More than decent: San Antonio is the 2nd largest city in Texas and 7th largest in the nation. It's likely to pass Philadelphia in the final 2020 census for 6th.

Highly unlikely. Been discussed in every other WAC expansion thread.

It is considered a good school for Catholics in South Texas. Quite a few of the students come from the suburbs. It is an attractive campus in a very prestigious part of town. The WAC could do worse.

Amarillo, while physically isolated, has decent enough air service, though Delta has discontinued service for the time being. If/when they add SLC back, it'll be that much better for the WAC. But between Southwest, American, and United, no WAC school is more than a one-stop flight to Amarillo.
UIW has a major airport literally 8-10 mins away.

There are other Catholic universities in Texas. There are, for example, three of note that I can name off the top of my head: St. Thomas in Houston, St. Edwards in Austin, University of Dallas (self-explanatory). There's also Lady of the Lake, which is also in San Antonio.

24 hours until the Matt Brown update. Guessing I’m not the only one who’s set an alert on my phone.

Matt’s a smart guy and puts out good stuff. I for one am looking forward to what he has to say on the topic.

If UIW wants to be THE Texas Catholic University, maybe they need to change their name.

Then again, some place in Fort Worth is already using the initials TCU.

Maybe something like "Catholic UNiversity of Texas"?

You are going by "city populations" as opposed to "metropolitan statistical area (MSA) populations." With the latter — which provides a more true take — Philly dwarfs San Antonio.

I still see a big no that Incarnate Word gets an invite.

Even better is Urbanized Area populations, since some MSA boundaries are a bit more expansive than others, but it makes the same point, from the 2010 census: DFW 5.1m, Houston 4.9m, 6th and 7th largest urban areas in the country respectively, nestled between Philadelphia and DC ... San Antonio 1.8m, 26th in the country, nestled between Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

San Antonio seems like it is going to climb the rankings when the figures come out from the new census (you need census numbers to get an urban area because it allows you to find out population densities) ... but it's not going to climb into the top 10.

Few things are more misleading than city population as the indicator of the size of a metro area, the real measure of population.

Going by city population, Charlotte is larger than Atlanta, San Francisco, Washington, and Boston. Heck, Fresno, CA is larger than Atlanta.

Philadelphia metro is 8th in the nation. San Antonio is 24th.

I realize this has nothing to do with sports. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

In some cases, I believe that a CSA(combined statistical area) is more accurate than city or metro population. To me, Baltimore is to Washington, DC what Fort Worth is to Dallas or what St. Paul is to Minneapolis. But metro areas treat Baltimore as its own metro, not as a part of Bal-Wash, which does show up in CSAs.

As promised, Matt Brown delivers on WAC expansion and confirms that UIW is being vetted though not a sure thing by any stretch. I’m sure there will be some more fallout and conversation on the WACbbs.

If West Texas is the desired candidate but they are not moving as quickly, then perhaps a hard look at UIW will spur them on

If UIW leaves the Southland, the Southland will all but have to take multiple D2 upgrades

This is what I do not get about WTAMU.

There are going to be D2 upgrades from the Lonestar Conference whether they be to the WAC, Southland or both.

WTAMU has got to realize that some of the like-minded public schools from the state of Texas in the LSC are going to be hard pressed not to take advantage of this opportunity and WTAMU will not want to be left behind with what remains.

Right—unless all the lone star schools make a pact to stay put, there is going to be movement.

If anything, the bigger lone star schools need to be in open communication with each other regarding who plans on doing what.

Or, it may be better for Division II to expand from Division I schools...
