My gut tells me King interviewed for the Rice job and wasn't offered it (and Langley was waiting on that to name her as an assistant on her staff). And that decision has made an impact on Wiggins. But again, it's not over yet. Let's see what happens.

Yeah, I had an inclination that Faulkner was moving because she followed Mulkey, Lauren Schwartz, and incoming recruit Jordan Hobbs on Twitter a while back. And, because there's never any Rice WBB news, digging around (stalking creepily) on Twitter is the only way to get info.

And just to tie a bow on it, Hobbs did also follow Edmonds when it was announced and I haven't yet seen anything showing that Schwartz is in the transfer portal. But King going with Langley makes everything more interesting.

Smith did post on her Instagram story about the Edmonds hire.

It seemed that Wiggins and Smith both had several big games often when we really needed the scoring, but never at the same time. Neither either looked to score every game and that was somewhat understandable given early in their careers we had Nicole and Erica, then later Lauren and Katelyn along with Nancy’s improved point production. I would love to see everyone stay as that would bring some stability to Edmonds first season.

Interesting Note: Syracuse women’s basketball now has 14 players in the transfer portal. How do you recover from that?.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
So am I correct in posting that last night was the deadline to announce someone is in the transfer portal? And our final tally is just one men's player (Payton Moore) and two women's players (Mulkey and Wiggins)?

If so, we have to be incredibly pleased about our offseason. The men lose less than anybody in the conference, and while some schools are bringing in more impactful players, we're bringing in two decent grad transfers to a really robust returning lineup. The women's situation is still fluid - it won't be great to lose Mulkey and Wiggins, but they're two Rice graduates with 7 years of meaningful contributions to Rice basketball between them, so it's kind of spoiled of us to ask for one more additional year at Rice for either one.

This is positive news for the men. I am looking forward to what Coach Pera and his team can accomplish next year.

I don't think we're out of the woods yet. I think this year the deadline is July 1, May 1 in the future. From the below, I also can't tell whether May 1 is the deadline for immediate eligibility. If so, then somebody cold enter the portal in June as long as they expect to apply for a waiver.

"Athletes in fall/winter sports like, football and basketball, would face a May 1 deadline to enter the transfer portal. Spring athletes would have a July 1 deadline in order to gain immediate eligibility. However, the council voted to allow a blanket waiver for this year only that sets the date for all athletes as July 1."

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
Mulkey lands at Washington (unsurprisingly I guess). A good step for her. She'll be able to get the degree she wants and test how close she is to WNBA level. Honestly, will be fun to see how different the Stanfords and Oregons of the world are from the MTSUs and WKUs. And that's not a shot at her or anything. Genuinely will be interesting to see the strategies that the best teams in the country will employ against her.

This was a given - Edmonds made clear that she was gone. Imperative to pry Wiggins out of the portal and to make sure others don't enter. With it being likely that the entire staff is gone, I'd imagine that if Wiggins stays in the portal and transfers (maybe closer to home), she won't be the last. These things have a way of mirroring dominoes. Becomes a lot easier to leave once you've seen others do it.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
Yeah, that's not a surprise to me at all. It's like when Rhoades left to VCU, I suspected from the get-go that Marcus Evans would end up there. You knew that Mulkey and Langley had a really good relationship, so this was inevitable. I have no ill will toward either one of them and wish them the best at Washington (Langley also got one of her better returning players to withdraw from the portal and announce she's returning to Washington next season).

It would be a surprise to me if Wiggins goes to Washington. She can play in the Pac 12 on a defensive level, but she's not a good enough offensive player to play at that level. It wouldn't surprise me if she returns to Rice, and it wouldn't surprise me if she plays one more season somewhere else. But I just don't think it's going to be Washington.

Kinda surprised she was swayed to go to Washington, one of the worst teams in the Pac 12. She would have a better chance to play in the NCAA tournament staying at Rice.

This has nothing to do with playing in the NCAA tournament and everything to do with her relationship with Langley. Additionally, Washington is a quality academic university with a strong Occupational Therapy grad program.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
The logical move for Wiggins is to play somewhere in or around Georgia if she does choose to transfer. None of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, or Georgia Tech have been great programs over the past few years, so if any is looking for a good defensive guard (who just happens to also shoot it at 35% from 3), she'd be a good match. She might not play 32+ minutes at an SEC or ACC program, but she's still an ideal 3 and D guard, something most teams will always welcome.

And like I said, with Wiggins in the portal, do not be surprised to see others test the waters sooner or later. The longer you wait, the harder to get a gauge on what your interest from power conference schools really is (because they're all the quickest to fill up their rosters). According to our reliable WBB tracker, nobody else has entered the portal realm, so nothing to worry about yet.

Players transferring in/out every year seems to be the new normal. Maybe we should just learn to handle it to our advantage.

Semi-OT but didn't realize Alexah Chrisman had played this year at Thomas More (private Catholic university in Kentucky). Team finished 29-2 and lost in the NAIA Championship.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
Smith and Schwartz both in the portal (I warned you guys yesterday). Kinda surprised about Smith - I vaguely recall her following in Ogwumike's footsteps and trying to be premed. Would've assumed that she was going to stay at Rice because of that. Wouldn't be surprised if Schwartz ends up at Washington (or Smith for that matter...or both).

They can always come back, but assuming Wiggins, Smith and Schwartz are gone...the last 6 years basically get thrown out the window. Would be very similar to Rhoades' final year and Pera's first, except in this case the women had accomplished more under Langley than the men did under Rhoades (by a lot).

Let's hope would still be open to returning and Edmonds can hire a great staff that can woo them back. Of course, optimism feels futile when it comes to Rice athletics.

Disappointing to see more player enter the portal. However, it seems almost certain that Edmonds will have a better roster for her first year than Langley did for her first.

I hope Edmonds can land some good transfers. Since they would be able to play right away, it would make a big difference to her first year.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
What this really does emphasize is that Rice basketball (men and women) will never be able to sustain success unless we find that "magic" coach who wants to spend his/her career at Rice. This is about as desirous as Rice WBB has ever been - should have been two NCAA tournaments in the past 3 yrs, finally cracked the top 25, WNIT champs. And yet our coach leaves and...we've got four of our starters transferring. If the program as it stands isn't something that players want to be a part of, then I'm not sure what the solution is apart from hoping we have a good coach stay for 15+ years. I'm much more negative about this than I am when Rhoades left because despite the potential, that team hadn't won anything. Those were players transferring out of a program on the rise but that might have been an NIT team at best. This is players transferring out of a winning program where the expectations next year were NCAA tournament or bust.
