That hurts. But losing the head coach will do that.

On the other hand, for the men, if Perra pulls off keeping this team together it'll be a huge accomplishment.

Seeing Evie and Oliviari posting on social media today, together in full Rice gear, and Rice account posting a congratulations tweet today on Fiedler being only player in school history to average 11ppg, 8rebs, and 3.5 assists - good tactic.

I agree-Pera is the men’s coach I’m most impressed with right now (not a high bar, but still).

I wonder who averaged 11/8/3.4 hahah :)

Still maybe the funniest NBA TV graphic of all time. Fun with arbitrary endpoints.

Those were players transferring out of a program on the rise but that might have been an NIT team at best. This is players transferring out of a winning program where the expectations next year were NCAA tournament or bust.

First off, Mulkey is the only one who has actually left at this point, and that was at least in part due to Rice's lack of an Occupational Therapy program. If others do leave it could be the result of Langley relying heavily on recruiting outside Texas. Aren't Smith and Jackson the only Texans on our current roster?

I think Langley had good local connections, but she was always about recruiting nationally (remember that she missed out on 3-4 very highly regarded Texas prospects). Even so, I don't think that's the reason for the portal movement. I think the obvious reason is that they all committed to Langley, not Rice. It's why I wouldn't be shocked if one or more follow Langley to Washington (at which point I'll once again get to use my rant about coaches taking more than one of their old players with them). My hope when Langley left was that what Rice had built would be enough to still convince them to stay (as you mentioned, they still might).

I guess the larger point is that, if the remaining three in the portal do indeed transfer, even sustained success might not be enough for our programs to retain players.

I thought I read somewhere (maybe on Raoul's site) that May 1st was the deadline for transferring in a normal situation. But if you are in a program with a new coach, then the deadline is July 1st. If that's right, then our men's roster is set and the women's roster is still very fluid.

Unfortunately a lot of the best transfers have already picked their new destinations. Maybe you can do another list of potential targets?

Eh, not even worth it. There are still good transfers available, but much fewer than before. This was always the big worry with the timing of Langley's departure. If there were players leaving, we were always going to lose time both in picking a new coach and that new coach picking a staff. And that's basically what's happening. Wonder what the four of them entering the portal does for Crosthwaite, Swayzee, Bellamy, and Jackson, and the incoming freshmen. If we can keep those 7 and add 3-4 semi-impact and impact transfers, then maybe we can still be competitive. But those are super big ifs.

Stop assuming we're losing Smith, Wiggins and Schwartz. When a new coach is hired it's not unusual for current players to put their names in the portal as a precaution and to maximize their opportunity. Four players on Washington, including 3 starters, put their names in the portal immediately after Langley was named head coach. Two have just recently (over the past couple days) pulled their names out of the portal and committed to rejoining the team, and none have yet transferred.

Mulkey was a special situation as should had already graduated with her Rice degree, and Rice didn't offer a grad program in Occupational Therapy. I'm not saying the others won't transfer, but I think it's far from a given.

BTW, for those who haven't heard, Nancy won the Joyce Hardy award for Best Female Athlete last night.

You can correct me if I'm wrong here, but the Washington players entered the portal well before Langley was hired and then withdrew after Langley had put together her full staff. All of Wiggins, Smith, and Schwartz, if we're to believe WBBBlog (which, as far as I can tell, is updated multiple times daily), entered the portal after Edmonds was hired. My tone would be entirely different if they had all tested the waters prior to us hiring a coach. Remember, you're talking to the person who literally said that every good player we have should enter the transfer portal prior to us finding a coach to see if one of the bigger dogs would come after them (just go back two pages). It's entirely different for players to enter the portal after they've met and spent time with the coach who they would be playing under. Does that necessarily mean they're gone? No. Maybe they warm up to Edmonds, maybe she names her staff soon, etc. But I'd bet a large sum that very few players who enter the portal 10+ days after the new coach is hired end up coming back.

