Another fire JJ thread
Watching Gonzaga who was nothing when odu made their first few tournaments, oral roberts, loyola and all the schools that were equal or below odu back in the 70s,80s,90s,and even into the 2000s go into deep runs,I wonder what happened to us! We were in 2 different conferences(sun belt and colonial) where we had chances at multiple bids. Now we are in a non-exciting low level basketball conference. I remember them getting multiple bids when Memphis was in cusa. I feel that we used to get good recruting classes in the past and worked them into really good players. I understand why we went to cusa for football but we need to stop settling for mediocrity, recruit better or get back into a conference with multiple bids. VCU has a decent season, they get invited to the dance. Heck,we don't go to NIT anymore or any other of those mediocre tournaments that we have won. BT was aggressive, PW was great into turning low level recruits into NBA level talent. We did not settle for mediocrity with TY and JC,why are we settling now? I feel like we are being passed by. This is freaking ODU,which was once a school people did not want to play. We lost to Bobby Knight and Indiana by 1 point as a division 2 school and used to regularly beat georgetown, syracuse and a lot of highly ranked and thought of teams and we used to stand toe to toe with uva and VT in basketball and were VCUs equal or better. I remember sold out games at scope and the ted. I know we can't have crowds right now but attendance was dwindling before this. Mr. Selig and coach Jones please bring our ODU basketball back to where it belongs. This is heartbreaking to watch.

Sold out games at Scope???? When I was in school you could hear a pin drop at scope. The only games that sold out were UVA and UNC. And again, except for a few years the Colonial was a one bid league and once it got good, everyone bolted for greener pastures. We just selected the wrong farm to graze in.

We went away from “selective excellence” and joined big boy football. It came with a price to our basketball program. It is that simple.

I feel similarly. We needed to go to the A10 10 or 20 years ago. It is gut wrenching watching us get passed by (in several ways). I’m still hoping the Indy football/A10 thing happens, but it seems that chatter has died down and the teams expected to drop out changed their minds.

We could still choose excellence in hoops. The WCC didn’t hold back Gonzaga. We will never be excellent in football. “Good” and a crap bowl is the ceiling. For hoops it could be the final 4 with some vision. But CUSA makes it a lot harder.

Football enhanced interest in basketball. ODU attendance leads the conference. Before we had FB the lament was that basketball season never really started until the Redskins season was over. Our BB is mediocre because of who leads it and the fact his boss is AOK with mediocrity.

Football should not have anything to do with it other than sticking us in a crappy conference. The level of play is way down. We need new blood. If JJ is a bad recruiter or he does not like new players, he will never be able to go with the new era of transfers. If he waits for newcomers to contribute by giving them limited minutes, they will just transfer. Come on,let's not settle.

I don't wholly disagree with you, but JJ has not been coaching for all the year he has becasue he sucks. Recruiting falls mostly to the assistant coaches, and maybe like BW, in football, his commitment to his guys (assistant coaches) rather than bringing in someone new maybe holding us back but who really knows. I figure JJ has one more year then he is either let go or retires. If he brings in a couple of good transfers that have 2 or three years of eligibility left, things could turn around real quickly. And then we will be talking about Maleik Curry like we did about Tre Porter in that he left for greener pastures that were not necessarily greener.

RE: Rant
ODU did have a few high attendance seasons at Scope. The '79-'80 ODU team played at Scope and set an average attendance record of 7,492 that lasted for 32 years ('79-'11) before being broken by Blaine Taylor's '10-'11 team at the Ted.

Paul Webb's '79-'80 team finished 25-5. One of their losses was to a UVA team featuring Ralph Sampson, Jeff Lamp, and a 6'-4" sophomore point guard named Jeff Jones. Another one of their losses that season was to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament. Those of us that have followed ODU since that time will recognize names like Mark West, Ronnie Valentine, Ronnie McAdoo, Tommy Branch, Bobby Vaughan, Grant Robinson, and Billy Mann that played on that ODU team. Mark West was also recruited out of Petersburg High School to play at UVA by coach Terry Holland, but chose to go with Paul Webb and play for ODU instead.

Blaine Taylor's '10-'11 team finished the season with a 27-7 record and it was his last team to go to the NCAA Tournament. They had wins that season over Clemson, Xavier, Richmond, ECU, Dayton, GMU, and VCU (two times). ODU lost in their first game in the NCAA Tournament 60-58 to Butler on a rebound follow shot at the buzzer in a tightly contested game that ODU led 29-27 at halftime. VCU lost to the same Butler team a couple weeks later 70-62 in the Final Four.

It’s going to take a future hall of fame coach willing to stick around for the continuously increasing money we can pay him (Mark Few) as we slowly get richer from the results to overcome our situation. In other words, a new unknown entity combined with dumb luck.

Our best years in fan interest and engagement were the Loughton years, well before football. That’s when there were pregame concerts and lines wrapping around the Ted an hour before the game. Even the ‘10 and ‘11 years with better teams didn’t come close to matching that atmosphere. Football brought decent “attendance” numbers initially because getting basketball tickets increased points and got you football tickets. But it really brought good attendance numbers with empty seats. And now that football tickets are no longer in such demand, I expect our basketball attendance figures to slowly fall into parity with the rest of the league.

Or you get three top hires back to back. I’m of the mindset if a coach isn’t picked off by a P5 he’s likely not doing a good enough job. We need short term back to back hires like Capel, Grant, Smart were. If BT hadn’t fallen off, and we had followed him with the FGC coach as hoped we’d be on the way. Instead, BT tanked, and we got JJ, who did stabilize things and get us back to average. And I mean that as a good thing.

Agree. VCU had Villa 8 or some such number going for them back in those days. Those great hires were not entirely luck.
Consistency has been and always be a huge problem at our level. If it can be done, you get a Gonzaga.

We sold Scope once. UNC. We had good crowds early but they started to wane even under Paul Webb. The big donors back then forced Jarrett to put Webb out to pasture. His brand of Good D and boring offense did not sell tickets. We once played Wake Forrest in the first round of NCAAs. One of their players said, “we know them and what they’ll do. We’re not worried!”

I just find it funny how everyone then talked about Webb like everyone does about Jones. Took us a long time to recover from the Webb removal.

You may not like Selig, but I’d never want to go back to Jarrett.

I agree, but in today's game Selig has made too many bad decisions. He let BW stay to long, hired Karen Barefoot and extended JJ another 5 years. Except for baseball, the other sports are not doing well also. Don't think RR is going to set the world on fire. He has not coached in 2 years and he has a very young and inexperience squad. He needs time. I predict the 1st season would be like 5-7

Id take 5-7 and be satisfied. I think we're looking at more like 3 or maybe 4 wins.

This is complete bs aside from the last sentence. I challenge you to show a single data point that even remotely reinforces your assertion.

What? He was the coach at a top 10 program when he started his career. He then went on to American for like 20 years because nobody wanted him until Wood threw him a lifeline after a 6 win season there. Coaches that have coached at top 10 programs, gone to the elite 8, and have vast name recognition are not mired at American for 20 years if they are great coaches. Coaches also are not stuck at ODU for 10 years with no offers to go elsewhere unless they have serious baggage, which JJ does not, if they are great coaches. If the people who actually evaluate coaches thought of JJ as highly as you do, he would not be at ODU.
