BT was a great guy and he did a lot great things here. There is no disputing that. But no school in the country would have allowed him to return after that.
Don't say no school...becasue there are tons of schools that have dubious coaches. Blaine was drunk, others just plain cheat and break the rules on a regular basis. They get a slap on the wrist and get hired by the next guy, who is suddenly surprised when they end up sanctioned by the NCAA. Yes Blaine embarrassed the university, and who knows, maybe that was the last straw in a long line of infractions, but seems like he has paid the piper and has gotten his life in order. I am not saying ODU should hire him, but I think if he wants to coach, someone should give him a shot.
But Blaine probably wasnt good enough to overcome those issues. Blaine was a good coach but he wasn't the Kelvin Sampson...I can do whatever I want level.

I don't know, in his prime if you put Blaine at a UNC or Villanova, I bet he could have gone far. All these power 5/6 coaches are good, but it is the reputation their predecessors established that they survive on. Put Roy Williams at ODU rather than UNC and I bet he is not nearly as successful.

The question wasnt whether we should hire him now. The question was whether we should have allowed him to retain his job while going through rehab.
And it wasn’t just because he embarrassed the school. He came to practices, games, coaches shows and fan functions half in the bag. Recruiting went down with him. His assistants were left having to deal with his mess and pick up the slack. The players were robbed of a year of coaching and mentorship by their head coach. He let all of those players and their families down. Retaining him through that would have been a terrible choice.

This is all crazy hypothetical, but I will add to it. If the admin had taken action before it got to the point of BT showing up everywhere, including at games, drunk, and required him to get some help to retain his job, this may have played out differently. It is probably not a fair expectation because this is not how things are done in college sports, but it is an interesting thought.

Honestly, with how low he got, he likely doesn't recover without losing the job. And he's said himself it was a good thing for him.

He’s currently out of coaching and living in Vegas.

Blaine was an exceptional coach for ODU. I loved the years and teams he coached. But he is a drunk and it was his downfall. You can’t go back to being a cucumber once you become a pickle. Wish him the best with his demons. End of story. Move forward. Next.

Blaine was a pretty good coach. He had a couple great years with Bazemore and company.
Having said that, just because he was an alcoholic doesn't mean he could not change. Its very judgemental and frankly stupid to suggest he could not recover.

It's a real struggle. One study by AA, found that 24 percent of the participants were sober 1-5 years while 13 percent were sober 5-10 years.
