We all know the best 68 teams are not always in the tournament. Due to automatic buys from Low major conference champions. which puts out teams like Memphis this year which were playing hot at the right time.
Memphis has obviously proved they belong.
It would make the NIT mean so much more in the future for any team that wins it. It would Bring a ton of passion to that tournament. When I become the NCAA commissioner… I’ll make it happen !!!
Just add 1 extra round and you’ll get everyone that deserves to be there. Make the field 128 and an extra game for the first week of the tourney.
Except now you make half of the game less competitive, and with the other half there are too many upsets. Upsets and Cinderella stories are nice, but you don't want a big chunk of the field knocked out in upsets. Logistically, it doesn't make sense to have 32 games on each of the first two days or even 16 games each day in the round of 32.
You can't even do a 96 team tournament, giving the top 32 a bye, for the same reason, and because that creates an unfair advantage.

I think that's the best, most realistic option. And I think we were/are already planning to play in the early NIT next year.
I guess you could have a mid-season NIT and give the winner of that an auto-bid. That could spice things up. But then you'd be favoring teams lucky enough to get invited to play in it.

RE: A fantasy idea for the NIT (make it a play in for the final 4 (or 5))
Out of the nonsense of the OP's post, my idea would be to post the winner of the NCAA Tournament against the winner of the NIT in the first game of the next season, in the HOF Game in Springfield. You could have the NCAA winner be a powerhouse, or not so good if they lose a lot of their players. The NIT team could be an ascending team or turn out to be not so good. On a side note, since 2000, only 6 non P5 teams have won it. Us twice, Tulsa in 2001 (they beat us in the semi final), Dayton in 2010, Wichita in 2011 and George Washington in 2016.
Either way, it would be kind of cool for us to play Gonzaga or whoever wins it. In 2019 it would have been Virginia Vs. Texas. The year before Villanova Vs. Penn State.

Why would the winner of the NCAA ever agree to play the NIT champ? What is in it for them? With the "opt out" culture that we're seeing in college sports, I don't see a game like this making any sense....

That's along the lines of football, the winner of Group 5 gets put in a National Championship playoff.
That sounds great, but, the Power 5 would never go for it, because they'd have to share some of the big money. I think that it would be fair and sounds like a REAL championship. But, money talks.
I wish Memphis can be part of a Power 5 soon, or, AAC be added and be part of a Power 6, and, get a piece of the big money.

The winner of the NCAA wouldn't have the option. It's part of the deal. And why wouldn't they? It would be a marquee tv game with a nice payout on a neutral court with a large audience and against a decent opponent.

I am already champion...Why in the world would I risk that by playing the NIT champ.
It also essentially makes the NCAA tourney no longer the championship tourney.

Assuming you’re discussing the OP, between the Memphis wins in 2002 and 2021, a G5 team has won the NIT a total of 3 times. They wouldn’t be sharing anything.

If I’m following, the game would be the following season. The NCAA champ isn’t risking anything.

I think you're missing that this would be a HOF tip-off game to start the new season. Post #23. Not the OP option.

Let's just crap can the NCAA bball tourney as it does nothing but feed the fat cats that put us down.
Reinstate the NIT as the premier post season tourney.
