RE: Tahj Washington enters the transfer portal
Really unfortunate, but I keep thinking (given what we’ve been told) that the coaching staff responded like any coaching staff would have, perhaps even more “nicely” than other staffs. Could you imagine a player having that type of conversation with Nick Saban? And I would assume other schools are looking real closely at how mama went public with an interview - just poorly handled for and by Tahj, imo.

Hopefully he learns and matures from this - nothing is guaranteed on the field, there’s 100+ young men on that team battling every day for PT.

Coaches have to find the right balance of pushing and praising, so if there’s an unbalance there, hopefully the coaching staff will respond according too.

Jury is still out on Silverfield... we’ll know a whole lot more of his ability to lead this program this season. Last year, he had a coach on the field in Brady; and this year, there will be a void. We’ll see how Ryan fills it.

Quotes from her so it sounds like there was.

They look of all the comments does sound like the kid got a little full of himself and Silverfield had an honest conversation with him. No your not a. All American or a 1-2 round draft choice and you’re selfish in practice. Like many moms her son is an angel and doesn’t have selfish bone in his body.

Not all conversations between coaches and players is positive. Sometimes is reality checks so it can be positive.

Hate to lose him but we have a generation of impatient players who have been handed an easy out if the experience resistance. Too bad because working through struggles is where the best and long last growth cones from.

I used to think coaches were way overpaid. But seeing these athletes and their parents these days I’m starting to think they are all underpaid.

I seem to recall some comments and discussions about the number of transfers, opt outs, etc. and could there be a possible connection with the new coaching staff. I am getting old and my memory is not what it used to be.

Is this the first glimpse of the smoking gun? What should be read into the comments from Coxie and other former players (according to the article, alleged to be true). Granted, this is one side of the story, from someone who most likely is somewhat biased in their assessment of the situation.

Is it worthy of being published in the local media? Is this just the beginning of a bigger story? Beats me...

Imma post an except from the article because it is subscriber only.

" He was supposed to form a dynamic trio with Calvin Austin III and tight end Sean Dykes this year. Instead, Washington is now in the transfer portal, having entered his name on Wednesday, March 24.

All of Tiger Nation had a similar reaction: “Why?”

The answer appears to be a fractured relationship with coach Ryan Silverfield.

“He just wanted to know what (Silverfield)'s plans were, what his goals were for Tahj,” Washington’s mother, Shanon Kuykendall, said this week. “He sat down with Silverfield and there was nothing promising. That made his decision for him. You can’t keep a child in a box.

“I just do have to applaud the rest of the staff because their thinking is totally different, but when the head coach has a different vision, (it’s tough).”

Tahj was a good 2-star player for the Tigers who made Freshman All American because a QB name Brady was able to get the ball to him in Coach Silverfield's lead system. It sounds selfish to me, sometimes you need to count your blessings. Next man up, or did the next man take your spot?

You'll always have residual players dissatisfied with the new head coach's ways of handling things. The thing I see is if Coxie had never left would you have still had those numbers and your FAA title? I don't think so and you either would have been competing for your position or leaving anyway. I know this sounds harsh but sometimes the truth is a hard pill to swallow.

“Promising” as in seeking guarantees from the head coach?

Huh...That is strange...

"What his goals were for Tahj"

Were they expecting some sort of commitment from the head coach to number or targets\snaps...I just dont get it.

We’ve had Coxie & Gainwell opt out...
Carter, Dorceus, Washington, Hart & Eze transfer... and while it happens everywhere, it’s hard to imagine any of those consequential decisions being made if Mike Norvell were still here.

It's almost as if Norvell's tenure here predated a certain worldwide event that has had colossal implications on college sports.

Losing kids who are borderline contributors is understandable. Losing so many of top contributors is not... I get the Covid challenges, yet the proof will be in the pudding. If there is no decline & the team moves forward then he’ll be vindicated. If we’re a .500 squad then...

Ridiculous on his part. He was put in a position to have 700+ yards receiving and become a freshman All American. What more do you want from the coaching staff?

Ryan should know with the relaxed transfer rules, kids are constantly being recruited & re-recruited. Washington was looking for a little reassurance and having a freshman, who became the solid #2 option, asking about his role, should have been a red light.

Coach should have said “my goal for you is to catch everything thrown in your area code and score every time we do. Otherwise you haven’t met your goal.”

Step up or step out.
