A move up to FBS in the future with this group is unlikely however. So the WAC either will remain FCS or will have to be able to attract western teams from current FBS conferences in order to move up. (UTEP, TSU, UTSA, UNT - possible but not likely)

So what would make the WAC more attractive to the 4 schools you mention at the end than their current conferences? Also I'm going to assume you mean TXST and not Texas Southern.

I always saw this as an opportunity for the Texas Four to get out of the Southland Conference and an opportunity for the WAC to establish stability and strengthen Olympic sports. There may be an opportunity for FBS football in the WAC down the road. There was none in the Southland. The WAC is probably done expanding for now, although they could add one more all-sports member or a couple of football-only schools.

You are right, I meant TXST. Other than a major shakeup, I don't see any of those four moving to the WAC.

I think if I remember seeing on the board that the WAC has some potential loophole they can use. Do I think any of the schools are ready no but it's potentially a thing. Any WAC football henges on New Mexico State being independent in football.

Hard to get a piece of the payout when they don't sponsor the sport (yet). The other conferences will not oblige until the WAC officially returns to the table.

Will it be up and running? Looking that way, yes. But by 2025? Nope.

Yea, the CFP contract ends in 2026. They in my mind have 4 years to try and look FBS worthy before a move up. 2025 gives them a way to try to get involved in the new discussion on the new contract. I wouldn't be surprised if the "plan" for the WAC to try a FBS study to try and get a feel for the other fbs conferences and if the NCAA would allow it. Maybe start a delayed move up let's say starting 2028. During the 2028 and 29 season during the transition periods they get a FCS cut of the deal. During 2030 season they would get a full FBS cut. That's if they don't get a 75% deal for 2030 and get a full cut the next season. (There 10 year plan) If they don't do that I doubt they move up tell the next round of CFP contract discussions if it's still around.

Well, you don't establish stability by adding schools. That's the opposite of stability. 7 schools joined/joining in just a couple years plus another one likely is highly fluid.

If by Olympic sports, you mean basketball, what I see is the 14 potential members competing for 1 tourney bid instead of about 8, without being anywhere near a 2 bid league. Bad kind of stability. Same money, a lot more pigs at the trough...

And if FCS is at least temporarily in the picture, that won't pay many bills.

FWIW, Dixie and Tarleton won't be playoff eligible until 2024-25.

2020 football - SMU 65 vs North Texas 35 in Denton - "all that money and resources" didn't help.

Tarleton has a donor that SMU wishes we had. Abilene Christian and Sam Houston will get left behind once the money starts flowing.

The WAC itself, probably not. WAC members, yes.

These Texas schools and the ASUN football schools are positioning themselves to be at the front of the line for FBS when the realignment occurs.

If C-USA ever splits geographically, both sides are going to take heavily from the SBC. The SBC, in turn, will need replacements, and here comes almost a dozen schools teed up ready for promotion.

RE: Is it possible that the WAC will ever return to FBS?
A study will take place within the next year per the announcements at the WAC expansion press conference in January. Why do we have to create 20 threads, have Todor get upset in multiple forums and keep bringing this up before then?

Let the studies play out, let’s see what happens with the NCAA structure and see where things fall.

BTW, DavidSt probably has some good analytics on this!

Someone that did two years there when it was a junior college then went on to graduate from Texas and has his name on buildings there.

What about Lamar, Stephen F Austin and UTRGV?

Is it possible that the WAC will ever return to FBS?
Possible yes.

WAC offices previously confirmed they maintain the bid based on the NCAA bylaws.

Before start of expansion, NMSU AD said they want to stay FBS and are open to all options including FBS WAC.

Tarleton joined the league. By 2030, they are anticipating 25k students, will have new facilities, and want FBS.

Sun Belt and Conference will not take FBS move ups from the Southland.

Lamar wanted FBS in 2012 but was turned down. Stadium has plans for expansion.

Sam Houston is a football first school with two championship game appearances

SFA had basketball success but neither league took them.

WAC FBS may be the bottom league, but it is at the table. It gets FBS paydays. They don't have to be Michigan/Clemson/LSU, they can meet this criteria as an Eastern Michigan, Coastal Carolina, or Louisiana Monroe level.

That means 20k stadiums, regional alumni interest and marginal budgets.

FBS in name only is still FBS

Not just any building....an entire athletic complex.

Moderator Note: The New Mexico State vs. North Texas pissing match has been moved to the Verbal Assault Area (a/k/a the Smack Board). Alternatively, take it to PMs, guys.

Anyone else who derails threads with it might get a "vacation" from this board.

RE: Is it possible that the WAC will ever return to FBS?
Thank you... So for all of Tarletons FBS plans, time is not on their side. They need facilities work. But if they have plans to be FBS, *progress coming soon plans are not going to draw players.

Same with the other 3 to the east.

To make a non football analogy, California Baptist built a bright shiny new basketball arena as part of the plan to become D1. They played in it while D2, not talking of all that might be, but building it first. That's the way you have to plan.

With fund raising, build out times, etc, I can't see any WAC potential FBS football schools with improved facilities in time to become FBS in a time frame like Tarleton says they are planning for (they were saying within 10 years several years ago).

I agree with the principles you mention, but at the same time, the WAC was left as a desperation conference. People with no where else to go, adding people to make sure they kept an auto-bid rather than grow the league (Chicago State, for example).

This move signals a new era for the WAC, where schools willingly joined together with a shared vision of similarity (which is what conferences are supposed to be). You cannot move from FCS to FBS without a conference sponsoring your move. So the plan is for all of them to elevate to FBS together. Which is a wise plan for the league to bolster their identity.

Liberty did... but you are correct, makes much more sense to move
together which is why the WAC is studying a move to FBS as a conference.

Those being negative (Todor) will be so thrilled if it comes to fruition... don’t get why the negatives reign supreme.

Same scenario, with football as the sport now. Schools that no other conference wants joining the WAC for an auto bid. Its exactly the same thing that happened before. No stability at all. Its like the WAC is a great lure for administrators wandering eyes.

And if you think the east texas 3 are joining the WAC because they share a vision with Seattle U, Utah Valley, California Baptist etc, you may be mistaken. Its just repeating the same process, possibly turning over most of the conference AGAIN, for very little reward and another round of increased instability.

The conference is becoming even more spread out and requiring a lot more travel, schools are even less alike, more differing agendas, more differing visions. Its a cluster.
