I’m not a insider or claim to be close to the program like a few around here claim but a coworker that’s tied to the program told me today that Penny pushed DJ and Baugh out.

He also said Boogie was eventually looking to leave regardless. He also said Cisse is 50/50

MarkG says that in his opinion only one of Cisse / Dandridge will be back. And right now it’s looking like Dandridge is the one that comes back. Which shocks me. Apparently a lot of schools are talking to Cisse.

If he loses Cisse that just doesn't look good. But it makes sense.

You don't need 3 traditional bigs.

But If Cisse leaves that means we have lost:

Stokes***Likely not Pennies fault but he did recruit the kid.
Rand
Lance
Boogie
DJ
Baugh
Cisse

This year.

That is not a ringing endorsement of the coach.

Cisse would really baffle me. Again, he was a great defensive player but extremely limited offensively. Despite, his obvious limits, Penny still ran plays designed to get him lobs and shots around the rim. He also clearly was a much better player at the end of the season as opposed to the beginning of the season.

Could be - but there is another side to that coin. What does that say to other players that see them in the portal and not highly rated, when they came to Memphis highly rated to learn from an NBA legend about what it takes to get to the league? Do they become poison as an example of what Penny had in the program and what he turned them into as far as NBA potential material? If their skills worsened, does it reflect on Penny? I hope not, but that could be an unwelcome result....

It definitely won't. There are players ranked higher out of high school that are transferring after getting almost no playing time and averaging less than 5 points per game.

It doesn't reflect poorly on Penny at all. We saw the team play very selfishly for a year and a half, with many thinking it was Penny's fault. We saw in the last 17 games, that it was all on the players. When the players bought in, the results great.

You can for sure blame Penny for part of it, because it is his job to recruit players and get through to them. On the other hand, when I look at how Boogie and DJ played, I can turn it around and say that it took a near miracle for Penny to get through to them finally.

In the end, we are going to get players a little less or a little more talented to replace them, and we should get players that have their heads in the right space.

If there are 30 transfers ranked higher than Baugh and DJ, I like Penny's odds of getting 2 of them.

And they shouldn’t be. They both underachieved. I admit they did play well towards the end. But inconsistent is an understatement.

You talking about his leaving or the probability of his catching a quick pass from another player?

He's not even the best player in the country named Moussa. I watched the kid from IMG yesterday and he's pretty stellar.

The players played a certain way for a year and a half. We know for sure that the coaching staff was not telling them to play that way. By some miracle, the coaching staff got them to make major changes halfway through this season. With those changes in place, the same team finished the season playing at the level of a top 25 team, and maybe even a top 10 team.

After going through all that, and seeing definitive proof that the coaches knew what was best, 3 players and maybe more are transferring out. Clearly, the roster and the blueprint is in place to have a great year next year.

IMO, Boogie and DJ are just selfish. Both would get 25 minutes plus per game next year for a team that has a chance to be at Elite 8 level. They aren't going to have anything close to that kind of a guarantee at any other peer school in the country.

Why anyone, especially Penny would decide to put themselves through dealing with all the crap from kids these days, is beyond me. I wouldn't want to do it for a week.

Toppert and Penny are both great recruiters who work hard, but I wish we could quickly fill our open assistant spot to help with this matter. Surely Penny knows who he wants considering he took over half a year to hire Jermaine Johnson on the last one.

It isn't as crucial now. Most of the recruiting is done virtually. Coaches aren't flying around on planes and driving to see recruits. They for sure aren't watching kids play in person.

From the Athletic article:

Quote:36. D.J. Jeffries, 6-7 forward, junior, Memphis

Jeffries was known mostly as a scorer coming out of high school, yet he’s been more of an effort player during his two years at Memphis. He grabbed 5.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore, offered strong defense and made all the hustle plays. That’s not to suggest he can’t put the ball in the hole; Jeffries has been right around 10 points per game for his career while shooting 36.6 percent from 3. His line from the NIT title game win over Mississippi State shows his all-around potential: 15 points, five rebounds, five blocks, two assists and 2-of-4 on 3s. With his length and now-established motor, Jeffries could blossom into an NBA-caliber 3-and-D wing if the scoring piece develops.

Quote:39. Boogie Ellis, 6-3 guard, junior, Memphis

Ellis was the American Athletic Conference Sixth Man of the Year as a freshman, and as a sophomore, he posted 10.2 points per game. You have to take the good with the bad with him, because he has a streaky jump shot that can make him look like a star at times and unplayable at others. Ellis scored 27 points against Houston in the AAC tournament semifinal and had 23 points in the NIT championship game. But there were also times Penny Hardaway had to yank him out of the lineup. Ellis shot just 40 percent from the floor this season, though he improved his 3-point shooting from 32.4 percent as a freshman to 38.6 percent in Year 2. At 6-3, he’s got a good handle and can score in the post, and he’s a decent defender. Yet he didn’t create much for others despite often playing point guard, as his 1.5 assists per game this season attests. The San Diego native could opt to play closer to his West Coast roots.
