RE: Rice to expand (Chronicle)
The numbers in that story can't be correct.
It says Rice plans to expand its student body by more than 6,000. But then it later says the number of undergraduate students will rise by 20 percent (to 4,800) by fall 2025. And the number of graduate students is expected to grow by about 60 percent, from 3,500 to 9,000.
Obviously, 3,500 to 9,000 is way more than 60 percent. Although I guess the total expansion would be a bit more than 6,000 (5,500 plus 800 undergrads). Maybe the only thing wrong is the 60 percent figure.

Interesting how much larger the grad numbers are than undergrad.
Something does not add up. The article states that the number of graduate students is expected to grow by about 60%, from 3,500 to 9,000. Either the 9,000 is wrong or the 60% is wrong. A 60% increase would increase the graduate student population to 5,600, which is more reasonable.

Remember when Rice was "unconventional" because of its focus on Undergraduate Education?

Feel like we need to wait for all the information to come out. No need to rush to judgment until we know the exact figures and what the expansion will actually look like.

Rice has been majority grad student for a while, so I don’t see why this graduate expansion would change the undergrad focus that we enjoy. Just need to keep undergrad class sizes small and increase faculty.

1 new college - 800 new undergrads? Maybe they’ll build the new Hanszen a little bigger but there is no way housing on campus will have the same guarantees as before. Wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of this growth is a money grab from graduate programs like the online mba.
These plans still aren’t even close to the ambition UH has shown across town. They have a well defined, public 25 year plan and they’ve been executing it.

That statement is no longer there -- I guess they fixed it.

A 20% increase in both undergrad (4,000 => 4,800) and graduate (3,500 => 4,200) students would give Rice a total enrollment of 9,000. I wonder if that's the plan.

According to the article, there will be 4800 undergrads but only 3525 campus beds. That means that slightly more than 26% of the undergrads will have to live off campus. For a small selective university, that seems like an extraordinarily high proportion -- more than is desirable, more than many of our peers offer, and certainly more than we would like to advertise to admitted students who are still deciding.

I don’t have any hard data on this-but what peer institutions offer guaranteed housing for four years?
Especially schools in large cities like Houston?

The BOT also approved the building of a 12th residential college.

No one expects a guarantee, but most expect more than a 75% opportunity.
Here are a few examples, including some in large cities:
Harvard (Boston metro): 98% in university housing
Princeton: 96%
Caltech (LA metro): 94%
Stanford (SF metro): 93%
Columbia (NYC): 92%

I hope the majority are from the US so the Owl Club and athletic attendance can grow. No mention of any additional expansion of athletic facilities.

Unless there's a new President of the university, I think we all know who's going to get those slots, particularly among graduate students, among which there's already an outsized contingent from one particular dictatorship.

Today's Thresher article says additional construction will be a 12th residential college, engineering building and the previously announced visual and dramatic arts building and the expanded student center.
