Disagree. Baugh could routinely get to the rim. And if he had been a perimeter threat, it would have made getting to the rim easier. But what we'll miss from him is his length on D (DJ too). It gave us great versatility to guard even with Cisse & Dandridge on the bench. But as for shooting, it wouldn't take much for Baugh to have become a scoring threat. I'm not talking about 20 pt avg, just 10-12 a game with a perimeter shot. I believe he will get there with minutes & gained confidence.

There is little historical comp to indicate a 3 ppg guy becomes a 10 ppg guy if he's staying in similar competition.

See Damien Wilson, David Nickleberry, etc.

What was Baugh getting, 10-12 mins/game? Just a little improvement & playing 30+mins would get him there. Won't happen at Memphis but can happen based upon where he ends up.

Baugh is never going to be more than a 5-6 Ppg player and a defensive replacement.

He has to really work on his basketball skills...Shooting and ball handling.

If those improve Baugh can be a very good college player.

So just a few more minutes is all it takes to go from a 28% career 3-shooter, to a 38% NBA potential guy?
No problem!

What's the big deal. Are you afraid he might have some success post Memphis? We're taking about a guy with exception physical skills simply going from 3.4 pts avg in 10-12 mins per game to 10 pts in 30 mins playing time avg. That's not much to expect. Baugh just needs to find the mins & if he improves his shot in process, it's not much to expect.

ATLANTA MATH
Baugh 10-12 minutes
3.4 points per game
30 minutes per game = 10 points per game

ACTUAL MATH
- Baugh 19.6 minutes per game
- Would have to play 57.6 minutes per game to average 10 points per game
- Would average 5.2 points per game if he played 30 minutes

FUN FACT
- At 30 minutes per game, Jayden averages 7.9 points (Baugh 5.2 points)
- Jayden would have to play 38.1 minutes per game to average 10 points (Baugh 57.6 minutes)

So, according to Atlanta, Baugh, who only needs 30 minutes per game and a slightly improved jump shot to get to the NBA, gets destroyed in every point/minute metric by Jayden.

Baugh's high game this year was 10 points and he did that one time this year. I like Baugh and he played really hard but it was hard to have him and ALo in the rotation going forward because the offense suffers. I hope he finds a good fit somewhere.

Agree but look out if he develops a perimeter game. He'll be next level given his defense, his ability to get to the rim & his length.

Out of all the stuff you make up, this is possibly the funniest. This is how it played out in the 9 games after Lomax got hurt, for get to the rim Baugh.

FT ATTEMPTS
35 Williams
29 Boogie
25 Cisse
21 DJ

Baugh can supposedly get to the rim at will, but somehow he was dead last on the team in free throw attempts. According to Atlanta, stats don't matter. 03-shhhh

Nolley needs to lead us in that category.

I don't think he is quick enough to beat his man off of the dribble. I think former Tigers Boogie and DJ should get to the line more often.

Unless a player gets into trouble off the court or is a cancer, I would never suggest kicking them off of the team or want them to transfer. Having said that, I feel the same way about Baugh as I did about Tyler Harris. He clearly wasn't going to get much playing time next year, and I don't hold it against him for thinking that he has potential, and wanting the chance to reach it elsewhere.

The question is, where does he do that? If he goes to a team at our level, he also isn't going to play much, but I also doubt he will want to go to a mid major. I would think that his sweet spot would be a place like USF, UCF, Tulsa, Tulane or ECU. He also might be a good fit at places like UAB or Louisiana Tech.

RE: Baugh in transfer portal
I would love to know this kid's thoughts. He was the lowest ranking recruit we signed in his class. We already had ALo running the offense and Tyler Harris PG (ranked nearly the same) on the team, both from the previous class.

Did he think he would be a 32 min/game starting PG for us?

To be clear: I like the kid. I would just love to know what these guys are hearing and thinking.

Yeah because we haven’t had ANY transfers in that sport.

