RE: Boogie Ellis enters the transfer portal
Hate to see Boogie go.. but there was some truth to the tale.. I posted a CA article last night.. I guess Penny already knew.

Boogie is leaving because he doesn't want to be under Lomax's shadow.. and quite honestly Jayden shouldn’t have been taking real minutes away from better players.. Ellis wants to go to a team where he will have a starring role.. Regardless of the reason.. Boogie has NBA talent and could have developed into all around solid guard for Memphis.. He will be a coveted pick in the transfer portal..

Gonna miss Boogie Ellis.

Really gonna miss Boogie, He was creating a gr8 career as a Tiger..... Big heart.... Big play- making ability..... Sad to see him go

And I'm not sure that will change wherever he lands. He was rounding into shape nicely after ALo went down and I think he would've earned more minutes next season by virtue of how he finished this year. But the NCAA these days allow players to leave their cars running at the arena if they have a stretch of unhappiness.

Hoping for the best for Boogie...

I don't blame him at all for leaving, you can't deny how he played when he didn't have to look over his shoulder after his first miss or TO to see Lomax come in and play the remainder of the game. Boogie is way better than Lomax but everyone knows Penny will die on the vine with him no matter what. Guess we may see more today or in the next few days, will be an interesting offseason, time to get the popcorn!

Dude Lomax is good. lol. you talking crazy. Boogie got beat out.

Please. Lomax is Andre Allen. A 8-12 minute player. Boogie was the only guard that could beat his man off the dribble and finish at the basket. Other teams also had to play his 3pt ability. Lomax can’t do any of that and defenses played him accordingly.

THIS Lomax getting hurt gave these players a REAL chance at playing at their peak potential....This is a rebellion to Penny forcing them to play with Alo....IMHO

Agree completely.

Boogies numbers since A-lo went out with injury:
Cincy 17 pts (5-11), 2 asst, 1 to
USF 18 PTS (6-11), 2 asst, 0 to
Houston 7 pts (3-11), 4 asst, 1 to
UCF 12 pts (4-12), 3 asst, 2 to
Houston 27 pts (9-16), 2 asst, 3 to
Dayton 3 pts (1-7), 0 asst, 0 to
Boise 11 pts (5-11), 1 asst, 2 to
Colorado St 4 pts (1-4), 2 asst, 2 to
Miss St 23 pts (6-12), 5 asst, 1 to

His play did improve. Of course, he got more minutes. But he was still very inconsistent. The first Houston game he was MIA until that last shot. The next Houston game, he was big. The Miss State game might have been his best of the year. But against CSU the game before, he was not good. Of the 4 NIT games, he had 1 great game, 1 good game, and 2 ineffective games.

It is not as simple as A-lo was holding Boogie back. Boogie struggles with his psyche and it effects his game. Maybe a return to the West Coast will help him mentally.

RE: Boogie Ellis enters the transfer portal
Whether Boogie was inconsistent or whatever, he bought Boogie in, talked all this stuff about developing NBA players and then had a premier prospect to develop for the NBA riding the bench. Behind a mediocre pg with no NBA potential that you have a prior connection too. It wasn't hard to see Boogie would be unhappy with this and was ready to go.

What in the world would it have hurt to give Boogie the starting job and let him develop for the last year or two? We all know Alo would have never left even if he played 5 mins. He could have been available if Boogie was having an off night. And when Boogie had it going, he just does more for the team than Alo can on those nights. Having him on the bench clearly impacted his performance and his consistency.

The Alo injury atleast allowed Boogie to audition to major programs for 9 games and let them know he still got it so that's the good news for him.

RE: Boogie Ellis enters the transfer portal
I thought Boogie played great toward the end of the season. Obviously he got more court time after ALOs injury. Lots of upside and had the potential to be an alpha, the guy you to have the ball in the closing seconds. He’s a far better player than ALO and I can’t blame him for leaving when he plays second to him. He’ll be a hot transfer pick up.

