Bainbridge in the Portal
Evan Bainbridge is in the transfer portal.

I don't think this is an immediate loss. But I do feel this is a lonterm loss. As a local kid you want him to have some level of success. At the same time he has yet to show what he was recruited for ... being a tall perimeter shooting/scoring threat.

I was hoping with the free year he would stay and try to at least become a rotational piece - top 8 - but apparently he did not feel it was worth it. Sorry to see him go. Good Luck to him going forward.

I’ve heard some rumors that Sendy is in the transfer portal.

For you seinfeld fans when Kramer got burnt by coffee and he accepted the settlement offer before the coffee company completed its sentence. That would be Sendy if he was ever offered another job.

And just about every other coach around the league and around the country...

Amazing ... not long ago there was a lot of talk about EB not being a DI player. Now that he has decided to leave, seems some folks have changed their minds.

Just a FYI ... there are already more than 800 names in the transfer portal with many many more still to come as coaching jobs are filled, coaching openings suddenly available and general changes made. This is NCAA president Mark Emmerts new normal. It's going to get worse before it gets better. As an example remember Jason Carter, who began his career at Ohio University, then after a strong sophomore season transferred to Xavier? He was a solid, not great, player at Xavier. Now he's in the transfer portal again. Maybe he's headed back to OU?

Again, this is the new normal. Really has very little to do with a coach, but a lot to do with playing time, ego, and/or realization the grass isn't always greener. The people who suffer are fans who get attached, and coaches who (a) pay for a potential recruiting mistake (EB, or lack of patience to develop OR (b) pay for very good recruiting who develop a player then have him walk before reaping the benefits.

Jim McDonald, Gary Waters and the like surely look at this new world and say WTF!!!

I'll ask one more question? In this day and age, would Trevor Huffman have stayed at Kent after his sophomore or junior season? Would John Edwards have been lured away from Kent as a sophomore after his exposure in the NCAA Tournament? Even AGates, who was already well traveled, probably would have been lured away for his senior year in this new era.

Burden, a doughnut a day is the last thing I need.

Cleveland, in regards to Carter, "You Can't Go Home Again". Although, come to think of it, our Jay Peters did.

I Think it was Andy Warhol who said that "in the future, everyone will be in the portal".

But seriously, folks, as I noted before we are moving inexorably to the day when virtually all players will explore their options every year with no penalties. I'm all for players having that freedom, but from the standpoint of being a fan it sucks. I'm already becoming used to not becoming attached with any coach or players other than for the current season.

So, that's five players who "portaled" right? Bennet and Smith during the season, then Nuga, Jordan and Bainbridge. Maybe Pippen, too, unless he goes overseas. I wonder what the per team average is?

Look at Toledo ... Look at Akron ... Look at Western ... Look at Ball State ... look at Buffalo ... and that's just in the MAC. Three to five transfers is not out of the question or abnormal.

Even multiple Duke, Carolina, Kentucky players are in the portal. Add them up for yourself.

I get the enthusiasm to keep a local kid, but what I’ve seen of him doesn’t make me think he can start at this level. Loved his effort, but he sits outside and throws up bombs that look ugly, and his action seemed to come when the roster was depleted and they had little choice. Good luck to him on his next stop.

Also, for all the talk of him playing good defense at the end of the year, part of defense is ending the other teams possession with a rebound. This is particularly important for a 6'9" post player. 6.2 rebounds per 40 minutes is not going to cut it as a big.

Quite a few of the rebounds I did see him end up with were long awkward caroms to the outside, despite his floating outside and not being in typical position.

I saw the Water's CSU team play Akron at the Coaches vs Cancer game in Kent the season after he lost 3 starters all top scorers from the prior year. They were really bad without these three and GW retired or was fired soon after.

Fallsdog, Walsh is D II and has a pretty decent program He would fit in there well. He is too good for Hiram and Oberlin. Bainbridge is suited for "low major' or D II. At the Kent State level, barring injuries to others, he's limited to a few minutes.

Just to be clear. I don’t complain about the transfer portal because it’s only a Kent problem. I also didn’t say Sendy was in it because I want him fired. I just think this whole thing is ridiculous. What organization can function properly this way? This whole thing started based on if coaches can do it without penalty players should be able to also. That logic is flawed in my mind. An adult with a family gives up a lot when he moves. Children get yanked out of school, wives or husbands get upset, etc. etc. It’s not as seamless as it’s presented. Okay I’ll agree waiting for a year might be too severe but there needs to be something. Even a direct labor worker has to give up benefits for 30 days and accept probationary status for a certain time period when he makes a move. The NCAA needs to figure this out.

I am well aware of each school’s athletic programs and standing. My only concern is Kent State.

Two bigs from the same class, neither of which had any business getting basketball scholarships to Kent State now need to be replaced. But I know, I know, that’s how it is for everyone.

All of this is true ...BUT ... and this is a very big BUT... finding decent bigs (6-8 plus) AT THE MID-MAJOR LEVEL IS AN ABSOLUTE CRAPSHOOT. The majority of bigs (6-8-plus) on the transfer portal have EITHER barely played at all, or, have played enough to almost immediately be lured by a high-major program.

Look at Jason Carter who originally started at Ohio, had good numbers through his sophomore year, left for Xavier where he was a rotational piece, and is now back in the transfer portal, quite likely for a return to the mid-major level.

And that's a good case scenario ... most bigs that transfer up don't even have that kind of success. For all the talk about guards, and perimeter shooters being keys to success (and they are), in the end it's having even a decent big inside that separates the better teams from just the good teams.

Consider how good Ohio looked in the MAC Tournament, and the first round of the NCAA Tournament, vs. their second game in the tournament. It wasn't guards that beat the Bobcats, it was bigs. And by P5 stardards Creighton's bigs were very pedestrian at best.

All this is to say good bigs are hard to find, and very hard to keep. Name a decent big (6-8 or better) in the MAC? (And Mballla is 6-7). There are none. Dwight Wilson is a vg MAC post player. But even as his numbers against Creighton said he put up a good fight, to the naked eye he was no match for the Bluejays bigs who all played above the rim.

This is why I think it's flawed for EB to abandon ship, particularly when he has a 'free' year to see if he can turn things around. No, he's not the player we all hoped he would be. But he can run, he can jump, he's long and SHOULD be able to score in some form or fashion if he finds his niche.

Doesn't look like that will happen at Kent.

RE: Bainbridge in the Portal
Most years our rotation is 8-9 players with one guy sitting out as a transfer. So basically every year we have at least 3 players who are just practice bodies. Might as well make them HS kids that are really tall. Sometimes you strike gold there. Just look at Freeman at Akron.

One comment on the potential of players not having to sit out when they transfer. Everyone seems to be viewing it as what players will leave us because of it but I haven't seen any mention of what players we won't get because of it. Sendy has done a great job of taking advantage of that year they have to sit out to net us some real good players. It's like a small market team overpaying a free agent. If someone has one year of eligibility left and will have to sit out a year, they will end up at a slightly lower level than their talent dictates because we're willing to essentially pay them for two years (scholarship) but only get one playing season. Meaning if transfers are immediately eligible you can say goodbye to the Pollards, Simons, Nugas, and Hamiltons coming to Kent. I'm sure Sendy will adapt and find a new path to talent, but that tried and true method will be much less lucrative.
