Has great upside.
Trashing him because he left wont change that.
I still wonder about his work ethtic though
Along with the team chemistry aspect.
His ability to accept and agree to play at whatever position the team and coach need him to play in any situation.
It certainly sounded like he complained about being asked to play the 4... though he believed he should have played the 3. It sounded like minutes were an issue and personal goals were ultimately more important than team goals.
None of these guys will be featured players in pro ball...if fortunate enough to earn a paycheck playing this game... and all will be asked to accept a role for the betterment of the team. If I were a pro scout, that would be a RED flag.
For well over 1/2 of last season, this team was considered one of the most selfish, dysfunctional squads in college basketball; and finally after putting personal goals aside, and playing their best basketball of the year, some decided that evolution was not enough. Our team will be better without them.
Playing the 3...
What the heck does that mean...He was a perimeter player on offense. A wing...Just like Nolley was...
Only difference between him and Nolley is DJ had to guard the bigger player. If DJ had an issue with that than he needs to toughen up.
I think it has more to do with not wanting to defend the 4 or 5 than it does playing on the wing on offense.

Well, Penny put the hard sell on Johnathon and Chandler about coming. Invested 2 hours in a Zoom call with the whole family - Uncle Chuck and KJ included. 2 weeks ago now. Still no commitment. I think the presser yesterday and the release of next year's roster - along with the comments about 2 currently open schollies, but we're looking for guys who fit their roles - was part message to The Family. If they don't commit this week, I look for Penny to get 1-2 more guys from the portal.

I just don’t see how adding them accomplishes Penny’s goal of assembling a tougher, team-first roster. This family averages 1 transfer per kid and turns basketball recruiting into bad reality television. Do we really need this drama? Take a step back and go find another versatile big man and a 6’4” PG... and let the Lawson’s join their cousin down in Starkganistan and make Ben Howland’s life more miserable than it already is.

Jeffries probably fits well at MS State. Less hard work, more simple sets to remember, more PT, less wins, etc.

Completely agree...
And honestly it should have given him a huge advantage on the offensive end of the floor. No idea why he would have objected to that...That is an opportunity to shine.

First, I wish DJ well at Miss State.
Regardless, DJ will make money playing basketball and at this point its likely overseas and nothing wrong with that whatsoever. He definitely got his opportunities here. There were several times where Penny tried to ISO DJ to take advantage of either a slower big or smaller guard.
He has the talent and size to play in the NBA. He's an average 3pt shooter with could improve and the same with his handle.
What's missing(IMO) is playing with aggression. He doesn't have to show it like say, Deandre Williams but you should be able to see it with is play.
If he played with more tenacity, he'd probably be in the draft right now. If he attacked the rim, he would be so hard to handle but it tends to drift around the perimeter and shoot jumpers. If he can find a mean streak, we could see him in the NBA.

DJ was slower this year. He looked a little heavier. his size and game essentially make him a 3D player in the NBA. This is why he and his Dad did not want him playing the 4 or 5. They wanted to show the NBA he could play that position. Problem was his speed. when playing the 3, he could not get past his defender, who was usually a smaller guard. He also could not keep smaller guards from driving when he switched on PNR.
We all know he would have been more effective for us at the 4. He and his family were more concerned about the NBA position. I don't fault their intentions, just the decision.
either way, he'll be good for MSU. I wish him the best.

There is no "3" in Pennies offense.
Nolley and DJ had the same role in Pennies offense. Nolley played on the wing Just like DJ played on the Wing. Only difference was who DJ guarded and who guarded DJ.

Right. Which is why DJ didn't get more minutes. If he head been flexible, he would have been way better off.

They currently average 1.3333333 transfers per kid.
I could see adding them. Chandler would be a good backup to Deandre. And he would likely accept that role, knowing he should start next year, and he can't really transfer again. Johnathon would be a backup CG, and grow into his minutes as a freshmen. They would be good pieces this year, and potential starters next year.
Latest word from Jason Smith (who calls Keelon every morning) is that Creighton is going hard after Johnathon, to pair him with Mason Miller. (Creighton lost their entire starting 5, and have had 1-2 decommits). That could leave Chandler for us or Arkinsaw (who only wants Chandler, anyway). In that case, Penny might be okay with taking Chandler now, and Johnathon in a year or 2 when he inevitably transfers.
But if nothing is announced by tomorrow, I'm betting Penny walks away and goes after other guys.
