

KSU ‘s Georgia transfer Garcia is a decent player and is good on the offensive boards. He shoots but 27 percent on 2-point jumpers. He’s being but 6’6 “ and playing playing upfront leads me to believe he’s going to have trouble scoring against EMU’s front line. He didn’t shoot three’s last season.

KSU is not going to be able to rely on returning player SG Santiago and PG Jacob’s, filling the scoring void left by Nuga’s departure. Jacob’s is not a good three point shooter (28 percent).

KSU had one SG in Santiago. But Santiago is only an excellent 3-point shooter, as he shot only 40 percent at the rim, and a woeful 23 percent on 2-point jump shots. Stop his three-ball and he had no offense.

EMU will have a far stronger backcourt than KSU will have.

Nuga was a low turnover player, and KSU’s roster is now filled with both returning and in-coming players with high turnover rates. Returning backcourt players Santiago and Jacob’s both have high turnover rates, so do incoming transfers Carry and the Vanderbilt transfer.

Transfer PG Sincere Carry played in just 5 games at Duquesne last season and then transferred to KSU. Whether he shot poorly because he was leaving is not known. His stats from two years ago reflect he scored at the rim well and shot three’s at 33 percent. He a did make steals and assists at a decent rate, but committed turnovers at a high rate as well, and that’s somewhat concerning. He shot 2-point jumpers at only 27 percent.

When Carry played in the prior season, Duquesne scored 105 points and gave up 106 points per 100 possessions. Don’t see him as being a particularly good defender given the number of points scored by opponents when he played. If that happens this season, it would be hard to say he’s an all-star caliber player.

KSU does have some good returning bigs in Hamilton and Beck, but Beck also has a high turnover rate. Beck is a good three-point shooter, but shot few last season.

6’7” Rhode Island transfer D Johnson will help, and although a good three-point shooter, don’t see him playing nor shooting that much.

KSU is a good defensive team inside, but not on the perimeter, as conference opponents shot 35.3 percent on three’s.

Don’t see the in-coming transfer Vanderbilt center Odusipe as being good. Although a small sample, he shot just 40 percent on 2’s during the 46 minutes he played in 11 games last season. He also committed turnovers and fouls at a high rate. Defensively, he had a low-rating as opponent teams scored 112 points per 100 possessions when he played.

KSU will likely not have the firepower to again average 76 ppg in conference play, and even though they have a few decent shooters, I believe KSU’s propensity to turn the ball over will prevent them from challenging for the MAC title. I see them taking a step backwards this season. But we’ll get to see.

Farrakhan, M. Scott, , Golson, and Njie should be EMU’s best scorers.

With McBride, BeNilli, Rice coming off the bench, EMU’s offensive firepower should continue. Also, look for N.Scott, Okongo, and Ballard to be effective coming off the bench.

Thanks for alerting us to the TMW write up- pretty thorough for a free publication.

Here is the link if anyone wants to read more than just Miggy’s “unbiased” summary (kidding with you, Miggy)

RE: 2021/2 EMU MBB Roster
EMU men’s basketball is paying the price in pre-season rankings for having such a dismal record last season. CBS Sports in compiling it’s pre-season rankings has given no consideration to the good new players who have joined the EMU men’s bb program, especially, Farrakhan,Njie, Golson, and Rice.

The ranking services haven’t seen EMU either play together nor against other opponents. As such, they have no basis for their rankings or their comments on EMU’s team. Ranking services are undervaluating EMU’s players on both sides of the ball.

CBS Sports national men’s bb rankings has EMU ranked 335 out of 350 teams in the nation, and calls EMU “clearly the worse team in the MAC.” CBS has Northern Illinois ranked 217th in the nation, a team both Three Man Weave and Bart Torvik rated NI last in the MAC, three slots below EMU.

ESPN hasEMU ranked 307th in the nation.

Pomeroy rates EMU at 297 in the nation, as rates both it’s offense and defense almost even.

Bart Torvik now has EMU ranked 284 in the nation moving up from 2&8. He sill omits Njie and Randle from being on EMU’s roster.

Sports Illustrated has EMU ranks EMU 281 in the nation, and finishing 11th in the conference. Simply nuts pre-season ratings.

EMU’s best ranking is Massey’s which ranks EMU 248 in the country, another rating service has EMU rated 247. Massey lists Eastern Michigan as the 10th best team.

Three Man Weave ranks EMU as the MAC’s 9th best team.

Most ranking services like Bart Torvik rank EMU’s defense better than their offense. We’ll see if the proves true. Once again, that seems based on EMU’s performance last season. Believe EMU’s offense and defense will be quite good.

EMU plays Oakland in an exhibition game on October 28th. CBS Sports ranks Oakland 235th in the nation. Pomeroy ranks Oakland at 194.Massey ranks Oakland 204 in the nation, and Oakland’s offense as 111th. One can see why Oakland is no pushover having averaged 78 ppg last season in the Horizon conference, while opponents averaged 79 ppg.

Oakland has a terrific PG in Jalen Moore returning, and have signed a terrific Marquette transfer SF Jamal Cain. They did lose a good SG, but they had other good SG’s on the roster.

Hopefully, EMU’s new and revamped offense will score in the high 70’s, and it’s defense will hold Oakland to scoring in the low 70’s.

