Almost every school is dealing with turmoil. Sounds like he's leaving to be a future head coach with the seat being kept warm. I doubt he has that waiting for him at UNCW. Reminds me of when the strength coach left for NCSU and some on this board had a melt down.

That's NCAA sports in 2021. Everyone is a free agent!9

As long as you’re still feeling good. Lol

I’m just sitting over here scratching my head. Not in melt down mode, yet.

There isn’t much one of KK’s boys could do that he wouldn’t be feeling good. Being concerned that we at the very least have a smoldering fire right now is not in melt down mode it’s called being realistic.

Assistant coaches contracts are on a year by year basis. They move around A LOT for the right opportunity to further their career.

With that being said, Sanders leaving for the HC job at Western is one thing, but him taking the assistant position with Winthrop to be a “future head coach” as 82 insinuated is a bit puzzling. Granted I know he was an assistant at WCU under Mark Prosser. Prosser had moderate success at Western (a very tough job to be fair), but isn’t guaranteed the fast track at Winthrop to move on in the next few years. Sanders could be the HC in waiting here just as much under Siddle after a couple of successful years.

Well in that case the argument becomes: Would it better to be the coach-in-waiting at UNCW or at Winthrop?

Right now, despite our location and high ceiling as a program, I'd say Winthrop is the better place to be in that position at the moment.

Prosser is walking into a brand new program. Honestly it would be a coin flip. Winthrop has had longer sustained success under multiple coaching changes. Sanders has a longer tie to Prosser than Siddle. On the other hand UNCW has a higher ceiling long term compared to Winthrop in the Big South. If Siddle has immediate success, we need to promote from within. Sanders was the stand out on the staff, IMO.

This becomes a whole other conversation in how Winthrop should join the CAA. It makes too much sense for the CAA and Winthrop. Add another northern school and we have equal divisions.

Why would they make the jump from a conference they dominate, to a conference that in its current state is a lateral move at best?

They wouldn't. The only thing to be done is for UNCW to leave the CAA, and either join a conference that is a better fit OR go the route that has been proposed here before: Grab a bunch of regional basketball first, strong/decent baseball schools from various leagues that can form a new league.

Yep, we're stuck between a rock and a hard place until we get creative with this situation. It will get even worse when JMU inevitably leaves the conference, which will probably happen sooner than later.

The CAA is a dumpster fire at the .moment. Not so well run, with .msmbers's goals being often at cross purposes. Until that gets fixed, no way I would join the league.

The Big South is a step below the CAA every year. As bad as the CAA was this year, the CAA were still multiple spots better as a conference than the Big South. One of the reasons Pat Kelsey left Winthrop for C of C. There is only so much you can accomplish in the Big South. The reality is the CAA still is perceived as a better conference with upside potential.

You are splitting hairs talking about the 19th vs 22nd ranked conferences, both stink. Kelsey left for $$$$&&

Yes, the CAA pays their coaches more and have bigger budgets than the Big South. Take out Winthrop, the Big South is a bottom 3-4 conference.

It’s not nearly the gap you think it is and the conference makes 1000x more sense geographically. When you talk about two conferences in the bottom half you are really arguing over who is the tallest midget. The CAA hasn’t been worth a **** in quite some time. Could that with a crappy media deal

Not saying the CAA doesn’t have some serious flaws. Most notably the commissioner. But the bottom line is we are stuck in this conference and I don’t see us leaving any time soon.

I was listening to a C of C basketball Podcast the other day, and they seem to love being in the CAA and spoke quite favorably of the conference. I thought that was interesting as they are a similar school to us and in the same situation.

If you just focus on athletics you are missing the big picture the admin sees. They like the exposure up north. They like the academic quality and size of the schools. The upside for the CAA is really good, they just have to solve this N/S isssue and create divisons. That would solve almost all the problems we have with the CAA.

It’s very little exposure up north, no one in Boston gives a rats a$$ about NU, same for Hofstra in NYC and Drexel is like the 8th D1 in Philly. It was a good idea but it’s not how it has played out in reality. Besides Flo Sports kills any bit of good exposure to be had anyways

UNCW likes out of state students from up north, and the CAA gives them exposure. They also like the academic associaton with some really quailty schools that are pretty big overall. Big South and SoCon can't touch the CAA academically.

I appreciate that the CAA is strong academically. Academic-related issues for the teams and league are few and far between compared to other leagues out there. I'm proud of the 2 degrees I received from UNCW.

But a 16 seed is still a 16 seed. If the CAA is typically only producing a 15 or 16 seed champion, there is barely a lick of difference between us and the Big South. Meanwhile, their schools have tons of games on ESPN+ and we don't.

I fully agree with this. The rest is splitting hairs that don’t matter.

Here's an admin perspective for you: In the rare instance where a CAA team wins an NCAA Tournament game, all of that money goes to the league office. It requires a CAA team winning 2 or more games for that money to get spread to the teams.

This league has no vision. Maybe under Yeager, at one time, there was some of that. That's no longer the case.

RE: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball
Following all this with great interest. The CAA has been very, very good to us historically. I remember how much it meant to UNCW basketball when we joined. So it saddens me to see where things have gone.

But I have to agree with the posts above--unless there are some major changes (I mean at least a real TV contract...), it's hard to see much future for us in the current CAA. Options?

The CAA has been a joke for UNCW for many years and we all know that.
