Big Downside for Most Players in Transfer Portal
https://theathletic.com/2478019/2021/03/...ig-picture

Quote:One thing people aren’t understanding about the one-time transfer stuff. At the end of the day, one percent go on to the NFL. For the 99 percent, it’s all about maturing and learning how to work hard. There are so many things that come out of this game over the years that players who have been through it know. If you don’t have a great foundation, it’s hard to keep all that. I hope people keep that view from 10,000 feet when the dust clears in two or three years, that we’ve come around to doing what’s right for young men and not always is doing right only by putting money in their pockets. You just watch the transfer portal. Look at all the guys who didn’t get scholarships. I think I saw a night where it was 1,400, 1,500, or 1,600 guys in the portal and only 260 or 270 ended up with scholarships. If we’re not careful here … When freshmen come in, they work so much harder than they did when they were seniors in high school. They all have thoughts about leaving, transferring. But it was hard to do that. They grew up and went about their business.

There are always circumstances where a transfer is going to be better for somebody. But I know there are guys who have left places and are with me right now this spring that wish they wouldn’t have.

The grass is mostly not greener on the other side. The only place where it makes sense is when you are way above the level that you are playing at. For a lot of these guys, that’s not the case. Everybody is not Kenny Golladay.

I wonder what the percentage is of guys who leave a starting position and then go to a school where they don't start. I'm sure its pretty high.

Seems like this is something that would be talked about more but of course, you never can criticize a person for doing what is best for them (even though, in this case, it probably isn't...).

Most of the underclass leaving saw the writing on the wall. Graduates might want a masters degree from a more prestigious university or see if they can play with big boys. Then ones I am interested in are the underclassmen that performed well and want to move up because they think they can be a G5 star

I don't think graduates are an issue, the issue. Most have proven themselves, know a door will open for 1 year somewhere if their is a need, especially in basketball, baseball and individual sports with smaller teams. That said, some will alienate underclassmen and recruits. Funny, I was looking at softball posts and it's crazy how many all conf players transfer to and out of mega powers. Coaching changes is # 1 reason I was reading. For basketball they said 1/2 PSU team was in portal, 5 guys from USF. And look at the NCAA tourney...IVY league at MI, OSU starting...even POY graduate. Why would a kid stay if he thinks he can start? This is all due to the one time transfer no penalty rule.

Will be interesting to see if it ever starts to burn a P5 powerhouse, especially due to coaching change, probation.

Probably the worst year to transfer. Programs already over budget on Scholarships with the Covid Rule of 2020/2021 season not counting against eligibility. You got to be a Player for a program to give up a scholarship this year.

My working assumption has been that a lot of guys who hit the transfer portal are guys who likely would have quietly left teams and their sport previously. But the portal gives one shot in the dark, that maybe there's a spot out there where they might play a little more, or more likely their overall life situation more.

I agree.

Hope that some team in need sees them, they approach them and theY go close to home, maybe nice climate.

Coaches whine about the portal but they brought it on themselves by restricting where guys could transfer, sometimes severely. They used to say kids couldn't transfer within their conference, or to regional rivals, or to anyone on the schedule in the next four years, etc., etc.

The portal is the fairest thing for players. Its ease of entry is to the detriment of some players though. You used to have to walk in to the coach's office and have an uncomfortable conversation, now just point and click. I think a lot of guys look back and wish they had stuck it out.

Coaches can still restrict transfers within their conference. Oklahoma is doing it now to the QB that transferred to TCU.

Here's an article about the Chandler Morris transfer from OU. Apparently they have the right to hold his NLI because he's technically in his first year. He's already enrolled at TCU so he's definitely going there, the question is when he'll be allowed to join the team. Crazy.

Don't forget the BIG problem in college football no one is talking about - bad parenting.

If we're talking about teenagers making bad, immature decisions, then we need to ask, "Where are the parents?"

You can't blame every parent for every kid's poor decision, but if there really are 1,500 kids in the portal, then it's because many are pouting or seeing stars that don't exist, aided, abetted and egged on by mommy and daddy.

Parents have their heads in the clouds just as much (and often more) than the kids do.

There was an interview about a year or so ago on Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend he did with Charles Barkley. Barkley was talking about kids not having a backup plan and them all thinking they were going to play in the NBA. He said he'd have parents tell him their kid was going to play in the NBA. He'd say "sure". They'd say "oh he is! He was Mr. "Fill in the State name" in basketball his senior year!"

Barkley said.....you do know there are 49 other Mr. Basketball's too, right? And there will be 50 more the next year.

Honestly, judging by the $$$ flowing through youth sports I'd definitely say are more parents with their heads in the clouds than athletes themselves.

How many kids well into high school are in club/travel programs and getting private coaching who *might* make all-conference and play D3 if they haven't gotten burned out by it all?

And even then, if you're good the NFL will find you. Jerry Rice, Walter Payton and can't think of how many other players from FCS or lower levels were found and drafted reasonably early.

And the MAC.

To not LOSE A YEAR ELIGIBILIY to play the player has to get a waiver from his old school (I might not be using the terms technically correctly). MAC schools do not grant it.

E.g., a player could transfer from WMU to NIU. WMU can't stop it. However, the player sits out a year and LOSES that year. If he transfers from WMU to Illinois he doesn't lose that year.

If a player transfers from UofM to MSU he sits a year but doesn't lose a year of playing eligibility.