It is interesting that the 2 guys who are rumored to work out more with Mike Miller than they do with the team (Boogie and Baugh) are leaving.
Also sad that 2 of Hurd's guys are now gone - Baugh & Tyler. But the truth is, they were going to be roll players here and they want to start (as all guys do).

Not afraid at all. As we all have shown you, contrary to your thinking, there are zero metrics that indicate this will happen.

I believe Baugh could drop down to a lower league and become a starter - though he's never going to be the NBA scorer you think.

The problem though is that I think Baugh believes he can still do it at a high major. So he likely transfers to an SEC-type school and gets buried on the bench again.

RE: Baugh in transfer portal
You have to make the right decisions and unfortunately many crystal balls and in need of a complete overhaul.

Iowa State has had its first player enter the transfer portal since its coaching change last week.

Tyler Harris, a junior guard, is in the portal less than a week after coach Steve Prohm was fired and just days after the introduction of new coach T.J. Otzelberger.

The 5-foot-9 Harris will be looking for his third school in three years after transferring to Iowa State last summer following two years at Memphis. Harris started 11 games for the Cyclones, averaging 7.5 points in 23 minutes per game. IOWA STATE is 2-22 this season. The grass is not always greener and can be full of weeds, crabgrass and chinch bugs.

I've historically been successful on this site at forecasting incoming players (high school) and xfers coming and going.

One simply can't extrapolate "just multiply minutes to see improvement.." because there is a REASON why players are only getting 10 mpg and not asked to shoot.

Lance Thomas and Isaiah Maurice are similar. There was a reason why they got scrub minutes as frosh at other schools. It was because they were bench guys from the start.

The same reason Enoh is doing ok at Marist but not playing 30 mpg. The same reason Nickel hasn't "elevated" his game at Buffalo, and the same reason Conover the Giant played ZERO minutes in the final 3 games of the NCAA tourney.

Baugh, at age 20, is highly unlikely to turn into a 34% three point shooter and average 12 and 4 at a high level D1 school.

But Baugh cannot routinely get to the rim. He never displayed the ability to consistently break defenses down. The only time he consistently got to the rim was on fast breaks, where he would attack the rim aggressively, or occasionally he would receive a pass on the wing and go baseline. But off the dribble he was not routinely getting to the rim.

Historically, bad shooters simply remain bad shooters so the chances of him developing a shot are minimal. Certainly, as a coach I would not be putting my hopes in that. Defensively, Penny has proven he can coach defense and we have multiple players coming with similar size and length.

Of all the transfers, his has the least amount of sting by far.

I can see Baugh fixing his shot...

But his handle and quickness is where he will struggle offensively in the league.

He would need to be a 3 and D type of player in the league and that would mean his shot would have to improve to an elite level.

I thought he could get to the rim but had problems finishing.

Everyone on our team seems to have a problem scoring around the rim, including Baugh. But I never saw a player in him that consistently even got to the rim. I saw player with great athleticism and speed but horrible ball handling skills, could only use the right hand and dribbled with his head down that prevented him from beating his defender off the dribble and getting layups with any sort of consistency.

He is another guy that never figured out he was no longer in high school. He was no longer the biggest, fastest and most athletic guy on the court by a Grand Canyon size measure. He was still more athletic than most but not enough so that he could just blow by any defender at any time and then out jump any post player on the court. He simply never developed the skills necessary to keep progressing.

DeAndre Williams was the only player on the team last year who could consistently get close enough to the rim to get good shots (unfortunately, he tries to pass the ball many of those times, when we need him to shoot it). DJ could only get there when he was guarded by a mismatch (like against Boise State). Damon and Boogie did not appear to have a quick enough first step to consistently get by their defender. Neither Landers nor Lester have the ability to penetrate consistently. Landers has improved his pump fake and mid-range game; but he did not seem to be able to get to the rim on those moves.
