I predict a Tom Crean at Indiana sort of performance for North Carolina. (For UNC fans hopefully I'm wrong)

If that is the case, then hopefully this will be the guy to cleanse the palate before the next powerhouse coach who can come in without the expectations to match Williams.

UNC has never had a permanent black head coach. Had they passed on Davis, they would have stoked internal problems that went beyond basketball. Since K is so old and NC State's program has not rebounded over the last 30 years it's a perfect time for them to give Davis a chance.

I'm pleased with this and I'm hoping Robinson stays on staff. At least Davis will recruit some shooters!

Davis has impeccable Dean Smith/Roy Williams/UNC legacy credentials, and his hiring fits in to the "hot" pattern right now of hiring ex-NBA players as head coaches because of their connections and star power.

That said, these in-house hires do not always work. Of the last two such hires, guys with UNC roots who did not have established head coaching credentials of their own coming in, Matt Doherty was a failure and Bill Guthridge didn't really hand around long enough to know for sure.

1) Dean Smith's first head coaching job was Carolina.

2) Roy Williams' first college head coaching job was Kansas.

3) Sometimes when they work out, they really work out.

Side notes: Doh only failed because he was fire and brimstone. That works at Notre Dame, not Carolina.

Davis has been an assistant for the last decade. He knows the program in and out. Oh, he coached the JV team too!

I can see this. Makes sense.

It's a shame that the University thought it more important to be woke than to hire the best person for the job.

White, black or green, this is an uninspired hire IMO. Similar to Craig Esherick at GU, but I guess he at least has the NBA credentials.

Esherick was a goober

Davis has much more cred and is already a national name. I think this will work out well for UNC. They took the experience like I said vs the low major HC.

Hubert Davis has been the coach-in-waiting for years and has tons of institutional knowledge and experience, but go off if you want to make it some sort of woke/cancel thing

For the first time, probably ever, I am going to come to XLance's defense. Re-read X-lance's post, dagummit!!!

X is lamenting the fact that UNC believes that it is more important to be politically correct than to coach basketball. And I have to agree with XLance on this. It is sad that what political views you believe are more important than the job that you were hired to do!!!

Dawg: So you believe it's impossible for a black man to be the most qualified man for a job? I can't say I'm surprised by that.

Sounds like they hired him out of fear, if passing on him would really cause that many internal problems.

Todor: is it AT ALL possible the fear was "letting the best choice slip away"?

I'm only referring to Statefan's opinion.

His opinion isn't that unreasonable. Coach K is 70+ and NCSU and Wake have been down for a generation.

"they would have stoked internal problems that went beyond basketball"

That's the part of his opinion I was referencing. I mean, if it's gonna cause a rift in the entire institution beyond the basketball program, its not worth it. Sometimes I guess you just have to make hires to shut people up and prevent protests, or whatever he was referring to.

Its a smart move. If he flops, just fire him after a couple years and bingo, both sides happy.

Or he's a great coach and is there for 20 years. It would be progress if he flops and is quickly hired somewhere else.

This is stupid. Hubert Davis was Roy Williams’ handpicked successor. End of story. Nothing to do with the color of the man’s skin.
