A handful of these schools are getting a poor return on their investment — including Indiana (for which I have long rooted).

Northwestern and TCU? Those are head-scratchers.

By conference...

ACC - 7 of top 25 basketball spending schools
B12 - 5
BIG, SEC & Big East - 4
PAC - 1

The ACC is investing in the wrong sport.

Bill add Louisville to that list. Coach Mack’s seat is beginning to get warm here in Louisville. He fired two assistants (didn’t renew their contracts) back in March. If Louisville doesn’t make a deep tournament run next March, Mack might be looking for a job.

I read last weekend while UCLA was playing in the Final Four that Louisville might have hired the wrong basketball coach from the City of Cincinnati. 04-jawdrop

So Alabama, FSU, and Texas aren't head-scratchers??? They are to me!!! It's also surprising not to see Auburn on here. The rest look like the usual suspects.

Next year is huge, CJim. I follow UofL men's hoops somewhat closely (and quietly root for the Cards).

I can see how the CMack seat might be warming.

Northwestern is a weird name on the list, but this data is from 18-19 and they renovated their arena right before that so that probably inflates their numbers.

I wouldn't have expected TCU to be in the top 25, let alone #6.

Northwestern and Providence can be explained due to their new facility upgrades. I'm unsure of TCU though. Dixon has a $3.67 million salary, which is easily top-20 in the country. They don't rent an NBA arena either. I didn't think they got any new basketball facility. Could their 2015 renovations be part of their spending?

Mack should never have left Xavier.

I can see where facility upgrades could inflate the numbers.

The Jamie Dixon annual salary of $3.67M ... insane. He is 34-54 (.386) in five seasons of Big 12 league play.

Just a guess, but the operating costs of Schollmaier Arena may be embedded in those numbers.

Seems like there would be a system to exclude one off expenses for facilities etc so we're not left guessing which are "accurate" numbers and which are total flukes.

RE: These 25 Colleges Spend the Most on Men’s Basketball
I don't see Mack's seat being hot at all.

The fans who are upset are the very vocal minority. Who also seem to forget what Mack had poised to play in March last year, and hold it against him that he didn't advance in a tournament that didn't happen. And for some reason, expected the team THIS year to perform, when the truth of the matter is the upper classes that should be there, were gutted due to the turmoil of Padgett's interim year, an impossible place to recruit from.

Cards had 3 seniors on the roster, 2 of which were grad transfers. Of the seniors, we got 1 full season from one, and about 5 games from the other two combined.

Cards has 0 juniors. And the rest sophomores, freshmen, or RS freshmen.

Add in the 3 covid pauses, 2 in the middle of the season, and it becomes obvious what happened this year.

Yes. The costs of the arena renovation are included here.

And Jamie Dixon is an alum. He was a star point guard for them in the 80's. It would be hard for them to fire him. At the same time, their program was at rock bottom when they joined the Big 12. They were in way over their heads in basketball. Dixon was hired to make them competitive in the Big 12 as their arena was rebuilt. They're now competitive, but dragging bottom in a tough conference. They finished 8th this year, as K-State and ISU were awful.

Well that's quite TheBasketballOpinion wouldn't you say.

In the future you will see more and more football first schools making that list. They are the ones who are going to have the extra money to invest.

Texas is the wealthiest Athletics Department in the country ... Texas being in the top 25 in spending in any sport is no head scratcher for me.

Do well in the sport? "We really ought to invest in that sport to reward them for the success."

Do poorly in the sport? "We need to invest in that sport so people do not blame the results on the AD not providing enough resources."

The BE schools are largely there due to paying rent at pro facilities; nova and provvy to a lesser extent than GU and MU. I’m surprised that Memphis isnt on the list.

We (GU) play in an alum owned arena and he apparently cares nothing about alma mater. Charges us exorbitant rent with a contract that apparently requires us to play all home games at his nba arena.