EMU ultimately beat Oakland team by five points 74-69 on Oakland’s home court. So EMU is apparently better than a team that is ranked as high as 194 in the nation. Oakland was short-handed, but it’s two best players shot poorly, and it’s young players shot well replacing their veterans. Also, Njie, EMU’s best Center did not play.

By doing so, EMU has reversed the process that has led to it’s low rankings, and proves their ratings are devoid of reality.

RE: 2021/2 EMU MBB Roster
Bart Torvik national men’s college basketball rankings projects that Noah Farrakhan playing for EMU will average 5 ppg, 2 assists, and 2-rebounds. These projection are based on his limited playing time last season ar ECU.

His projections are way off as in EMU’s Oakland exhibition game Noah scored 27-points, had 6-assists, and 7 -rebounds.

Torvik’s projections were off, in small part, because Noah played slightly more than the 53 percent of the time that Torvik projected. This season he’ll play far more.

But Torvik’s projections are also far off as they were based on a small sample of stats from Noah’s last season stats that were entered into a computer. These stats showed that in playing 112 minutes for ECU, he only took 2 fga’s at the rim and missed both, and shot 53.8 percent (9-17) on 2-point jumpers. Given Farrakhan s outstanding 2-point jumper stats, it’s clear he should have both played far more than he did.

When Torvik entered Noah’s stats into a computer, he did not have knowledge nor did the computer know that Noah since departing ECU has expanded his creativity in driving to the hoop that allowed him to get closer open shots near the hoop, and by now doing so, has markedly increased his scoring.

He also also garnered more assists than Torvik projected. He did so both because he played slightly more than projected in a better offensive system with better shooters than he did at ECU.

His rebounding has increased also because of his actual playing time and because he’s is making a concerted effort to do so.

In making EMU’s rankings, Torvik does not make any projections for EMU’s projected starting Center, nor for Randle, as Torvik doesn’t even list them as being on EMU’s roster.

Three Man Weave ignores discussing Farrakhan other to say he’s a new EMU transfer newcomer.

Other ranking services. s have also under estimated Farrakhan and other EMU players. It’s why EMU’s pre-season national rankings are both way off and bogus.

EMU will need to show what they can do on the court before EMU moves up in the rankings. Confident EMU will over the course of their 11 non-conference games, 5 of which will be played at home.

Three Man Weave placed Ohio’s PG Mark Sears on the MACs first team all-star team. Do believe there will be stiff competition between Sears and Noah Farrakhan as to who’s the MAC’s best PG. I believe Farrakhan will average more points per game, and make more assists, and garner more rebounds per game than Sears will.

Noah’s is far better than Kent State’s transfer PG Sincere Carry who coaches placed in the MAC’s second team as Carry who mostly shoots two’s shot them at only 39 percent at Duquesne. and hex has a high turnover rate. Carry didn’t play much last season, but did play a lot two season ago. and at that time, he shot but 27 percent on 2-point jump shots. Don’t expect that to improve this season. Assume the MAC coaches voted before Farrakhan played in the Oakland exhibition game.

RE: 2021/2 EMU MBB Roster
Three-man Weave describes Monty Scott as being EMU’s best newcomer and that he has had success at everywhere he’s played. TMW goes on to say he’s a “ball dominant” offensive player who meets the ‘“eye test,” and who not only shoots a lot, but playing for Portland State las season, had the fourth most assists in the Big Sky conference. TMW lists Scott as one of the five best newcomers to join the MAC conference.

EMU fans got to see for themselves Scott’s stellar play in the Oakland game as he scored 16-points shooting 5-9 from the field, 1-3 on three’s, 5-6 from the fouling, garner 6 rebounds, 3-assists, and two steals. He can really fill-up a box score. The only thing he didn’t do was take a lot of shots, as his brother PG Noah Farrakhan was on fire. When he does, both his scoring and taking foul-shots should both increase.

Scott achieved his stats playing only 26 minutes. When he was on the court EMU outscored it’s opponents by 14-points, even though EMU beat Oakland by only 5-points. At no time, was EMU outscored when Scott was on the court an indication that both Scott’s offense and defense was superb.

Scott came into the game with EMU trailing by four points, and when Scott was off the court in the remainder of the game, EMU was outscored by 5-points. While Farrakhan led EMU in scoring, EMU played even better when Scott was on the floor and helped EMU play cohesively.

While Farrakhan scored 27-points during his 30 minutes of playing time, EMU outscored Oakland by only 6-points, one more point than EMU won by. This is an indication that Farrakhan has to work on improving his defense as Oakland was scoring well at the same time as Farrakhan was torching them with his scoring.

Am confident that Scott along with Farrakhan will be among the top scoring guards in the MAC. What separates Scott from some other top guards in the MAC is his ability to get to the foul-line on made and missed shots alike, as he averaged 4.8 foul shots per conference game last season.

For instance, MOH’s Dae Dae Grant, selected by MAC HCs to the MAC’s second team of all-stars, is a good three-point shooter, but only averaged 2-foul shots per game last season.

I’m biased, but I don’t believe there’s a better tandem of guards in the MAC conference, but I’m sure there will be a healthy debate on the both the MAC’s Men’s BB Message Board and here, both now and as the season progresses. At the end of the season, comparing player stats and their team’s success or not success will add to the discussion.

When you add-in Golson, Njie, Binelli, McBride, N.Scott, and other players, EMU looks like a very good team. EMU seems to be clicking early on, just need to see if that continues.
