Chandler can't transfer again without sitting. So he's pretty much here and accepting whatever role Penny gives him. Likely backup to Deandre and Malcolm. That's not a bad gig, with foul trouble and health issues.
Johnathan is a freshman. He will compete and learn. His scholly is for the future, because we likely have a lot of "wings" leaving after this year.

A recap for the Miserables:
Earl > DJ
Davian = Boogie ?
Chandler > Lance
Johnathan = Nesbitt
Minott > Rand
Camden = Baugh ?
Sam +

Of course, if Cisse leaves, then that is a "minus" compared to Sam. Too, if he leaves, Penny likely goes after another transfer.
If he comes back, then this team is really loaded.
I think the "5" is fine, either way. I would like to see an elite PG, but so would 300 other teams.

Minutes will work out. Penny plays a lot of guys in various positions. If guys don't like how they are used, they will leave. In today's world, they are always going to leave. So why not load up and take your best shot.

CA quoted Penny this week saying he learned over the last few games of the season that the team was more productive playing a shorter bench. Keep that in mind with your analysis along with the fact that there are a total of 200 mins available each game regardless of how they are spread.

There are 13 scholarship players on every team...

If you recruit well you are going to have 4* not getting minutes...I say that is a good problem to have.

I do question who is leaving next year outside of Deandre...Don't we already have 2 committed.

Moussa and Nolley would be my guess...I say the Lawsons stick due to one of them not being able to transfer again without sitting.

Next year's problems are a ways away...But Moussa (if he's back this year) for sure, and Nolley most likely. Then there's Earl, who is projected in the 2022 NBA draft already. Warren possibly. Then there will be a couple of likely casualties from dissatisfied roles.

Timberlake, Nolley, Williams, LQ, and if he comes back ... Cisse. That's your starters.
Minot, Warren, Alo, Lawson and Dandritch next 5 in. Jayden and Jonathon could sulk. Sam and Camden probably leave early. JMHO ... 07-coffee3

I think those two are going to be surprisingly effective.

They fill roles...Especially if Cisse doesn't return.

Camden looks much more solidly build then Minott and neither looks like they are going to be able to guard the 3. Camden gives more shooting to space the floor which we are going to need since we really aren't bringing any other shooters in to replace DJ and Boogie.

Tyreke Evans, also 6'6, started at SG to begin his season at Memphis, but was shifted to PG a few games into the season. Both he and the team struggled until that move and flourished afterward.

Memphis lost to Seton Hall, Xavier, Georgetown, & Syracuse.

Coach Cal made that move 9 games in and Memphis went on to win 27 games in a row.

Went 33-4 & 16-0 in Conference

But even before that during the Final Four season when you watched the offense & studied the box score it was Antonio Anderson that was facilitating the offense not as much Derrick Rose.

That was the beauty of the dribble drive system everyone handled the ball & drove the basket even into the heart of a Zone D.

And that is the bottom line with the dribble drive and all offenses like ours. Even if everyone can handle the ball, someone has to drive the car. In no shape or form was Anderson facilitating the offense. The only reason he had the ball some of the time, was because Rose was so good off of the ball. CDR often initiated the offense; either beating his man, or handing it off to Rose who would beat his man.

We can run an effective offense without a point guard like we did after Lomax got hurt. We are a better team when we have good off the ball movement and the ball is in Lomax' hands.

Warren can be an effective shooter, so it's not that we aren't bringing in "any shooters". His freshman year, when he didn't have to carry as much of the offense, he shot 37% from 3 and 49% overall. That's at least better than DJ.

Just a minor point - cal wasn’t the reason Tyreke was moved to PG, Tyreke’s brothers were.

Of course Cal the king of the interview spun it and said things after we started winning like “I don’t know who the coach was at the beginning of the season.” If you knew the real story, comments like those were even funnier.

I think you're confusing the vernacular of South Memphis with Chester/Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Not even remotely the same accent ............ nice try

I thought it was strange at the time.

He repeated it often in interviews and had a few different cal-canned-comment versions of it.

And now you know the rest of the story. Good-Day!

Would it have made for better PR for either Cal or the Evans’ family, to say Reke’s brothers demanded the move? I can’t see how that would have benefited either party.

I thought it was strange at the time.

Would it have made for better PR for either Cal or the Evans’ family, to say Reke’s brothers demanded the move? I can’t see how that would have benefited either party.

Nah. I just meant it seemed like there was more to the story when Cal said it. A strange thing for a noted narcissist to "admit to".

They went to Cal and said they’d pull Tyreke if Cal didn’t put him at PG.

Of course Cal the king of the interview spun it and said things after we started winning like “I don’t know who the coach was at the beginning of the season.” If you knew the real story, comments like those were even funnier.

“I was a terrible coach earlier for not having Reke at the point.” Or something similar.

Not when you translate it: MY decision to move Tyreke to point guard was brilliant!
