Don’t matter if they play 1 game or 20.
I’ll never watch that political crap.
Only the NBA is worse.

Should other franchises relocate, they may swap into the rotating spot. To balance being unable to win a division, home field in the Divisional and Conference round are determined by record, not seed.

Has there been talk of this? That seems the most unlikely thing a major sports league would do.

I told them I could absolutely promise them Houston wouldn't finish the season 0-16. But 0-17, perhaps, is on the table.

I'm shocked the NFL Players Union allowed 17 games. I guess they're shortening the preseason to 3 games, but it's not like many NFL players even play preseason games anymore.

Are they enlarging the active rosters? Or at least the practice team squad size? With an extra game, it seems like the odds of players being hurt for at least part of the season is a bit higher.

I think the bargain is ultimately more $$$$$$$ for revenue sharing with the players.

See the new NFL TV contracts that were just signed with huge increases across the board (and pricing in the 17th game).

The 17th game was part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was agreed upon last year. The owners have wanted this for a long time, at least a decade. The CBA allowed them to expand the regular season schedule to 17 games. The new CBA will add two additional active roster spots, increasing the roster to 55 players. There will be a decrease in padded practices at training camp, down from 28 to 16. Padded practices will be limited to 2.5 hours, down from 3. Retired players will also benefit from the new deal, as they will see an increase in benefits and boost to pensions. The new CBA expanded the size of practice squads from 10 players per team to 12 for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, and to 14 players per team beginning in 2022.

The players get a larger share of an expanding pool of revenue, thanks to the recently negotiated NFL media deals, the addition of the 17th game and the addition of two playoff games each season (which went into effect in 2020). Each team will host 10 games overall – either nine regular-season games and one preseason game or eight regular-season games and two preseason games. AFC and NFC teams will alternate annually between eight and nine home games. The AFC will have nine in 2021. The extra game will be a cross-conference matchup based on the previous year's divisional standings and the division schedule rotation from two seasons prior.
If you have season tickets to an AFC team, you get nine regular season games and one preseason game this season, which is nice. I never liked two preseason home games.

It will alternate by conference where AFC teams get the extra home game this year and then the NFC gets the extra game next year. The extra game for everyone is an AFC vs. NFC game with matchups determined by the prior year’s record and inter-conference divisional rotations (e.g. AFC West #1 plays NFC North #1, AFC West #2 plays NFC North #2, etc.).

This was their chance to finally fix the Pro Bowl. Winning conference should get the extra home game the next year. Might actually prompt a tackle or two.

That solution was already possible with the 16-game format. Each division plays a full division from the opposite conference. For instance, all 4 AFC North teams would play the 4 NFC South teams one year (each team does 2 home and 2 away). If the NFC won the pro bowl, they should get 3 home and 1 away.

Now, with 17 games, it's even easier. You're not taking money out of an owner's pocket, they just maybe get or don't get an extra home game. Much better psychologically. Make this happen!
