Coach Burno burning up on the recruiting trail
Just got a second commitment from a point guard: 6 foot three transfer from Tulsa originally from bloom high school in Chicago. Gotta love the length.

With three of his first four commits being PGs, including his first two high school commits, it appears that we can take Coach Burno at his word. I heard on an interview that he was going to put an emphasis on recruiting the PG position.

Here’s another interview (not the one referenced above) with Coach Burno.

RE: Coach Burno burning up on the recruiting trail
Honest question...with 3 PG recruits and 1 ball...and presumably only 1 starter...are we having some kind of hunger games style scrimmage to decide who gets the minutes?

As a casual observer, but a man who enjoys statistics and analytics, nothing gets me more upset than not having a plan.

I get having talented guys on the roster is never bad, but we need a full team out there - what’s the plan when 25% of your scholarship guys are point guards?

One of them seems like a 2G at 6 3 maybe that is where he will play.

I am glad that he is concentrating on the point guard position as we haven't had a good one since Travon Baker left in 2016.

HS point guards don't always stay point guards in college.

Compare it to a high school centerfielder or shortstop on a baseball team. Those are where the best athletes play.

For basketball, if you're short and the best player, you play point guard.

Big Red, I assume you mean that if you're short and you play PG in HS, you can be looked at either at the point or SG in college.

I would hate to hear that center is an option in college for a short PG from HS. My winking Emoji is not working, so I will use a very old school winking emoticon: *W*

I like what I'm seeing here. Three threads on NIU Basketball right now and more than just a few Huskies in here are excited. I haven't seen this in a while.

I do like the work Burno is putting in so far. Let's see what it looks like on the court!

Yeah, that's always the thing. Right now Burno is a mystery because we have no clue how his message, style and players translate to the court and the potential for success.

We're all excited about how he has expressed his message and, what I do know is, I haven't been this optimistic (and yes, I often try to be optimistic about players coming in but I also try to be honest) about incoming players in quite some time. I didn't really follow hoops recruiting nearly as close as I do back in the Monty draft classes of Porter and Wilson and Key and Bradley and those guys. They just showed up and I heard good things. I look way deeper into it now and try to see the guys before the commit and, again, I really like what I'm seeing.

I was excited and optimistic when Monty was hired but he and Burno are two totally different personalities. And I REALLY like what I'm hearing from Burno. Every time he talks. He just commands respect and credibility and reliability.

Monty was a good dude. But over time, it seemed he was just that. A good dude who players came to play for because they liked him.

With Burno, I feel like he selling an idea. A vision. It feels like he has a plan. Not for next year, but for 5 years. You can see it in his recruiting and you can hear it in his words.

What was the story on Marshawn Wilson? I was very excited when he committed. See he got good time as a freshman, was reduced as a sophomore, and later was kicked off the team. What happened?

I will venture a "guess" on Marshawn..........work ethic--either in the classroom or in practice. It's purely a guess but the fact that he apparently didn't land ANYWHERE else (D2, NAIA, etc) tends to make me believe he could have just been a poor apple. Pure speculation since I don't believe there is a real trail of what the factual story is.

That was my understanding as well. I believe I heard (nothing ever gets reported about this stuff so its all secondary information and grapevine stuff) that he was unreliable and had terrible work ethics. There was also comments about some general knuckleheadedness.

I know in the past, when he or Laytwan Porter have been brought up, the immediate name some go to is Eugene German. I think that's pretty unfair. While I do agree that German had his knuckleheaded moments, he countered that with a work effort that was unmatched. The dude basically lived in the Convo. He was the definition of "first guy to the gym, last guy to leave". Often the only one to show up.

Either way, I do think its pretty telling that neither Porter nor Wilson ever played basketball again for any team or at any level (collegiate and/or some level of professional). That speaks volumes to what their reputations were when they left NIU.

RE: Coach Burno burning up on the recruiting trail
Marshawn Wilson did not want to be a college student and do the academic part. He also had some difficulties learning. Porter ended up wanting back on the team but he ran out of chances. Wilson, Highsmith, Baker, Maric, Nader, Key, Bradley, German, Aaric Armstead, James, Bowie, Porter, Pauga, Thorpe were all great recruits but it didn’t work out due to injury and for a couple immaturity. So far I don’t see any of coach Burno recruits as better than these guys. It may and hopefully does work out better but from a recruiting standpoint, Highsmith, Wilson, Nader were big time recruits out of high school
