Therein lies the biggest problem. Roy's system just didn't work anymore. The game had passed his coaching philosophy by.
His teams couldn't defend the dribble drive and his solution was to crash the wing down to the post to double team the dribbler, leaving a player on the wing wide open to receive a pass and a wide open three point shot. It's why the Heels were playing .500 basketball over the last couple of seasons.
Hubert had no coaching experience other than under Roy and has been out of the pro game for for almost 20 years. He can only coach the way he has been taught which does not work anymore.

Multiple sources, including from within the athletic department, reported the 5 finalist for the job were:
Jay Wright, Brad Stevens, Mark Few, Wes Miller and Hubert Davis.
If you were in charge of a multi-million dollar basketball corporation, which of those men would you trust?
It's a sad day for the University and for Carolina basketball.

You are saying a coach who led his team to the finals 5 seasons ago, the national championship 4 seasons ago, and went 29-7 and the sweet 16 two seasons ago has been "passed by" and is obsolete?

Sorry, I'm not buying that.

Stevens would have been a home run hire. And I would have been fine with Miller. I want to give Davis a chance as I see some strong potential. But, yes, I have some doubts.

esayem, I have a bridge in New York you might be interested in owning.

I think 5 years ago Hubert Davis would have been a top candidate, a finalist, for the UNC job. I don't necessarily think he should have been or be, I have always thought the best approach for an elite program is to find a coach with a proven track record as a head coach at the same level - make bids on Gonzaga's coach, Villanova's coach, stuff like that. But the UNC way has been to look in-house, and Davis's in-house credentials are impeccable - played for Dean Smith, coached under Roy Williams.

That said, I do think Davis was helped, perhaps boosted over the finish line, by recent developments - the BLM movement that has shined a spotlight on providing African-Americans with more opportunities, and the recent trend, with some prominent success stories** like Michigan and Memphis, of hiring ex-NBA players as college head coaches at big time programs.

** Sadly, my Georgetown has not been a success story.

Yep! the NBA influence in the past few season had passed Roy's philosophy by, everybody in Chapel Hill knew it but Roy was too stubborn to change. When he no longer had better talent than 95% of the teams he faced, he couldn't or wouldn't change his coaching style to match his players talents.
Round peg meets square hole. Roy was catching it from all sides. Listen or watch his press conferences over the last two years, it's why he always sounded testy, because he was pissed at having to defend his coaching.

Of course Jay Wright, Brad Stevens, or Mark Few would be more qualified than Davis. But do you really believe any of them would have ever considered leaving their current jobs?

And I think it's one thing to say race was a factor but to say what you said is implying Hubert Davis only got the job because he's African American or has no qualifications which IMO is really unfair to him.

So you really think if Williams’ handpicked successor were white it wouldn’t have happened?

I don’t disagree that his system wasn’t succeeding the last few seasons, but I blame him for that. He never seemed to be a distinguished X and O’s coach. He let his superior athletes run the floor and wear teams out. He needs an excellent PG to do that and hasn’t had one the past few seasons, coincidence? And no Cole Anthony and Caleb Love are not PG’s like Marshall or Lawson.

Williams and Smith had different philosophies so maybe Davis does too.

Eh, fans can be irrational, especially after tons of success. Heck, I remember in early 2015, after Alabama lost in the inaugural playoffs to Ohio State, a lot of Alabama fans were questioning Nick Saban's coaching, because God Forbid two straight seasons had gone by since Alabama last won a national title.

And I would say most years Carolina still has better talent than 95% of the teams it faces. Has always been that way.

Few, Wright, Stevens and Miller all reached out to Bubba Cunningham, not the other way around. Cunningham did not have to make A SINGLE call to try to find a replacement.

I believe that. The UNC hoops job is like the Notre Dame or Alabama or Ohio State football job. It's a top-3 job, arguably right up there with Kentucky as the #1 job.

But Carolina likes to look in-house. And over time, it has been a successful approach.

Roy would've had UNC back to contending in a year if not two. I'm shocked he didn't hold out that long to not go out at the bottom of his career.

Some good points, Quo. There are some college basketball programs that lend themselves to being well suited for a Black head coach. Memphis is clearly one (the Tiger program as had five coaches of color).

North Carolina offers a rather robust African-American fan base (unlike, say, Kentucky and Kansas). The time was right for UNC to hire its first Black head coach.

Having said that, and with all due respect to Hubert Davis, I would have preferred Carolina hire Stevens, Few, Donovan or Wright.

It's a shame that the University thought it more important to be woke than to hire the best person for the job.

Hubert Davis has been the coach-in-waiting for years and has tons of institutional knowledge and experience, but go off if you want to make it some sort of woke/cancel thing

For the first time, probably ever, I am going to come to XLance's defense. Re-read X-lance's post, dagummit!!!

X is lamenting the fact that UNC believes that it is more important to be politically correct than to coach basketball. And I have to agree with XLance on this. It is sad that what political views you believe are more important than the job that you were hired to do!!!

Except the only person who said this was Statefan, and he didn't say that's what happened, he speculated that there could have been blowback. That's a far cry from "UNC IS BENDING THE KNEE!"

Davis was Roy's choice to be his successor and he was groomed for the role. This has been common knowledge for years. This isn't a DBO getting turboboosted into leading one of the Mount Rushmore programs. Why so many people are so surprised about this, I don't know.

Personally I like that sometimes sweat equity can give you the promotion over a big name from another school/company. Dance with the girl you brought to the prom.
