For football, the covid protocol rules do vary a bit by conference. Here is the best description I've seen for the CAA rules. Like some other conferences, it sounds like it is ultimately left to the school to decide whether they will play:

In the top 25 of what?

Technically, the AP allows FCS team to get votes in the AP top 25 poll, but yea I don't think there was any chance that would have happened anyway in the fall.

I think its happened once or twice, App St and/or NDSU

It does seem like I remember Appy, but I don't know about NDSU. I think we got really close in 08.

Good catch!

Looks like NDSU also got some votes in 2016 after beating Iowa.
The App St win over Michigan in 2007 is what caused them to change the rules, but doesn’t appear App was eligible for votes then.

I would imagine if a team had played and beaten multiple FBS teams in the fall the odds of actually getting ranked would have been better. But I don’t think it was super likely for us this year with a new QB and a couple shaky starts to the season. Still would have enjoyed watching us play UNC

Didn’t we get a vote or two after slapping #13 VippySue around in ‘10?

Still cherish the memories of that Old Dirty/ VaTek Walmart fan crying over that game. Forget his name now.

I think it's more about community spread science. College kids aren't avoiding COVID-19 from what I'm seeing in Harrisonburg. The only demographic more determined to casually observe social distancing and masking guidance is young people. In the fall they just wanted to get back to school so they lived with the rules... now I think they're over it more than the rest of us are, plus they realize they are not among the most vulnerable population. The older population will gain immunity from vaccines while the young ones pass it around and (hopefully) recover.

It does seem like a lot more spring football cancellations than there were fall ones though. Would be interesting to compare by the numbers.

Weird, I thought it takes two teams to agree to play a game but maybe i'm mistaken. Complain all you want but most conferences went with a conference only schedule and the BYU Coastal game only happened due to Covid.

Ratto! Highly recommend checking out some of his work since he moved over to Defector.com. Scathing, curmudgeonly, impressively prolific.

Had we committed to Carolina, we'd have easily picked up three more games as the season got underway. Our student athletes deserve more than what they've been given. It wouldn't feel so bad if we'd kept our priorities in line with what the students expect, but we gave up. Our coaches would bench a player for doing the same. Nothing much worse than leadership setting an example of defeat.

And now the undefeated, #1 ranked FCS team in the country is in hindsight “setting an example of defeat”?

03-phew

JMU should start a contortionist team. We have several AA on this board and would be playing for a NC every year.

My uneducated guess is it's a bunch of small things:
- More classes in person, more people on campus, and mask/social distancing fatigue leading to more exposure on college campuses in Feb/Mar than back in Oct/Nov
- More interactions between student athletes and remaining portion of student body at FCS schools. P5 schools have huge student athlete facilities that are a one-stop shop. Many/most/Majority(?) have their own "dining halls" which helped prevent maskless interactions with people not in the team's bubble. I assume the living situations (proportion of student athlete / student dorm residents) at the average FCS school are more commingled than the P5. NCAA moved to "unlimited food" for student athletes fairly recently and I imagine the "unlimited" is quite a bit bigger at Bama than Albany. As such, more FCS student athletes are relying on trips to Chipotle and grocery stores.
- More testing leads to quicker known positives, which leads to fewer exposure related quarantines, which leads to more players available to practice/play.
- More scholarships and larger rosters to overcome players that are out.
- There are fewer financial (and reputational) consequences when Albany folds than when Michigan folds.

I imagine there are FCS programs that are money losers who would love to cancel their season (or parts of it) every year if they had a built-in excuse to do it without public/alumni backlash

ding, ding, ding.....winner winner.....Chicken Dinner

And this give 100% cover to bail once out of contention with zero repercussions.

I understand while JMU has not scheduled a game as of today for the 10th, they are actively searching for an opponent. They will release game info by tomorrow if we get a game scheduled. JMU is also searching for someone to play us on April 17 too. Also they said JMU WILL receive at the least a “at-large playoff spot.

It also gave RU just enough cover to duck playing us.

Hope we squish those ticks 120-0 in the first round.
