RE: UConn Needs To Review Its Move to the New Big East
there is a reason the big east poneyd up millions and millions for the name.

i understand all of the "we did right by selling the name" talking points but here we are...

the big east...is looked at as a power house even though it is a skeleton of what it used to be
the American? the highest of the G5.

a lot of you are thinking to long and hard about it and are the only ones to do it.
the truth is...no one else will..they see the name "big east" and bang! big boys club.

like I said it may turn out to be mute 10 years down the road when we make a name for ourselves
but here we are....fighting.

Not Big East. But something like Atlantic Gulf Conference. Could be improved upon. Otherwise, the AAC was described by one detractor as Conference USA on steroids. Not fair.

I also think several AAC schools and possibly UConn might end up in the P5 sooner than the next decade. Look forward to that day.

I don't think we'll get moved up to anywhere, but I DO think that there still be another split where some will get moved down to the secondary level with us.

PS- I always liked the name Great Midwest for a conference... but that's already been used.

It was the right move for AAC. Other than basketball, UConn was bad. Just losing their FB program elevated the AAC. They are UMass but with better facilities.

UConn gave up on P5 when they went independent in FB. They will drop FB within 5 years, they sent their FB program downriver when they left. From BB standpoint, I understand BE but from a program perception yet long term was a bad move. Their FB program will bleed the other programs.

Not going to bash on UConn

UConn shouldn’t look back they just need to better their current situation as best they can and move on.

This I must say though, I think the AAC was a really good solid fit for UConn competitive wise but unfortunately patience had gone out the window.

RE: UConn Needs To Review Its Move to the New Big East
UConn's struggles (in basketball) have nothing to do with the AAC or NBE. They have to do with Jim Calhoun retiring. When you lose an all-time great coach like that it usually takes a couple hires to replace them. This isn't something new. UCLA had to go through it with Wooden. UNC with Dean Smith. Indiana with Bob Knight. UH with Guy V. It happens.

I think the B12 will merge with some of the AAC after some of the B12 teams head over to the PAC-12 or the B10. UConn may head over to the ACC. I know there are many skeptics. I should also point out that I wanted UConn to stay in the AAC and work to improve the product until P5 came a calling.

They didn’t leave because of competition, it was the financial situation with the 2nd tier tv rights. They didn’t have the foresight to see that ESPN+ was the better deal and streaming is the future.

Leave them alone in the Big East, they will likely drop their football program in a couple seasons. Guess you can watch it on SNY and CBS Sports Network.

UConn wasn't crap in the AAC. They switch to the Big Least and now BOOM, suddenly their good???

... which we saw how good they were when they were routinely dispatched by the 9th place B1G team in the first round.

If anyone cares to remember back to normal world, ALL the decisions were made for football. And yes, the name "Big East" was a joke in the football world. And that's when we still had Louisville, WV, Pitt and Syracuse. With the removal of those, the BE was going to be even more discounted.

So no, giving up the name was not as big of a deal as some make of it now. It's revisionist history.

I'll bet most casual fans don't even know UConn has a football team anymore. They made a huge mistake.

You can talk about the former Big East name in College Football all you want, but the truth of the matter is that the Big East had a contract agreement with the Orange Bowl. When those naming rights were sold, it created a legal avenue through which that contract could be dissolved. After all, the New Big East did not play D1 College Football.

I disagree, but that’s my opinion. I would think and hope that the AAC conference presidents would accept them back into the conference, if they wanted back in. I don’t think that is any other program out there that has as much to offer a conference in NCAA Men’s & Women’s Basketball.

It was definitely the right move, from the NBE they made the NCAA Tournament in Men's BB, as members of the AAC they would have ben in the NIT with Memphis and SMU, the BIAS against the AAC is too great because of the G5 label.

It's not the "G5 label" - - if it were, there wouldn't have been 4 AAC teams in the last NCAA tournament. The Big East teams in the tourney all got in due to their rankings.

The real problem was that the selection committee boosted the number of at-large teams from the P5 conferences from 26 to 29. That's not an "anti-G5" bias - - it is an outrageous "pro-P5" bias!

The point is that you can choose between feeling inferior about being "G5" or you can feel indignant about the selection committee's extreme and increasing bias toward the P5.

Ok - it's your choice - - do you want to feel inferior or feel righteous indignation because your school has been treated unfairly?

I choose the latter.

With their record and rankings, UConn would have been in the NCAA tournament regardless.

Quote:I disagree, but that’s my opinion. I would think and hope that the AAC conference presidents would accept them back into the conference, if they wanted back in.

They might let UConn back in, but it's hard to believe that they would want UConn FB.

Quote:I don’t think that is any other program out there that has as much to offer a conference in NCAA Men’s & Women’s Basketball.

Perhaps, but from a viewership and financial standpoint, men's basketball is to women's basketball as NCAA football is to men's basketball. In other words, men's basketball (MBB) matters a lot more than WBB does to the AAC.

If we compare UConn MBB with VCU MBB:

VCU has had a much more successful MBB program than UConn has had over the past decade.

UConn has only had one 21+ win season in the past six years, and only two 21+ seasons - and one Final AP top 25 team - in the past ten years.

VCU has had three 25+ win seasons in the past six years, and seven 25+ win seasons - and two Final AP top 25 teams - in the past ten years.

.

Dayton has had five 24+ win seasons in the past ten years, and they finished the 2019-20 season as the #3 team in the Final AP Top 25.

St. Louis has had five 23+ win seasons and 4 nationally-ranked teams - and two Final AP top 25 teams - in the past ten years.

.

UConn MBB wouldn't be a bad option, but it isn't necessarily the best available option if/when the American adds a BB school.

.

As far as brands go, Dayton, VCU, and St. Louis aren't in the same stratosphere as UConn.

No---but they are the best available. Futhermore, other than year one, the AAC has never really got the benefit of a blueblood UConn performing consistently like a blue blood. Instead, the typical VCU season would be substantially better than the typical UConn season in the AAC (year one excepted). There is no way to replace the brand value of UConn, but we can and should reload the upper half of our conference with another high quality basketball program like VCU to replace the basketball strength lost when UConn bailed.

I think VCU could improve this league but I disagree that they would substantially or evenly marginally improve it over what we had with UConn

They couldn't replicate it because they couldn't.
We have the teams that could physically do so.
Just look at the field right now...and who has the bigger brand us or the BE? You miss the power of a brand and a name.

they have Villanova who won 2 recent titles.... had cincy won 2 recent titles. and the big east fought every year to just get 3 bids...where no one ever advances .. the aac would have bigger name

you think the name is the magic sauce...when the magic sauce is performance under that name

i disagree with the narrative they wouldnt have gotten a bid in the aac... uconn won quality games in the nonconference, which is what hurt memphis, wichita and smu...they probably win more games when bouknight was out in the aac.. they not only make the tourney in the aac they would have likely gotten a higher seed

but their fans are happy and dont blame the conference for their struggles, so i think its the right move..
uconn failed to reach the title this year again and there were no hot take articles that the big east didnt prepare them, like with the aac...thy just accepted that they lost

04-cheers

We choked in the tourney but were a much better team this year than in recent seasons
