I was a Bronkema guy, but didn't really know of Stan was an option, so just as thrilled with him! He is also young enough he could be here for a good 10-15 year round.

Good point. Even if he is really successful I don't expect him to run off chasing a HM program.

Could be the type of hire where the guy stays for 10 years.

I think we might have much more than that.

I'm using the 'official' 2021/2 roster from the EMU website.

As I read it, all but one or two scholarship players are 'freebies' - don't count against the 13 NCAA limit because teams can offer athletic scholarships to players who were seniors in 2020/21 which was a good share of our team.

EMU lists SIX redshirt seniors. They don't count against the 13 scholarship limit. IF the NCAA limit is 15 players, I think we could add 7 players. I count 6 non-counters, only 1 who counts (Lowder).

If couldn’t play this year what makes you think they can play next year. I say clean house and start over.07-coffee3
Disagree. You've got to start with something and these guys may perform better with a new system. Besides, running student-athletes away from the program sends a terrible message to potential recruits.

'Nickle, I agree with you. One of the things about Heath is that he is presumably a really good Xs and Os coach.

Let see if he can coach up some of them. Players aren't coming back to lose.

Will they prefer a different defensive scheme? Offensive scheme?

It will be nice to HAVE an offensive scheme.

Agreed. I would love to see Ty come back for one more year.

Is that a possibility? Or wishful thinking?

He hasn’t committed anywhere yet, so maybe it’s a possibility? Probably closer to wishful thinking, but the door is at least open. I’m hoping Heath does what Mike Woodson did at Indiana and make retaining his best player the top priority.

He can hire assistants to hit the road, but Ty Groce is a recruit that the program "Big Dog" needs to handle. Keeping Ty at home should be number 1,2 and 3 on his priority list. Ty wants to play professional basketball, who better relate to those aspirations than a coach from the G League?

RE: OFFICIAL: Stan Heath Hired as MBB Coach
I feel like I am getting ahead of myself, but...

If Heath does an absolutely fantastic job and gets EMU back to the NCAA tourney l in the first or second year, we probably lose him to a High Major right away.

If it is a longer rebuild process, say 4 or 5 or 6 years, then he is in his 60s at that point and might just want to wind down his remaining career at home without starting over ( not completely sure, he may want to build enough bank to pass to his sons).

In any case, Stan Heath WILL get EMU back to the NCAA tourney... I love how he loves EMU!!

I am absolutely giddy. It has been 10 years since we have seen an offensive scheme. Weird!!! (Do you think Coach Heath will throw in the 3 man weave for an occasional mix?)

Stan Heath could have a career in politics. This guy could sell ice to Ice Man.

I have never heard two better speeches at the introduction of a new coach than I did today.

Both AD Wetherbe and HC Heath weaved a beautiful tapestry of what EMU MBB has been and what it could be.

Well done gentlemen!!!

Man, it sounded like he was speaking to me when he talked about running an uptempo offense. I cannot wait to see that.

He will be a great ambassador for the university. You can tell how happy he is to be here.

I agree. Everyone who missed it should go watch the replay. Heath is SERIOUS about winning and filling up the seats.

And he put the onus on himself and the team to get people interested. For those who hated the lack of marketing from Murphy, it was refreshing to hear Stan say that. And how genuine it sounded.

One of the things I liked was that the AD talked with the players and asked THEM what THEY wanted. (hint: the zone defense didn't make it).

Everyone promising up tempo offense, etc. We'll see a lot of NBA stuff coming to EMU.

I was torn between Heath and Eisley. What I liked about both is the NBA experience. Eisley had it in spades, Heath for 4 years through the NBA's G-League.

Heath, of course, is true green which was very important.

I'm thinking of whom does Heath remind me of? I'm thinking Ben Braun.

Both are very articulate, polished, easy relators, etc. The type of professional who can easily be with a regent, president, AD, players, or fans. A gifted professional, not a jock who went into coaching.

Heath is as polished as virtually any D-I HC. Ben Braun was similar in his time.

Man I hope you're correct! Heath sounded super excited to be back at his alma mater! It has been sooooo long to feel and see that type of enthusiasm! He'll recruit well I really do believe..........his assistant coaches is what everyone is curious about..........I bet he lands a big transfer within A week!

One thing about Heath no one has mentioned. He is a very young mid-50s.

Mid-50s is when men decide what they want to be. Some slow down a step or two and give up running, softball, etc. and start to age. Thinking of cookouts and start retiring in their mind.

Others in their mid 50s go out and hoop or run marathons, etc.

Heath looks like he could put on shorts and go out of the court and do drills with the players. He looks very fit.

He seems a very young mid-50s, not gliding toward retirement.

I think we're seeing two types of coaching hires around the country right now:

1) is the young up-and-comer hopefully able to relate to the now revolving door of players annually coming through their programs.

2) is the late-middle aged experienced veteran coach, perhaps with some warts, who still offers a sense of stability to the same revolving door of players.

P5 programs seem for the most part to gravitate to No. 1 - not all but most. MM programs seem to gravitate to No. 2 - again, not all, but most.

If, over time, the No. 2s are able to establish an element of stable programs in the MM ranks, then the transfer pool will likely slow down some. If not ... it will be even worse than it is now.

I wanted the basketball CC and we may have gotten him
A coach who is interested in developing the talent they have and, making it better families are a focus character and self discipline are important. I see those values both in Heath and CC.
