Olympic sports at Carolina are doing great, and Carolina football is in the best shape it's been since 1998. I don't think Davis failing would lead to Cunningham being fired. If he'd hired someone outside the family and they failed, he'd be gone with them. Every Carolina player interviewed wanted it to stay in the family and Roy personally recommended Davis. Bubba is pretty well insulated.
Family or not, hiring someone with Zero HC experience for one of the biggest jobs in college hoops is silly. Put very little stock in players sticking up for him, he's a former player, they always stick together.

You don't understand the family aspect at Carolina. This isn't Carolina players defending the hire. Carolina players were pushing for the hire. That isn't a subtle difference. There were differences of opinion on which former player, but all wanted a former player.

FWIW, I don't think Bubba missed on Fedora. He led Carolina through a never ending investigation and represented Carolina well. His 2016 team was really freaking good, but for whatever reason, he couldn't build off of it. He didn't work out long-term, but he wasn't a complete bust. Carolina football was is disarray 3 years ago and his hiring of Mack Brown was almost universally laughed at.

Trying to analyze Hubert Davis day 1 is foolish. The reason to love and hate it are obvious to all.

Since you are a UNC fan, curious what you would consider “successful” over the next five seasons? Sweet 16s, final fours, just making the NCAA tournament?

Interesting question. Gut was always a short-term solution and Doherty was famously bad so this is new. He’s replacing a legend, so there will obviously be a step back, but I don’t think Carolina’s expectations change significantly. Next 5 years: 5 tournament appearances, 2 S16 and 1 Final Four.

Thats pretty fair. Program seems to be in pretty good shape and Hubert could probably recruit his way to an NCAA Tournament berth every year. After that it likely comes down to his coaching ability which is up in the air at the moment.

Dominating performance by Scott “he could have been your coach at UNC instead you choose someone with no experience “ Drew’s squad

Hey Hoops, curious on your thoughts regarding Duke settling for Jon Scheyer as their future head coach.

Awesome, it's a great hire, are you kidding me, home run...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Ha ha i kid i kid, It's a terrible hire! My buddy who's a big Duke guy texted me this morning " Carolina makes terrible hire for HC..... Duke " Hold my beer".
I couldn't agree more. The Red Sea is parting for Keatts, if he can't get it done now at State he never will.

LOL, I just needed to hear it from you. I had fun last night texting with a few buddies that were trying to explain how Scheyer is different than Davis.

State looks good on paper next year, but I'm assuming the NCAA will render a decision at some point regarding Gottlieb. Maybe I'm wrong, but I assume they'll receive a post-season ban whenever the decision is final. I don't wish that on Keatts, but their fan base, you betcha.

I may get/give a lot of crap here, but i'm mostly consistent in my line of thinking on most topics. I don't think it's a good hire for many of the same reasons i didn't think Davis was. Honestly, it's even more head scratching. K has more former assistants in his "tree" that would be considered family that have had success elsewhere than Carolina did to choose from. I just don't get how you hand the keys to a top 5 program(in both cases) to a guy with Zero HC experience it's mind numbing to me.

How's the Davis hiring working out? I heard his interview this morning talking about practice after the losses, if you haven't heard if you should find it he sounds concerningly soft. So soft the local show was saying they wish they were his kids with the lack of discipline

How's it working out? Well, they seem to be on pace to be as good as, if not better, than any of Syracuse's teams since 2014. That isn't the Carolina standard, but I don't get why you're phrasing the question like this as if you were the lone Nostradamus to see flags in Carolina hiring an assistant coach. It's too early draw conclusions, but some of the concerns that EVERYONE had are coming to bear.

Regarding "local announcers", who are you talking about? You're in Raleigh; those aren't unbiased sports analysts. They're radio personalities and most of them hate Carolina and will look for any opportunity to kick while they perceive Carolina to be vulnerable. The fact that they're playing clips from a PC after Saturday's loss when Carolina played and won last night reveals their motive.

I'm not worried about Davis being soft either. I have questions about his coaching, but none about his personality or character.

This Carolina team is remarkably unathletic. Davis said Wake was more talented, which I disagree with, but they are more athletic. Guards can't defend penetration and there's no post presence protecting the rim either. TBH, they looking really undisciplined on defense and that concerns me more than their limitations on offense, which are also significant.

The question had Zero to do with Cuse, quit deflecting. Jimmy should have retired 5 years ago, I'm aware of that. He basically threw a fit when they moved to the ACC, played out the big east momentum he had for a few years and has been average at best since despite a few runs. Was merely going back to our convo. The interview would concern me, and it was not a presser from after Sat loss, it was how he motivated them at practice after the losses, pretty certain it was after last nights W. He sounded super soft in the interview, to the point they were making fun or him wishing they were his kids with him being that soft. The fact that they are not athletic and Deep would concern me as well. Honestly, as an outsider i'd have thought that recruiting would be the least concern. Obviously it's still early, if we drew the line on Siddle after this much time we'd have looked foolish now. Will be interesting to see if they lose to State. And for the record, Miller looking pretty darn good at Cinci and i still think that was THE hire. I'm consistent when it comes to that line of thinking, i think it was silly for ND football, Duke, and Carolina to hand the keys of top program busses to someone with no HC experience.

So your point wasn’t to criticize his coaching, rather a soft speaking interview? I doubly don’t care what a State fan on the radio has to say about that. Please tell me who you were listening to!

They’re not athletic and that concerns me. The team reminds me of 2001 regarding athleticism. think Carolina has a PG issue and this off-season we will see addition by subtraction.

But, no one was arguing with you last year. All of the risks and unknowns were obvious when they hired Davis.

State isn’t a great matchup for Carolina. Seabron is a really good player and I am not sure Carolina can stay in front of him. It’s winnable, but they could lose by 20.

It was the Adam Gold show, i don't listen enough to know which way he leans, and it's more about the content of the interview. If he really treated the players the way he described after a terrible week last week, that's a problem.

Carolina beating State....so predictable that there wasn't even a mention of the game in the N&O on Sunday. I've never seen the local paper just pretend like a game didn't happen.

That seems a bit odd, i don't usually read the news paper but i just looked on the website when you mentioned and there is an article praising Carolina in the sports section today.
That game was such a beat down i shut it off 2 mins into the second half to watch other CAA games.

It's hard to believe, isn't it? I don't subscribe, so I'm taking others account at its face. There were some online stories, but no reference in the print edition.
