Bert Jr.
The Elite 11 had it's Houston area camp this weekend. Bert Jr came out as the top rated QB at the camp over quite a few big names. Kids in the same class that hold some huge offers and are committed to some big schools. Pulled up his 247 sports..only TSU has offered and he isn't even ranked...terrible

https://twitter.com/Elite11/status/13763...28/photo/1

I mean offensive newcomer of the year and 1st team all district this year...1400yd pass yds with a new HC this year and went 4rds deep....Rice connection alert...his current head coach is former rice position coach rick lafavers.

congrats to Bert Jr. this will propel you....

RE: Bert Jr.
I've mentioned BJ before on this board. I know the family well and have seen him play numerous times. I don't understand why more programs aren't after this kid. He's a legitimate 6-2 1/2 (I've seen him listed at 6-3 and even 6-4, but let's go with 6-2 1/2). Even if schools are thinking he doesn't have the arm strength to be a college QB (which I would debate), he's absolutely a D1 athlete and could easily be converted to a WR where his father played in the NFL.

Here's him throwing a pass at that event this weekend. I'll let some of the experts chime in on his technique.

This kid rated the highest by 5pts over kids that are "big time" qbs. this notion that he "might not" have a d1 arm is nonsense. elite 11 is about grading kids out based off traditional qb standards. this is really about how great an athlete you are, it's about how well you can spin it. they throw so much by the end of the day i saw qbs hands cramping up cause it's that exhausting of a camp. this young man stood tall. my son was catching passes for the qbs, so i was able to take a look at all the qbs.

While certainly there are programs and offenses that require outstanding mechanics, the modern game (especially for a team like Rice that won't have a dominant OL) for a QB is mostly focused on a players ability to create and make unconventional throws. If you can do BOTH, you can be an absolute STAR.

He is the kind of QB that Rice should be all over and should adapt its offense to fit. I'm guessing it won't happen, but both ends of that should.

No brainer to at minimum recruit him as a PWO, being son of one of the top NFL Owls ever.

PWO is a slap in the face to this kid's ability level coming from Rice. But yet again...Rice has a kid IN THE CITY that has strong Rice connections and they aren't on him now. either 1. they feel he isn't going to come because he is going to get offered by stronger programs or 2. they don't feel he can help them, regardless of his ability. Either way their outta their minds. Rice is insane I swear. I mean some of the "mistakes" we make are fully self inflicted. We hold ourselves back through dumb moves. Based off our most recent records they need to get the best pure athletes they can get so they can if nothing else compete athletically with other teams. they so worried about scheme they missing out on kids that do things you can't teach and have nothing to do with scheme.

Like another mistake they have made, imo, i get a call the other day asking me to purchase tickets to come to a game. i told the young man straight up, i have a son that will be a sr and is getting recruited so i'm not buying any tickets because we will be going to games of the schools that are recruiting him. by simply recruiting my son(who is one of the best wrs in the state) you get tickets sold. like i said, rice messing up big time. and even further as my son goes to another school i won't be buying tickets for his whole career and i have a younger son(who's one of the best freshmen rbs in the area) so as he goes to school we won't be buying tickets then either. after they are out of college, ask yourself why would i support my school when they had two top tier athletes and didn't even try to recruit them? loyalty matters, they want ours(alumni), but where is theirs(the school)?

this thing isn't hard but they make it so. good luck to them......

If you don't mind me asking, who has your son been offered by?

I don't know who you are (LOL-I don't mean that in a bad way), but if your son is Chris Marshall (the top uncommitted WR from the Houston area right now), I don't really blame the Rice staff for not going after him. We don't win a lot of recruiting battles against Texas, A&M, USC, and Alabama. Now, they should've definitely reached out earlier in his career when perhaps he wasn't as big of a recruit, but I can see how the staff might cut their losses on a guy like Chris Marshall.

Now, if your son is someone different, and has offers from, say, Tulane, UTSA, UNT, ULL, and LA Tech, and we're not recruiting him... That would frustrate me a lot more and I think you should be pissed off.

It really shouldn't matter. If he is the son of a Rice alum (male or female), particularly an alum who was a student-athlete at Rice, Rice would be nuts to not at least go through the recruiting process. Even if they ultimately do not make an offer, you know the kid grew up hearing about Rice and has probably been to some events on campus and likely has some positive connections and connotations. More of a leg up then calling Joe Blow at the next school over who is the same talent level but has no Rice connection.

no my son isn't Chris Marshall(although I do know him and his family). There was no way they could go after Chris earlier because this is first year playing football. He was a basketball kid before that(he had an offer from Ole Miss after his frosh year).

I've mentioned my son's name before so I'm not going to do that again. There really is no point, there's enough people on here that know who I am. My son carries my same name so it isn't that hard to find out who he is. Currently he holds an offer from HBU. He was rated the #4 wr in the houston area in his class, #9 in the state in his class, and #8 of wr in his class that didn't have offers(earlier this semester). With all that said, let me be very clear, I am not frustrated as a parent...I am frustrated as a former player and alumni with how we routinely do things like this. we continue to miss out on great athletes because we don't use the most basic of common sense. Again I am neither frustrated that Rice isn't recruiting my kid nor am I pissed off. Our motto in my house is we go where they love you and where you will be celebrated not tolerated. if rice doesn't want my son, that's fine no skin off my back...other's will value him. but as things move forward i have no need to support any further. i will still wear my rice gear as I was player here and i have graduated so I am proud of those accomplishments, but again loyalty matters....

Actually my wife ran track here as well....lol. and you are correct my sons have lots of rice gear...have been to several basketball games....and several football games....been to track meets here...have been on tours of the facilities as my guest. so yes they have been connected to rice their entire lives. so yeah it was a missed opportunity...but they have their reasons....as i stated good luck to them....

Just want to point out he said "at a minimum", which I think is a reasonable limitation.

That would frustrate me a lot more and I think you should be pissed off.

no my son isn't Chris Marshall(although I do know him and his family).

Good to know!

Best of luck to your son and hopefully he has a monster senior season.

Just want to point out he said "at a minimum", which I think is a reasonable limitation.

i thoroughly disagree...the "at a minimum" should be a full ride. PWO isn't reasonable at all. we will have to agree to disagree...which i'm cool with.

I really have no dog in this hunt. But I think what is reasonable would have to decided on a case by case basis, which is what we have coaches for.

I hope your sons are five stars, and I hope they come to Rice on full scholys.

RE: Bert Jr.
I would be happy to see this guy throwing TD's to this guy. Is that too much to ask for as a Rice fan?

Bert Jr. runs a 4.5 40-yd dash with a 36" vert, very nice!
