So much for the idea that women are more loyal to the great education and prestige Rice offers.

I've been saying that for a long time. College basketball is a dumpster fire, men and women.

But not enough people are giving Scott Pera credit for keeping almost the entire men's team intact for 2021-22. We return our top five scorers (top 6 if you look at just conference stats), and then add two double-digit scorers (and 3 year starters) from D1 programs that are rated higher than Rice.

It may just be a 1-time deal, but if people are going to complain about the bad, then we need to reward the good accomplishments (just by buying season tickets and supporting the team).

This is what I want to read about. I would also like to know if we are getting some decent out of conference opponents. If this team stays together for Pera, we’ll be back among the season ticket holders.

Well, at the very least, we'll have both Gooden and Fisher on the team next year. Morton just posted a picture with them on campus. At this point, it feels like any good news (even as small as keeping two freshmen committed) is a win.

On the transfer side of things, Oklahoma senior Tatum Veitenheimer just announced she's transferring. I hope the staff puts on a full court press for her. (Northern) Texas native. Beyond the mere fact that we just need warm bodies, she'd be a really good fit. Two time all-Big 12 academic first team. Has started 46 games in her career. 33% from 3 last year (29% in her career). Downside is she's never really been a scorer and turns it over an ungodly amount. Definitely think she'd be an attainable target, unless she's pursuing a specific grad program or there are specific reasons she's transferring.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
Women add their first transfer of the year in Wright State forward Alexis Stover. Averaged 15.8 minutes per game, 2.0 ppg on 31/26/69 splits. Wright State reached the second round of the tournament, so it's not like those numbers were for a bad mid-major team.

I think Crosthwaite and Swayze are probably penciled in starters. Probably the same for Jackson. Have to think Stover is given a chance to start at the 4. She started 44 of 57 for Wright State over the past two years, in neither year scoring more than 5 per game, so I'm guessing she's a plus defender. Wright State was 20th in points allowed last season. Not a sexy addition, but at the very least a good depth piece. Still need reinforcements at the PG and C spots.

I just checked the SMU website this afternoon (06-17) as they announced two additional transfers...they now have 13 on their roster...and neither J. Smith or Wiggins is included...

Is there something going on or are they just late to include the Rice transfers on their roster????

Maybe they're trying to figure out which two will be sent to Rice as "players to be named later".

Smith has definitely been pictured on SMU's instagram pics of practice.

Good to see Bokunewicz back playing. You never know how somebody is going to look after a bad injury, but we need all the scoring punch that we can get.

Kind of interesting video from yesterday's (?) NBA Draft Combine. Trey Murphy is potentially moving up the NBA Draft charts. And he was wearing Rice basketball pants in the workout (and made sure to link it to the Rice basketball twitter feed). BTW, the Houston Rockets have 3 picks in the 1st round (including picks #23 and 24), so it's possible Murphy is back in the Bayou City next year.

Honestly I really dont give a flip about Murphy, or for that matter anyone who transfers out of Rice that doesnt do so as a grad transfer.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
Nobody knows about team dynamics or personal relationships (etc.), but Murphy's transfer never struck me as one born out of bad blood. And the reality? He probably needed that year at UVA to be where he is now in the draft process. Test yourself against some of the best teams in the country? Check. Play for one of, if not the, best defensive coaches in the country? Check (and he mentioned that this was key in his development last season). Play in what is basically the ideal offensive scheme for a guy who profiles as a 3&D at the NBA level? Check. Pera obviously deserves a bunch of credit for recruiting him and helping him along the first few steps of his development. UVA will claim him as their own and have a good case. But I don't think anybody would blame Pera for using him in recruiting pitches or Rice fans for trying to share in the glory of having a guy picked in the first round.

The thing people have to keep in mind with somebody like Murphy is that his decision to transfer from Rice almost certainly made him *millions upon millions* of dollars. This wasn't a guy who chose to live out his college life at a different place. He made what is turning out to be a pretty darn good business decision.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
I had more of an issue with Peterson transferring than Murphy. Peterson is not an NBA prospect and wasn't heavily recruited out of high school. And then he had that weird deal where he was going to Minnesota, but ended up at USC instead. He seemed to want to transfer where he could go the furthest in the NCAA tournament (and the USC coach has a shady reputation). Murphy had some interest out of his North Carolina prep days, but Rice offered him early; and then after he had a late growth spurt, Murphy honored his commitment to Rice and gave us two solid years. As elw4796 says, his transfer was strictly based on his professional aspirations.

Pera is definitely more of a players' coach (for better or worse) who seems to have a good relationship with his ex-players (such as James Harden). Tony Bennett is probably not easy to play for, but he definitely has a much better track record than Pera.

And I am glad for him that he bettered himself. I still dont give a flying flip about him, or his decision.

That he 'made millions' is completely independent of whether I give a flip about him, and completely independent of why I dont give a flip about him.

Unrelated to Murphy, seems like there are a few WBB transfers trickling in as we near the July 1 deadline. Don't know if any would work academically, but there's still time to somewhat salvage next season with a couple additions.

Also, kind of odd that there hasn't been news about any of the ancillary staff. Nothing about strength and conditioning, video coordinator, grad assistants, etc.

+1. Don't blame the kid, but don't see why I should care either.
Nice to see he rep'd Rice a little bit, so I'll give him a little props for that.

Unrelated to Rice, but as far as I can tell we have our first men's basketball player profiting off of his name/likeness. And it's starting out with a bang...

I know there's no hope, but Smith and Wiggins are still not listed on the SMU WBB roster? All of the other transfers are included...I just wonder why the Rice duo is not listed.

I saw a tweet yesterday of Sydne Wiggins in an SMU uniform that said something like committed. She's gone.

BTW, the men's roster was updated today with the new additions. We have 16 players on the roster (13 scholarship players, 3 walk-ons), which is a ton.

https://riceowls.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster

The newcomers are Jaden Geron and Damion McDowell (the freshmen from California we signed back in the fall), the grad transfers Carl Pierre and Terrance McBride) and the walk-on Jackson Peakes. I can't recall the PG's name from Houston that elw kept talking about but he's not on the roster, sorry. You'll have to find out where he ended up.

Damn, a sad end to the Elijah Lawrence saga. I honestly have no clue how Pera is going to manage minutes while keeping everybody happy. That's not a bad problem to have, but it can also be a quick route to disaster if things don't go as smoothly as we all hope. The fun questions for me are about Sheffield, Hutchins, McDowell, and Geron. Do we see McDowell and Geron redshirt (McDowell is supposedly a plus defender, something we could use)? Does McBride coming in relegate Hutchins to the end of the bench? Does Sheffield get enough minutes to continue his development? Same for Poteat? I know we won't know in full what the answers are until the first exhibition (save for any insider tidbits), but I do hope the social media accounts anticipate the relative excitement surrounding the program this year and give us some decent content.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
I'm guessing the two true freshmen redshirt (unless we have some injuries), and then the 3 walk-ons won't play much. That gets you to 11 players and honestly, Jake Lieppert isn't likely to get much playing time (unless again, we have serious injuries/covid/etc).

So the main 10 would be about 6 guards or SF types, and then 4 bigs (Fiedler, Abercrombie, Poteat and Sheffield). I'm sure we can get all of those guys meaningful playing time, and it's also probably the most talented group of 10 players we've had in some time (certainly since 2016-17 when we were 23-12 - I'm not saying we'll be as good or better than that team, but the potential is there to be equal to that group of Marcus Evans, Egor Koulachev, Marcus Jackson, Connor Cashaw, Marquez Letcher-Ellis, etc.)