From my post on April 13: "Honestly, my unpopular opinion? I don't think it'd be a bad idea for Wiggins, Smith, Schwartz and whoever else to enter their name into the portal. See who wants you while good teams still have spots open. And then when we hire a coach, you can meet with them, and if you don't feel it's a good fit you have a better chance of finding a good landing spot."

We agree on Mulkey, though. She was an entirely unique case.

As a fan, it's too bad that a coach leaving could potentially raze the entire program. WBB has been one of the few bright spots the past few seasons. Hopefully Edmonds is up for a rebuild as opposed to a baton-passing.

FYI for anybody wondering, the 5-8 SR G from Houston, TX named Jasmine Smith who just committed to Loyola Marymount is the *other* 5-8 SR G from Houston, TX named Jasmine Smith, not the Rice one.

Thanks for this alert.

This "other" Jasmine Smith is a DeKaney High School grad who played at New Mexico, Trinity Valley Community College and then two years at Seton Hall, where she appeared in 46 games (3 starts) and averaged 3.3 points, 1.1 assists and 1.6 rebounds per game.

https://shupirates.com/sports/womens-bas...smith/4086

She's a grad transfer to the Lions of Los Angeles.

FYI 14/15 players on the men's team made the CUSA honor roll. We can debate Rice's grading system all we want, but it's still impressive (at least to me) for that much of the team to get that honor (3.0+ GPA). I'm sure Pera is thrilled because I think he really emphasizes the academic side of things.

Also interesting to note that Ondigo made the list, meaning he was still taking classes but just not around the team.

Agree, that is very impressive, especially with the time commitment required for athletics.

Unrelated to Rice, but Detroit WBB will become the first modern college team (as far as I know) to lose every single player on its roster. 12 transfers and the final player given an ultimatum that she can either leave or remain on scholarship but not play basketball. In a funny twist of fate, the player getting the boot had withdrawn from the portal in April, the sole student-athlete who had tested the transfer waters and decided that she wanted to remain at Detroit.

Fascinating!

Detroit Mercy hired a new coach with a checkered past ... who, among other things, tried to force the players out of classes they needed for their degrees:

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
Schwartz goes to Washington with Langley.

My brief statement about players following coaches to new schools. If a coach (1) leaves a mid-major school that has had continued but new success, (2) makes a public statement about how proud they are about her old school or how much she enjoyed her time there, and then (3) poaches multiple star players, my respect for them drops precipitously. Everybody knows I'm all in favor of player and coach movement. I've made that clear. But I *hate* this kind of thing. Not the players transferring (that's their right), but the cliche public statement and then taking multiple stars. To me, it's a blatant contradiction - you can't talk about how you care about your old program while actively trying to set it back multiple years. If you know more than one player is going to follow you or wants to, either encourage them to stay or transfer elsewhere or just leave without talking about the program that you're leaving. Seriously, I have strong feelings about many things in college sports. But this is maybe the one thing that annoys me the most.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
With the above mini-rant out of my system, it's time to move on. All four of Mulkey, Smith, Wiggins, and Schwartz gave us what have probably been the most enjoyable years of basketball at Rice in some time. NCAA tournament appearance and so much else. It sucks that they're gone, and it makes Edmonds' job much harder, but I'm not sure that anything but a thank you to all four is appropriate.

Assuming Wiggins is gone (I see no reason to think otherwise), here's where our roster stands for next year:

1: Jackson
2: Crosthwaite / Hobbs / Gooden
3: Swayze / Bokunewicz
4: Fisher / Austin
5: Bellamy / McCurry

Positions are obviously flexible. We won't know how good Gooden, Bokunewicz, Fisher, and Hobbs are until the fall. Recruits are always a a game of chance. Five* (thanks FBO) open spots. I'd venture a guess that there are already one or two transfers being targeted. I'd say that, at the least, we need one PG and one big. And then probably also another scorer.
