I don't think we have any idea. I think the administration has talked to a bunch of coaches, but they've kept where they are going really quiet. It's pretty impressive how little leaks out

How did Nored's name pop up? Just curious - was it his people or UC people who linked him to the job?

If it's anything like how Martin's name popped up it's not from within the administration. I'd be shocked if it wasn't people in Nored's orbit.

Yes...give us a 31 year old version of Nick Van Exel without the NBA career or program connections.

You wouldn't want a guy whose college coaching history was one season as an assistant to John Brannen?

uhmm, sold? kinda nerdy, but at least he hooped

I like the fact that he is black. I like the fact that he played for a successful program and was a point guard. I like the fact that he played for Stevens and seems to be a real gymn rat from a coaching perspective. He comes off as very down to earth and intelligent. He seems like a defensive guy who could probably draw up some plays.

But we better ask him to submit a resume complete with diagrams for Hemond to review just in case.

If Nored has interviewed with UC, it would be interesting what questions were asked of him about his experiences coaching under John Brannen at NKU--and why he moved on after one season.

From the video posted in this thread he appears to be intelligent, articulate, and well grounded. But wouldn't UC be looking for more college coaching experience than a 31 year old with just a single year in the collegiate ranks?

Is there any chance that some of this interviewing is exploratory for building a coaching staff for a head coach already selected? I know that's usually the purview of the new head coach but who really knows what's gone on in Varsity Village the past two surreal weeks in UC basketball history.

I think just about everything has come from coaches people (regardless of which coach you are talking about). Cunningham has things locked up tight. Apparently Gates does too, which is why nothing has really come out as to our level of interest with him.

In terms of how Nored's name came to Cunningham, Nored was Minnesota's second choice. I assume that got to JC via his connections with Minnesota.

RE: Hiring the next hoops coach
I'm not arguing for or against Nored, but just FYI, that video is about 4 years old, so he was only 27 at the time and already very impressive/mature for a coach that young. I would feel a lot better though if one of his G-League stints was swapped with a couple years of high-major assistant experience. I would consider him a 1a or 1b type of guy with that experience. The guy definitely has star potential though. I do like that our AD seems to be thinking outside the box, doing due diligence on candidates with varying backgrounds, and casting a wide net.

Anyone who has watched any G-League knows there is very little coaching being done...I would love if he has front of bench coaching experience in a sports league that doesn't just turn into adult AAU ball.

FWIW Nored's record as HC of the G League Long Island Nets from 2016-18 was 44-56.

Jon Rothstein just reported UNC-Greensboro's Wes Miller has emerged as a serious candidate for the UC job. He also said OSU assistant Ryan Pedon is another primary candidate.

Glad to see we're conducting a real and thorough search more in line with what we did with Fickell than with Brannen / tuberville. BTW I liked both those hires at the time, but it was very clear we didn't cast a wide net or talk to a bunch of coaches.

I wouldn't touch Wes Miller with a 30 foot pole. He has not spent one second recruiting at the high major level.

RE: Hiring the next hoops coach
Glad to hear the AD is taking my recommendation to interview!!! LOL. I thought maybe because he's not of midwestern roots or doesn't have coaching/recruiting ties in that region may keep him off the interview list. Definitely my choice as a finalist. He's been a consistent winner at UNCG with limited resources. Plus, he's only 38.

That's interesting.

I've got family members who are huge Butler fans. They say Nored is "phenomenal." They're not surprised at all that he's getting high-major feelers for jobs.

Well, if nothing else, this search keeps UC basketball top of mind among the local media well into April. We'll enjoy more exposure as long as the beauty pageant continues...

I don't suppose UC is a high major program anymore. Salary range that is rumored to have been discussed with Martin is 1.1 to 1.5, which is about a million short of where the salary needs to be. These candidates are nobody that any "other" high major program would consider. Archie Miller? Bryce Drew? Frank Martin? The top assistant at Baylor, whatever his name is? If you are a serious Bearcat fan and thought you'd be cheering on a squad led by one of those guys this fall, it looks like the joke is going to be on you.

Minnesota just hired a Xavier assistant coach as their head coach.
UNC just hired their own assistant coach.
Boston College just hired the head coach from College of Charleston
Depaul just hired an assistant from Oregon
Iowa State just hired a coach who was 29-30 at UNLV
Texas Tech just hired their own assistnat coach.
Utah Just hired the Utah State head coach.

The elite programs can often pull from a different pool of candidates but UC's candidates are absolutely in line with where most high majors look.

Are you surprised by this? I think we've know the salary range and candidates from the beginning without p5 fball money, and a 3.5mm fball coach. Fwiw, i'd take Wes Miller over Archie or Martin any day. Drew i would have to think about as i like him, but do not think he's ever been interested in the job. There are quite a few UNC fans who would have preferred Wes Miller over Davis. Just check their boards. I'm still not convinced of E. Martin's recruiting chops away from Huggs, and we realize he has zero head coaching experience. Pedon has been linked to quite a few of Osu's bigger recruits, and we know he's recruited in our markets at his previous stops.
