Sitting here behind my keyboard I can say that, given the opportunity, I would replace JJ with BT tomorrow. As a business person, who has to hire people, it is highly unlikely I would actually make that move if it was presented to me in the real world.

That's exactly what makes BTs' situation so tragic. Most every one loves the guy and in an ideal world would take him back in a heart beat, but living in this atmosphere, no one would take the chance.

Some people deserve a second chance. Ian McCaw isn’t one of them.

On the other hand, maybe the pressures of being a D1 head coach would be the thing to knock Blaine off the track, just as being away from that job helped clear the way for him to get on it. Hard to say, but I think if he wanted a HC job somewhere, he would have gotten one, or at least been in the conversation for it.

Even if it was droppig down to a DII or DIII school. But playing devils advocate, I have to believe he took the Gig in Cali to try and rehab his reputation. That and I can't believe Vegas is a great place for anyone with alcohol issues.

I have mixed emotions for Blaine. He took us to the next level and then drown in a bottle, which brought us to the season we don’t speak of. Sigh...what a tragic story. But he is Monarch royalty for life - regardless of where he is now.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing... probably shouldn't be in Vegas. Also agree he should be able to find a head coaching job if he wanted one. Don't think he'd have to drop down to DII either. A school like a Longwood or even a low end CAA or A10 school like Towson or Fordham would have absolutely nothing to lose by giving him another chance. Hope he is holding it together.

That said, he will never be back at ODU in any capacity, especially with Wood Selig here. They were oil and water, even when things appeared to be going well.

We need a young innovative coach, not some retread. And if you knew a story or two about the end of BT time here, you'd drop your hate of Selig for a moment. He was thrown into an untenable position of embarrassment to the University by the coach.

I can have a strong distaste for Wood and still understand that BT was a disaster for the university at the end. In fact, Wood could have fired him earlier, this issue didn't happen all of a sudden when he started showing up to practice, games and radio shows drunk. If he had fired him earlier, ODU basketball would have been in a lot better position, BT probably would have been in a better position and JJ would probably be out of work after American fired him. So let's not pretend Wood was a victim in all of this. He runs the athletic department and has made a lot of really poor decisions.

Certainly not in all things, but in this case he was victimized by BT's behavior and one incident in particular that was even worse than him being found passed out in a parking lot in VB by a friend of mine. But we certainly won't see eye to eye on this.

Blaine is certainly responsible for his own behavior, and while I strongly dislike Wood Selig and feel he has blatantly mismanaged the AD, he is not to be blamed for Blaine. However, they hated each other from day 1 and, while Blaine is responsible for his actions, I wouldn't be surprised if that relationship contributed to the progression from functional alcoholic to a true IDGAF attitude toward his entire life.

My point is that he was the boss. If he was being "victimized" by BT's bad behavior, he should have fired him right then. If he had, all parties probably would have been better off.

American Univ Fired him? Since when?

In the parallel universe in which we did not hire him. He would not still be the coach there.

RE: Where is Blaine?
How do you know he would not have been the coach at American?

Which coaches at American did as well as Jeff Jones? Other than the season after Jones left and Brennen took Jones players to the NCAA tourney, they have been completely irrelevant.

He had 4 20 win seasons while coaching. They've had 10 20 win seasons total in history. What are we basing this assumption that he would have been fired?

Where is Oliver Purnell? Was his tenure at Dayton considered a good one (from Dayton fans?)

My perception of Purnell, and that's all it is, was that he enjoyed early success at Longwood? and ODU, but did not stay at either school long enough to build a real track record. Once he went to Dayton and Clemson, he failed to produce and was exposed.

You are correct! Oliver came to ODU from Radford. He’s a rich dude now too. He exposed his bank account to some nice money!

So the progression would have been. Radford, ODU, Dayton, Clemson to Depaul.