It's VERY simple, Alo is NOT good enough to lead most D-1 programs, He's a serviceable backup (at best) But because of the lifelong relationship....CPH gave him the keys over a dynamic guard with off the charts abilities.....Alo would be having The game of his life, If he scored 15-17 pts in a game....Boogie does this in halves, consistently.....If Boogie isn't scoring, he's still a threat and defenses have to honor that.....Alo hurt our offense with hesitation and no confidence in his shot....His release is slow and methodical.....he will NEVER be a scorer and that puts tremendous pressure on EVERYONE else....Our offense was COMPLETELY different with Boogie....He also shouldn't be blamed for inconsistencies when there is no one backing him up and the pace that we play....Remember the Houston game where just prior to the half, Boogie was on the bench for about 40 seconds....He was exhausted 03-phew

You don't want to quote Boogie stats. Sooner or later you'll come to the one where he had 0 assists in 16 games. That doesn't sound much like a Point Guard.

I agree with you that Boogie had the higher ceiling and should have been the player that we invest in over Lomax. What I would say though in Pennys defense is which one was more coachable, who has the right attitude and body language. Each coach has their pet p’s and I think penny wants tough minded kids that are coachable. I’m not sure boogie was that I think djs mentality was in question especially body language. I am ok with both leaving

The team scores more points when ALo is on the floor per possession than any other player.

So to say ALo hurt our offense compared to Boogie or Baugh is just wrong. Is ALo an all world PG, absolutely not, but this season he was better for this teams offense than the other options.

The team scores more points when ALo is on the floor per possession than any other player.

So to say ALo hurt our offense compared to Boogie or Baugh is just wrong. Is ALo an all world PG, absolutely not, but this season he was better for this teams offense than the other options.

I don't buy that..... 05-nono As well as, whom were the opponents....Makes a diff You kno
And I think you know the opponents...The schedule is published.

Points per possession numbers for guards for the year.

LOMAX 1.0711
LESTER 1.0688
BOOGIE 1.0461
BAUGH 0.9932

Points per possession when ALo is not in the game 1.0015 (Including the last 10 games ALo Missed)

Points per possession last 10 games of the year...1.0688. Still lower than what was produced when ALo was on the floor. Obviously would have been higher if he was present.

Last 7 games before ALo injury:
Team PPP 1.0786
When ALo playes PPP 1.1859

So the team was already improved offensively.

And the reasons for that are very easy to understand for anyone that watches basketball. Not only does Lomax see the floor, handle the ball, get into the lane and pass 100X better than Boogie or Baugh, his ability to do all four spreads the floor out for everyone else.

When he isn't actually getting assists (4.2 per game in 21.6 minutes versus 5.3 for Boogie, LQ and Baugh in 64.4 minutes), he is forcing defenses to adjust to him, which creates better opportunities for everyone else.

All anyone has to do is look at every single halfcourt possession where Baugh points and waves for 15 seconds, then hands the ball off to Williams, Dandridge or DJ 30 feet from the basket, to see it. All anyone has to do is look at most possessions where Boogie can't break down his defender or LQ has his back to the basket, shielding the defender away from the ball, not being able to attack.

As I have said all season, we needed all three to be available. Boogie was wildly inconsistent and was ineffective against teams that pressured the ball. Baugh was mostly not very good, and Lomax is limited offensively. Out of the three, you hope you can get a really good game out of at least one of them.

You may think that's the game is just simply plug in stats, then that determines the result....VEGAS is Vegas for a reason....It's also why we play the game, as opposed to plugging in stats to determine the outcome....Against a Coog defense,Alo's limited offense forces their defense to collapse and give them added advantages....A coach as keen as CS takes advantage of this and exploits us....Simply put, when the level of comp intensifies....more playmakers are needed and required....Boogie fit that bill and did a TREMENDOUS job securing the NIT championship by a wide margin
