FCS Spring 2021 Update: Lots of "opt outs"
Noticed yesterday that 13 FCS games were canceled because schools have opted out of the rest of the spring season. There were 13 such games, IIRC. A couple of them were older, but most were opt-outs that happened in the past week or so.
It's created some absurd situations. For example, the beleaguered MEAC conference is supposed to hold its CCG this coming weekend, on April 17. But as of now, there are only two teams playing in the "Northern" division, Delaware State and Howard, and only one team is playing in the "Southern" division, South Carolina State. And SC State is 2-1, with only one game played vs a MEAC team. They've played more SWAC teams than MEAC teams. Howard, in the north, has only played two games, both against Delaware State.
We saw some of this towards the end of the FBS 2020 Fall season, but not much. Seems like to a certain extent, this FCS Spring season is disintegrating. I haven't kept stats, but just following it, it seems like there have been more cancelations due to virus and opt-outs than we had in the Fall, so IMO the postpone-to-Spring strategy did not pay off.
OTOH, some conferences, like the Southern, Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences, have been able to play six-game seasons basically equal to what the PAC and B1G were able to do in the fall.
That said, I do appreciate the FCS schools that have been playing. For example, Alabama A&M and Jackson State played a very entertaining game on ESPN yesterday, as did Incarnate Word/Northwestern State. It's been nice secondary viewing for me.
